APGA s Sale wins Reps bye-election in Niger – Punch Newspapers

Adebayo Ayinde, Minna The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Shehu Sale, candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, winner of Magama/Rijau Federal Constituency of Niger in Saturday’s bye-election. The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Tanko Baba of the Usman Danfodio University Sokoto, said Sale scored 22,965 votes to defeat Alamu Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party who came second with 22,507 votes. Baba said Yusuf Nasir, the candidate of the ADC, polled 336 votes. He explained that the total number of registered voters was 159,347, while the number of accredited voters was 46,734, with 45,808 valid votes, total votes cast 46,499 and rejected votes 691. Meanwhile, Prof. Samuel Egwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Niger on Sunday, commended the electorate in the constituency for their peaceful conduct during and after the election.

Gunmen kill 26, abduct 40 in Niger, Sokoto communities

The attack occurred on Tuesday when about 300 gunmen on motorcycles stormed four villages of Kurege,  Sabon gida,  Sararai and Rafin Kanya,  killing some people and abducted many others. An eyewitness, who is also an indigene of the Shiroro Local Government Area, Galadima Salisu, said  on the telephone that unless governments at all levels come to their aid, the area could be taken over by bandits. All efforts to contact the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Wasiu Abiodun, failed.

Punch Newspapers Sections Adebayo Ayinde, Minna Umar, one of the sons of late Abdulkadir Kure, a former Governor of Niger State, has taken his mother, Senator Zenab Kure, to the Sharia Court of Appeal, Niger State, challenging the distribution of his father’s estate by an Upper Sharia Court/Administrator.  In a motion on notice filed as No SCA/NS/CV/O4/2020 against the decision of the court/administrator in Suit No USC/MK/CV/139, the widow and three other children of the deceased and the estate of late Abdulkadir were listed as respondents. The applicant is seeking an order of the Sharia Court of Appeal for extension of time to seek leave to appeal, another order for leave of the court to appeal and an order for extension of time within which to file the notice of appeal.

The attacks happened early Tuesday morning when about three hundred gunmen on motorcycles stormed Kurege, Sabon Gida, Sararai and Rafin Kanya shooting sporadically. An eye witness who is also an indigene of Shiroro Local Government, Galadima Salisu while confirming the incident told newsmen in a telephone interview that unless governments at all levels come to their aid, he is afraid that the area could be taken over by bandits who operate at will. All efforts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State Command, ASP Wasiu Abiodun, for comment on the attack failed.

Kidnappers kept us in cave, gave N10,000 for slippers – Niger victim

Punch Newspapers Sections Adebayo Ayinde, Minna VICTIMS of last Thursday kidnapping in Avuya ward of Gupa – Abugi community in the Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State on Sunday regained their freedom after paying N1.7 ransom. It was learnt that the five victims were accompanied by the kidnappers to the back of their village and were set free at about 1am. A source disclosed that the victims were taken across River Gurara into Kogi State before they negotiated with victims’ families. From the ransom collected, the victims’ captors gave them N10,000 to enable them to buy slippers for themselves before they were released to join their families.
