WHEELING The Triadelphia Middle School annex will remain standing and won’t be demolished once an addition is constructed to the main school building this summer, Ohio County Board of Education members learned Monday night. Their next decision will be whether to spend $182,000 on a flood mitigation project at nearby Steenrod Elementary School, or see if a more cost-effective plan would alleviate flooding issues experienced at the school in recent years.

WHEELING Ohio County officials are making plans to scale back COVID vaccination opportunities for adults, and to focus instead on inoculating school-age youths. The move comes as federal officials indicate they could move as soon as next week to authorize Pfizer-brand COVID vaccinations as safe for children as young as 12. Presently the vaccine is available only to those age 16 or older.

Staff Writer Middle school band directors in Ohio County Schools don’t want students to miss a beat due to an instruction year when COVID played the dominant tune. The band directors are striking up a middle school band program this summer for rising seventh and eighth grade band members. The program is set to take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 26-30 at the J.B. Chambers Performing Arts Center at Wheeling Park High School. “There are more instruments and things going on within a band than there are in other music groups,” explained WPHS Band Director David Alfred. “This is an attempt to get the band members playing, get them some focus and maybe make up for what we missed due to COVID absences.”

WHEELING At least 10 percent of Ohio County School students indicate they still will stay home and continue remote learning while their classmates resume a five-day school week, according to a recent survey of their families. There is also about 7 percent of the student population who has not returned their surveys, according to school officials. The Ohio County Board of Education this week was presented with data showing the results of a recent survey of current remote learners, and whether they planned to return to in-person learning once five-day school weeks begin Monday.

WHEELING The Ohio County Board of Education Monday night approved a contract to keep county-provided prevention resource officers in school buildings through the end of this school year. The agreement achieved is expected to result in reducing the overall number of county-provided PROs from six to five, while eventually eliminating the PRO from Middle Creek Elementary School, Board of Education President David Croft explained. The school district also has plans to reduce the overall number of deputies serving as PROs in the coming years, while hiring more from the city of Wheeling at a cheaper cost, he said.
