Letter To The Editor: A Metropolitan Redevelopment Area (MRA) In White Rock Could Help Spur Local Development Los Alamos MainStreet Over the years there has been continued frustration about some of our visible and unsightly vacant buildings in Los Alamos and White Rock and declining retail options in the downtown. The community, as well as business and property owners, seem to all want the same thing: A vibrant downtown and business-friendly community. How we achieve this may be up for interpretation in our unique town, but the reality exists that we must bring stakeholders together, including business owners and property owners, in a constructive way to initiate important discussions around barriers and underlying issues preventing possible development and retail growth.

County Council Seeks Applicants For Board Of Registration COUNTY News: The Los Alamos County Council is seeking applicants to fill a two-year term on the local Board of Registration, which also serves as the Canvassing Committee after elections. There will be five members appointed to this Board with no more than two members appointed from any political party. Consideration and appointment of applicants for the Board of Registration has been placed on the Council’s 6 p.m. June 8 meeting agenda. A call for letters of interest is now open and letters are due to the County Manager no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, May 20.

County Council Ponders Pedestrian Retail Overlay Zone kirsten@ladailypost.com Los Alamos County Council voted Tuesday night to approve a motion for the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) to review a proposed ordinance that will change Chapter 16 of the County Code. The change includes a pedestrian retail overlay zone in which offices would no longer be permitted to occupy ground level spaces. According to agenda documents: “…the downtown district is limited to pedestrian-oriented ground floor mixed use retail sales, entertainment, restaurants, including food and beverage, and personal and medical services with upper floor residential and professional offices”.  The motion passed 5-2 with Councilors David Izraelevitz and Sara Scott opposing the ordinance, which was introduced by Councilor Sean Williams.
