tomorrow, now it s time for the last word with lawrence o donnell. good evening, lawrence. tonight, where i was planning to not be on tv. i was doing an event that the boston public library, my favorite library and then that verdict came along and we made some emergency arrangements here in boston to get into this coverage tonight. we have lisa birnbach joining us, alex, as the first guest tonight. she, as you know, is e. jean carroll s best friend and the most supportive witness that e. jean carroll had in the trial. she s the very first person who heard e. jean carroll s story. that very day. minutes after it happened. when she had that encounter with donald trump at bergdorf goodman. and lisa birnbach s testimony about this, i think, should so much light into the way victims of sexual assault often have a hard time grappling with what they just went through. and lisa birnbach did, i think
donald trump had that remarkable moment in defending what he said in the access hollywood trial, where he says, yes, men of always had the right to do this, famous metabolic had the right to do this to women, and apparently, his reading of history goes back 1 million years, i believe he said. and he described that right that men like him have something to abuse, women it was either fortunately or unfortunately for women. he wasn t sure whether that was fortunate for women or unfortunately for women. unfortunate for when. well, it s like the way he plays both sides, good people on both sides, or fine people on both sides. i mean, the idea that he didn t disabuse e. jean carroll s lawyer, rob kaplan, of that. yeah, unfortunately. or fortunately. the way it was his m. o..
oh, it looks familiar. i mean, he said, that s my wife, marla. but he s standing with his ivana as you said. and also, that one photograph of the two couples together has been shown and shown and shown. for the last year, at least, if not more. how could he be so dumb, and then of course, he said it was blurry. but obviously, what a slip. and the point is, e. jean carroll was donald trump s type then, she would be his type now, i suppose, although he s not her type. there was crazy, it was a confession in a way. it was, absolutely. and there s also the trump confession, via the access hollywood video, that was brought into the trial.
donald trump. the jury did believe e. jean carroll. and the jury did believe the first person she told about what happened to her, her dear friend, lisa birnbach. joining us now for an exclusive interview tonight, is lisa birnbach. she is e. jean carroll s friend, and as i said, testified in this trial. lisa, thank you very much for joining us tonight. i can only wonder what this has all been like for you, i m going to begin with the moment we all went through today. and we all had some reaction to today. when we heard this verdict. where were you, and how did you hear this verdict? i was doing errands today, having thought we would not have a verdict today. lawrence, and thank you for having me. when i got a text from a lawyer saying, verdict in 15 minutes. and i hightailed it to my
thing you should do is call your best friend as soon as you can. because it turns out courts consider that a very important kerrobert of element of these kinds of stories. and so, i m just thinking of the possible lessons that could be taken out of this. trial for others. michelle goldberg, did you have any reactions like that to this testimony? you know, i spent a couple days in the courthouse, i wasn t there for the entire thing. donald trump s lawyer tried to make the fact that e. jean carroll had called her friend instead of calling the police or calling a doctor, as somehow suspicious. i just have to think, any woman watching this, or paying attention to this, would think, of course that you call when something like this happens to you. it s instinctual, in this case, she clearly confided in the right people. michelle goldberg and faith
