this solidly, they got it. some of the other things; you re right, it was will of the wisp information and speculation, and so forth, but this one you can hang your coat on that. so regarding how they came to this conclusion, take us through just quickly here the process of determining where the flight was and that it was incapable or did not have enough fuel to make it to any land around there. well, so you ve got this acars system in the cockpit, which sends data down, it s a messaging system so you can message back and forth to your company or controllers. it also sends down data about the engines and everything else. there s a data half of that and there s a second half of that that does not send data, it just sends a beam up to a satellite to interrogate the satellite to say, has your airline contracted with this satellite to take in my information. okay, so the data sending part
made a turn and might be going back to malaysia, what s the significance of that? when you first look at that turn, you have to think, well, okay, was the turn back because they were experiencing some sort of abnormal or emergency situation that required a return back to origin? but now you couple that with the intentionally disabled of the transponders, that s not a normal act. no pilot would ever have a reason to turn off the transponder in-flight. anyone planning to disable the transponder and acars system would have to have an in-depth understanding of the ash craft. whoever altered the aircraft had to use a computer located between the pilot and co-pilot chairs in the cockpit! what are the chances that someone other than the pilot or co-pilot changed that course? reprogrammed the auto-350i lot? to reprogram the flight management system, they d have to come forward into the cockpit.
this came from. authorities said today the last transmission from the plane at 1:07 a.m. the night it disappeared showed nothing unusual and the plane was still heading for beijing. that appears to undermine the theory the plane s computer he was reprogrammed to take a different route. i m joined by jim clancy live in kuala lumpur. the latest from the capital of malaysia. as we hear that word from malaysian investigators about the last communication, no evidence of preprogramming of the flight plan and westward turn how important is that, potential development, in terms of what caused the disappearance? well, the bottom line in all of this is that the u.s., sources within the u.s., have been pointing to the pilots for a long time and there was this they never said it was downloaded by the acars system, that they had preprogrammed that turn of their flight to the west
exit malaysian air space, which is sort of the odd scenario and acars system. then the route is completely turned around dramatically. that suggests that either the pilot intentionally did it for whatever reason or that something was happening in the cockpit on the airplane with some possibly some of the passengers. we can t rule out the possibility of a passengers of a terrorist link to that. but one thing we do know for certain, the transponders turned off and acars routes changed. what caused that? we don t know at this point in time. it s either an accidental fire that may have caused that or a more deliberate intentional act. that s why we need to get to the bottom and get the black box in the indian ocean. alan, there s a good deal of speculation about what s called the pain stew ard scenario, that however this event started, that in the end, all of the people on the plane, including the pilots
quit after the pilot said all was okay. why? nothing sinister. i think they keep trying to make the pilots every action and background sinister when there is nothing here. trashing the pilots is unseemly. turning off the transponder is the first thing a hijacker would do. that s right. the transponder can be subject to a technical failure like any other part of the cockpit. the prime minister referenced deliberate action. seem to be throwing under the bus the pilots. part of the narrative that it was something nefarious. these pilots have families and they are in great agony and distress. why would a bad guy take out the acars system? let s assume there is intervention in the cockpit? it makes no sense.
