Niger vows to secure schools as abducted students reunite with families

Hajiya Hanatu Jibrin Salihu on behalf of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello disclosed this while handing over the released abductees from the Government Science College Kagara to their relatives in Minna. The Commissioner said that plans were already on to make sure that schools are safe in the state especially the boarding schools.

BREAKING: Abducted Kagara students regain freedom

Punch Newspapers Sections Adebayo Ayinde, Minna The kidnapped students and staff of Government Science College Kagara have finally regained freedom from the armed bandits in Niger State. A top security source involved in the counter-kidnapping operation in the State told The PUNCH. The PUNCH had reported the abduction of the boarding students by the bandits who were dressed in military uniforms on February 17, 2021. A total of 27 students, three staff members, and 12 members of their family were abducted after the attack on the Kagara school in the early hours of Wednesday. Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, had ordered the immediate closure of all boarding schools in the bandit-ravaged areas.

Punch Newspapers Sections John Alechenu, Samson Folarin, Adebayo Ayinde and Armstrong Bakam Abductors of the 27 students and 15 workers of Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State,  have threatened to starve them to death if the ransom they are demanding is not paid on time. One of the abductors stated this in an audio recording made available to one of our correspondents on Wednesday by a prominent Islamic cleric,  Sheik Ahmad Gumi. In the audio recording, the abductor, who spoke in Hausa, was heard conversing with a negotiator, identified by Gumi as a top official of the school. He rejected N2.7m offered him as ransom for the 27 abductees.
