Determined to promote change and contribute towards mitigating the effects of climate change in Fiji, Tevita Dakuiboca participated in Fiji’s first National Youth Climate Action summit in Suva last month.
The Lokia Youth Club president said he believed starting awareness at grassroots level could lead to big changes in the near future.
“I look after the youth club in my village where we try to do work which will help protect our village and our country from the impacts of climate change,” he said.
“As Lokia Village is located near the Rewa River, whenever it is high tide the village gets flooded and this affects us all.”

It was a bad start to the week for residents in the greater Suva-Nasinu area as they woke up to dry taps yesterday.
Timaima Sokia of Naveiwakau, Nasinu, said she had to fetch water from a relative’s house in Laqere for her household needs.
Water Authority of Fiji chief operating officer Seru Soderberg said the cause of water supply disruptions was a massive landslide at the inlet to the Wainibuku Reservoir last Sunday.
He said it dislocated the 600mm and 450mm pipelines “causing significant damage and will take some time to safely repair”.

A LOKIA fisherman is having sleepless nights, worried about how he will feed his family during the 14-day COVID-19 containment.
Ravinesh Chand said the restriction of movement had affected his ability to earn and feed his family.
“At the end of every day, I thank God I have managed today but what will I do tomorrow?” the 43-year-old said.
“If there is no one working, there will be a lot of tension in the house about what to eat, how to manage and where to get an income from.”
