iam sure i am sure my right honourable friend would agree that homeless people should be assisted are not arrested. the review of the repeal of the vacancy act 1824 has now been concluded. does my right honourable friend agree with me that it is now time the amendments to the police crime sentencing and courts bill, which have been considered in the other place, should be adopted so we can consign the vacancy act to the history books forever, but give the police they need the powers they need to combat trespass, anti social behaviour and aggressive begging? mi; behaviour and aggressive begging? my unable friend as a passionate campaigner on this issue and he has done a lot of good things in this area my honourable friend. no one should be criticised for having nowhere to live and i think the time has come to be considered the vagrancy act but to redouble our efforts to fight homelessness, as i think we have done successfully over
1824, 1860, 1912. so it s certainly possible you could see that. but i think what we would see at the presidential level is less focus on the d or the r in front of the candidate or whatever labels are most popular and more focus on the candidates themselves and their policies and their promises and their character. and so people would be more open to voting for different candidates for president. and those presidents would be able to govern in a more broader unifying way and work with congress or the opposite party sometimes get or opposite parties get push back from congress. it would be more of the kind of check and balances system we had in an earlier era when absolutely i m with you. and look, i said a caller just today on my radio show. and lee, i want to you on there and have a longer conversation about this. say to me, look, if trump was
american revolution. liberty to have input in our government, consent of the governed, and what they are saying is, we re no longer given our consent for what the changes that are happening. getting rid of the constitution of 1824, they are abolishing statehood. so texas, which wanted to be a state, there are no mistakes anymore. officials will be appointed from mexico city. that s happening to all mexican. mexican states. steven austin went to mexico city and pleaded for independence short of war and they put him in jail. because they intercepted a letter he wrote talking about independence. they released steven austin, but he became one of number of texas patriots demanding independence. there were a series of revolts, and the ruthless santa ana repress them brutally. his goal? to destroy the uprising.
in 2020 and it doesn t necessarily translate into victory. let me put this into some context here. we ve been hearing a lot of chatter about this lately. it s that thing where you have a difference between the popular vote and the electoral college. in american history where you had somebody win the popular vote and not win the presidency, it happened in 1824, andrew jackson, john quincy adams, 1876, it happened three times in the 19th century, and then it didn t happen for more than a century. i remember growing up in the 1990s, we talked about about it as something that happened a few times in the past, but it was unlikely to ever happen again. then in 2000 you remember gore and bush, gore won the popular vote by about 600,000. bush won the electoral college. there you had it for the first time in more than a century, and then guess what in 2016 it happened again, and again, it was the democrat, hillary clinton who won the popular vote. donald trump the republican becomes the preside
president because of the electoral college system. you have to win the 270 electoral college votes. so it s very, very difficult to run for president as an outsider. it s pretty much set up as a two-party system. the last time a third party won was 1824, way back with john quincy adams. and then it goes to the house of representatives. even if you do win as an independent, even some states, as andrew jackson did in 1824, then it goes to the house of representatives. and the house of representatives in 1824 gave it to john quincy adams, even though andrew jackson had gotten more votes and more electoral college votes. yeah, but do you think clearly people don t think that we are best served by the two parties. and the parties know that. they entrench, they make it really hard for a independent or a third party person to get on to the debate stage, you know, without a lot of money, it s nearly impossible. you know, what is the alternative for someone who doesn t want to vote for a
