Freeport police investigating Election Day polling location complaints

FREEPORT A Freeport man has been cited for allegedly intimidating voters. Dell Wasso, 53, of Freeport, is accused of pressing a vote Democratic sign against the window of a vehicle as it was being parked outside of a polling location and attempting to intimidate the occupants as they were exiting the vehicle, Freeport Police Chief Matt Summers said Thursday. Summers called the offense a city ordinance violation and said Wasso was issued a notice to appear.  Police are also investigating complaints that political campaigning took place too close to several polling locations Tuesday in violation of state election laws. The majority of the complaints involved individuals handing out election-related materials and displaying signs in close proximity to voting sites.

Freeport Mayor Jodi Miller faces challenge from Ronnie Bush

Journal Standard FREEPORT Incumbent Mayor Jodi Miller is being challenged by veteran politician Ronnie Bush in the April 6 election for mayor. Miller, a former city alderwoman, is finishing her first term as mayor. She is touting her administration s ability to fund infrastructure improvements without raising taxes, address pension liability costs and the removal of dozens of blighted structures.  Before occupying the mayors office, she had already made a name for herself in the community as a successful businesswoman and 17-year owner the popular Union Dairy ice cream parlor. Bush, also a former city alderman, is a Stephenson County Board member. He has a long history of community activism that includes creation of a neighborhood watch group, funding a police-officer-occupied home in the city s 3rd Ward, and promoting a back-to-school celebration, which entails equipping the city s children with necessary supplies for the first day of school.

Jodi Miller: Your vote Tuesday is your chance to impact local decisions

Jodi Miller Special to The Journal-Standard The right and privilege to vote is one of our most cherished responsibilities as American citizens. Our ancestors over the generations have bled and died to first establish, then protect, and ultimately expand that fundamental right.   There is a deep connection between Americans when we come together to cast our vote, and it is a connection that binds us beyond all differences in political ideology, background and belief. In America, when you enter the voting booth, it does not matter how much money or education you have, what job you have, or who you are. The retired veteran who has voted in countless elections and the idealistic youth voting for the first time share this common connection. They are both Americans and they both have one vote, one voice to raise.
