You hear the name Walkerston and instantly think of sport, and with good reason.
But thereâs plenty more to the town, the people who call it home and community stalwarts that give it its character.
Walkerston is also a town of great heart that rallies for each other when needed, most recently when Wests was given an almighty kick to the ground.

Daily Mercury wants to uncover, celebrate and find more of when My Town heads to Walkerston on Tuesday.
My Town is an initiative with the Mackay Regional Council that puts a different regional area in the spotlight each fortnight.

Subscriber only A Mackay man whose daughter and niece drowned in the Gooseponds says he will spend the rest of his life fighting to ensure their deaths will not be in vain. Cousins Annamarie Lange, 3, and Ashley Grech, 2, drowned in the freshwater stream 30 years ago on March 14, 1990 after Annamarie s dad Andreas Lange reported them missing from the nearby family home. Months after the tragedy, wooden cleats were placed around the Gooseponds in North Mackay at the recommendation of Mackay Coroner Tom Bradshaw. The Coroner s inquest was told the girls might not have been able to get out of the water because the concrete banks were too steep and too slippery.

Subscriber only A petition to stop a Farleigh truck depot has been dismissed after it was found no development applications had been submitted for the site. About 70 residents had objected to what they suspected was a truck stop being built at 4 Christoe St citing concerns for children s safety with the location near Farleigh State School. But a Mackay Regional Council meeting on Wednesday confirmed there had been zero development applications lodged or approved at the address.

It had missing keys and was past its prime time but a thrown away piano somehow avoided becoming crushed on the rubbish heap.
It was moved inside the Incredable Tip Shop where Clancy Morgan spotted the old, worn out girl and proved it deserved a second lease on life.
“Many customers stopped to listen and really enjoyed the entertainment; some even came to compliment me on how nice it was to hear someone play the piano,” Ms Morgan said.
“This got me thinking about how lovely it would be to place a reconditioned piano somewhere in the Mackay community.”
