The Stuttgart School Board of Directors held their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, June 8. All members were present, including newly elected board member Victor Johnson.
Superintendent Dr. Rick Gales reported on ongoing construction and future projects at several Stuttgart schools. According to Gales, the largest project in the district is the repair of the roof and HVAC system at Park Avenue Elementary School, where demolition has started. The security system at PAE is also being upgraded.
Board member Todd Barnes requested that Gales give an update on projects related to athletics. Gales said that during a meeting with Athletic Director Josh Price, Assistant Athletic Director Randy Deaton, and High School Principal Jeff McKinney, some upgrades to athletic facilities were recommended. WORCESTER, Mass. Lauren Jakobs of Naples was one of 38 students selected to present an original academic research project at Assumption University’s 27th annual Undergraduate Symposium, held virtually on April 19.
Jakobs, a member of the class of 2022, presented “Exploring the Characteristics and Diseases caused by Clostridium Botulinum.” She was part of a group of three students who explored the characteristics and diseases caused by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterial species known to cause botulism. Though botulism affects a small number of people in the U.S. annually, understanding the pathobiology of C. botulinum will better help researchers determine how it can be prevented and treated.

The lopsided vote against a union at Amazon’s warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, was a major disappointment to organized labor, which regards the fight with Amazon as central to labor’s survival. Yet the defeat doesn’t mark the end of the campaign against Amazon so much as a shift in strategy.
In interviews, labor leaders said they would step up their informal efforts to highlight and resist the company’s business and labor practices rather than seek elections at individual job sites, as in Bessemer. The approach includes everything from walkouts and protests to public relations campaigns that draw attention to Amazon’s leverage over its customers and competitors.
