douglas brinkley and a historian and professor from princeton university. thanks so much for being here. professor, i ll start with you. in our 240 year history, have we had rigged presidential elections and how hard would it be to rig a national presidential elections? we ve had corruption in the 19th century there was a lot of corruption in different states and different cities. there s been controversies when elections were contested and decided in congress, which is in 1824. but it s virtually impossible in 2016 to rig an entire election. it s decentralized. it s praguemented. and there s very little evidence that this could happen. douglas what about the history of presidential candidates claiming that an election was stolen from them or rigged? have you seen that? well, you know, it s kind of the whole election rigged is very extreme. that s saying democracy utterly doesn t work. but it is true in 1960, that john f. kennedy was able to
comments. suggested that actually trumpism is less like reaganism and more like a guy that you studied a very long time. andrew jackson. a complete and total disruption to the political class. it s true. i mean, trump has more in common with jackson than not. although i don t think he s challenged anybody to a duel yet, but it s only 7:30. exactly. so, you know, watch out chris matthews. there is a sense that he s going to come in, sweep out the old order. jackson felt there was an anger about the jack sewnian movement in part because there was a feeling that elites had rigged the system against the people. beginning with the 1824 election, which had gone to the house of representatives and that elected john quincy adams.
they re both ex-tv people, but reagan grasped that you can be anti-establishment without being constantly crass and foul mouthed and narcissistic. this is a serious country and a serious time, when the world needs leadership. you should not be playing games. we are looking for more, and this is almost withdrawing from world politics and being frivolous about it. there are a lot of people who say we ve had outside the box or different kind of candidates, andrew jackson comes to mind in 1824. people who were not necessarily your cup of tea, who messed things up, were very loud, very vocal, very in your face, but very effective. you know, there s a difference between being an outsider, which you could say the system was designed to encourage. they re supposed to be regularly
