NEW DELHI: Bird flu in poultry birds has been confirmed in a few more districts of Kerala and Maharashtra, while culling operations are continuing in epicentres, the Centre said on Tuesday. The disease has been confirmed in other birds such as crow and migratory birds in Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh as well as in Rupnagar district of Punjab. So far, bird flu cases have been reported in total 12 states across the country, out of which five Haryana, Maharashtra, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have confirmed the disease in poultry birds, it said. In India, bird flu or avian influenza is spread mainly by migratory birds coming into the country during winter months between September and March. The disease is zoonotic.

New Delhi [India], January 19 (ANI): The central government on Monday informed that avian influenza (AI) has been confirmed in five states for poultry birds and in nine states for crow, migratory and wild birds till January 18. Further, bird flu has been confirmed in samples of dead heron from Tis Hazari, New Delhi and in crow from Red Fort and an advisory in this regard has been issued to Delhi for taking necessary action. In Maharashtra, Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) have been deployed and culling of poultry birds is underway in all the affected epicentres. Culling operations have been completed in Central Poultry Development Organisation (CPDO), Mumbai and cleaning and disinfection is in process. Similarly, culling and sanitisation operations have been completed in the epicenters of Latur district in village Kendrewadi, Ahmedpur, village Sukani, and village Tondar (Vajrawadi) in Udgir taluk and village Kurdwadi in Ausa taluk.

Synopsis “There are sporadic cases in states except in Maharashtra and Haryana where cases of the disease in poultry have been reported in large number. The situation is, however under control and there is no risk in consumption of poultry and poultry products,” Union animal husbandry commissioner Praveen Malik said. The centre, however, has asked states not to impose ban on sale of poultry and poultry products and allow such selling sourced from the non-infected areas and states.
