Addressing educational inequity on Staten Island: ‘Who’s to blame?’

In an effort to seek the root causes of the educational struggles seen predominantly on the North Shore, an ad-hoc committee of the Staten Island branch of the NAACP gathered a panel of educators, administrators and community leaders to participate in a recent virtual forum. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The Staten Island chapter of the NAACP recently hosted a virtual forum on educational inequities in the borough and the various challenges including low proficiency rates in reading and math and chronic absenteeism facing many schools on the North Shore.
When city preschools, elementary schools, and District 75 schools for students with complex special needs reopened for in-person classes in early December, city officials promised more stability. But the reality has been far more complicated, parents, staff and administrators claim is undercut by frequent school closures, ongoing staffing challenges and lingering gaps in city childcare networks.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The mayor’s travel ban was lifted on Tuesday morning, but he asked residents to continue to stay off of the roads unless absolutely necessary.
The mayor signed an executive order Sunday night declaring a State of Emergency beginning 6 a.m. on Monday through 6 a.m. Tuesday. During this time, all non-essential travel was suspended.
“New Yorkers did a great job staying off the roads,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday morning, also thanking the men and women in the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) who worked hard to clear the roads.
