An active shooter threatens the lives of multiple civilians and it’s their job to strategically apprehend the shooter and protect the citizens. It takes teamwork from every department, from dispatch to EMS, from law enforcement to fire rescue.  Because of the intensity of these situations, first responders from all around Lake County came together to this week to train for active shooter incidents to ensure if a situation arises, they re ready.  “It’s a great opportunity for everyone to train together,” Tommy Carpenter, Director of Lake County Office of Emergency Management, said. “We go through the instructional part and run scenarios where we take the material we just learned and practice it. Boy Scout working to honor Lake County s only astronaut

But it s more than just a street with a name.  Many don t know that the road, which intersects with US Highway 441 near the Eustis/Tavares line, was named after Lake County’s first and only astronaut. Working toward his Eagle Scout rank, 17-year-old James Feuerstein of Mount Dora has made it his mission to create awareness and build a memorial in honor of Walker.  “I’m going to be building a memorial for David Walker, who is an astronaut from Lake County, the only one so far,” Feuerstein said. “He’s also an Eagle Scout and I’ve always been interested in the space industry and just wanted to honor a Lake County hero. I’m finding that a lot of people don’t know who he is.”

Car shows, cruises, picking peaches, baking class on tap in Lake County

Leesburg Classic Car Show Downtown Leesburg will be hosting their monthly classic car show on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. on Main Street. The theme is “Gangsters of the 30s and 40s.” Classic cars will line the streets and there will be live music and vendors. The downtown shops and restaurants will also be open.  The event is free.  Parents Night Out The Leesburg Parks and Recreation Department is hosting their monthly Parents Night Out on Friday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. This month will feature volleyball at the gym located at 1851 Griffin Road.  Children ages six to 12 can be dropped off for a fun filled evening with crafts, games, a movie and pizza party.

Let the games begin: Combat Cafe kicks off sign war in Lake County Cindy Peterson And Umatilla restaurant Combat Cafe has declared war here in Lake County.  “It’s just a fun idea to get the community involved,” owner Beth Chambers said. “I saw it was posted on Facebook asking if someone would start it in Lake County and I responded with ‘challenge accepted.’”  That post was made by Robin Richter, who had no idea how popular these sign wars posts would become. The local war currently has its own hashtag, #LakeCountySignWar, and a Facebook page, Lake County SIGN WAR 21, where community members can follow along.
