NOIDA: A city-based engineer lost $12,460, or a little over Rs 9 lakh, to cyber criminals who claimed they could get him a job and permanent residency in Canada.
Rohit Sood, the victim, said that he had applied for a job in Canada and other countries through websites during the lockdown. In September last year, a ‘Canada-based’ company, Skanska Engineering, rang him up with a job offer. It had been organised, the firm told him, by a placement company called Placement Seekers.
“I had applied on many websites so they may have picked up my CV from there. A person who identified herself as Trisha Watson called me up in September 2020 and said she was a representative of the firm. They told me my CV had been shortlisted. After one round of a telephonic interview and another on Zoom, they offered me employment in Canada,” Sood told TOI.
