The Ohio County Commission approved a $1 million tax abatement for the city of Wheeling for the former Ohio Valley Medical Center campus.
WHEELING The city of Wheeling now doesn’t have to pay Ohio County more than $1 million in taxes owed on the former Ohio Valley Medical Center property, and the Ohio County Board of Education is on board with that.
The Ohio County Commission has approved a tax abatement of more than $1 million for the city of Wheeling, which assumed ownership of the former OVMC site in the summer of 2020.
As part of last year’s deal to acquire the former OVMC from previous owner Medical Properties Trust or MPT, the city agreed to pay legal and brokerage fees associated with the transaction, as well as any outstanding property taxes owed.

Ohio County Chief Deputy John Schultz, left, and Sheriff Tom Howard attend a recent Ohio County commission meeting.
WHEELING The Ohio County-provided prevention resource officer at Middle Creek Elementary was eliminated in the PRO contract recently approved between the county and Ohio County Schools, but there already has been a demonstrated need for an officer there, according to Sheriff Tom Howard.
The day after the PRO was eliminated from the school, Howard said he received a call from school district administration asking that a deputy be provided at the school to handle traffic issues.

WHEELING Ohio County commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved a prevention resource officer contract between the county and Ohio County Schools but with an added twist they see as beneficial to the school district.
Commission President Randy Wharton asked that commissioners include an amendment to the agreement that would give school district officials the right to interview new county-provided PROs before they are assigned to a school.
Commissioner Zach Abraham said he had requested such authority for the school district when he served as board of education president.
“I think that’s something they should have, unless someone thinks they would object to it,” Commissioner Don Nickerson said.
