Police are keeping an open mind in terms of the motive behind a reckless arson attack at the home of a serving police officer in Co Antrim.
A ârecklessâ arson attack at the home of a serving Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officer in Co Antrim has been condemned.
Three cars were set alight at the property at around 1.45am on Thursday.
The fire also caused scorch damage to the house which the officer, his wife and daughter were asleep in at the time. The three were not injured but the episode was described as a âterrifying ordealâ for the family.
The PSNI said it was âkeeping an open mindâ in terms of the motivation for the incident. Det Chief Insp Dunny McCubbin said it was a âcompletely reckless attack which could have had serious consequencesâ.
An explosive device has been found under the vehicle of a member of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) at a rural property just outside Dungiven, Co Derry, security sources have said.
A âstrong line of inquiryâ is that the dissident republican group the New IRA was responsible, police said on Tuesday.
Those who planted the bomb at the rear of the female police officerâs car left the device âdirectly at the point where her three-year-old daughter sitsâ, police also said.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan told reporters at a press conference that the âviable deviceâ â which was made of explosives attached to a container of flammable liquid â was âdesigned to cause a fireball which would have engulfed the victimâs car and anyone in itâ, as well as âanyone calling to the house or anyone in the proximityâ.
