Metro to purchase property in Cornelius for proposed transfer station February 04 2021 Metro will pay $3.1 million for a 12.5-acre property in Cornelius, where it proposes building a solid waste facility. Metro took a major step Thursday, Feb. 4 toward building a new recycling and solid waste transfer station in Cornelius. The Metro Council unanimously approved a resolution allowing the regional government to purchase a 12.5-acre industrial lot at North Fourth Avenue and Holladay Street, several blocks north of the Cornelius Walmart, where the station would be constructed. In 2019, Metro created an agreement for the property, providing officials time to assess the suitability of the property for the project and engage with the community about concerns and potential benefits before purchasing it.

Owner Roy MacMillan said he was informed by the state on Dec. 17 that he would face $70,000 per day in fines if he didn’t close the ice rink immediately, according to an open letter MacMillan sent to state officials. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has required indoor entertainment centers, including ice rinks, in counties labeled as “extreme risk” for COVID-19 spread to remain closed since mid-November. Washington County has been listed in the extreme risk category since that time.
