Replay Video Skip Ad Three Ottawa-area musicians are among the first to receive a career boost from Birdsong Foundation, a charity that helps give voice to artists who struggle with mental illness or substance abuse. “It’s like seeing your own child in the eyes of others,” said Margaret Konopacki, a entertainment and music publicist who started Birdsong two years ago after the death of her son, David Martin. Martin was a talented musician who struggled with paranoia, psychosis and drug use. He spent months at The Royal and other treatment centres during his life, and, when he died in Ottawa in 2017, at age 30, his death was recorded as “due to mental illness.”
