If any of us look at how much we spent on rent in the last 12 years, that would be enough for a serious deposit on a place. Thatâs one of the most sickening things. Iâve paid all this rent, and Iâll still have to pay a mortgage for 30-odd yearsâ
It wasnât supposed to be like this. The Covid-19 pandemic and the much-vaunted flood of Airbnb-style accommodation on to the rental market in cities emptied of tourists was supposed to mean more choice and better prospects for long-term renters. An official eviction ban and a rent freeze promised greater security.

The farm: “I was farming in partnership with my father Harry up until February of last year when he passed away. I am farming on my own here now. The farm is on Clonroche-type soil, it’s free draining soil, so we are lucky enough we can get out on land early. I sow 200 acres of tillage and this year I lambed down 210 ewes.”
A helping hand: ”The ewes are Suffolk-cross. They scanned in at 1.8 this year and lambed very well, I didn’t incur many losses. It was due to my sister Louise, son Ryan, niece Nikita and nephew Rhys helping me and minding all the lambs. There was no hungry lamb in the place thanks to them! Ryan’s nanny Ann even had the dinner ready for us every day, which was as important as everything else.”
The autumn series of festivals is going ahead in New Ross this year, with organisers to decide on whether or not they will all be online, all in person or, most likely, blended festivals, combining both formats.
Every year the Kennedy Summer School, New Ross Piano Festival and the Eugene O Neill International Festival of Theatre bring positive attention and a lot of footfall to the streets of New Ross.
Last year none of the festivals could take place due to Covid-19 restrictions but with all adults who want to be vaccinated due to have their jabs by August, organisers hope in person sessions can take place.
My kids were worried about me getting it : Meet the frontline mothers fighting Covid-19 It’s phenomenal what they pick up. For a little boy of four to be obsessed with handwashing it’s not normal. It feels more important than ever to celebrate our mammies, following a turbulent year where they’ve been needed like never before. And, with more than 76% of EU healthcare workers being female, it s likely that plenty of Irish mothers working on our frontlines will be celebrated this weekend.
