single-family home. it started in the 7,000 block of parcheers place. the firefighters arrived at a home near the university of maryland to find it fully engulfed in flames. using the water from the engine crews were able to take on the fire briefly but were forced to withdrawal and wait for adequate supplies. the work we're told it was put out within an hour. the family living here is doing fine at this hour. a man woke to the sound of the smoke alarm. alerted his wife and three children and rushed outside. his family is staying with a neighbor and the fire loss is $700,000. a man and a woman are on the run after an attack on a pregnant woman in suitland, maryland. it happened yesterday inside of an apartment on silver park drive. investigators say the pregnant woman was hanging out with the suspect when something went terribly wrong. the woman in her third trimester was cut and critically wounded. investigators believe it was a targeted attack. police are searching for man who set another man on fire. it happened in maryland. joshua mashburn is wanted for arson an attempted burglary. he was last seen driving a burgundy plymouth voyager. the victim is in critical condition at med star. no word what caused a fire that injured a firefighter. it happened sunday morning in the 1300 block of oak street. the fire caused a wall to collapse and damage nearby homes. several streets were closed and road crews were called in because of the icy conditions. they believe the unoccupied home was under renovation or construction. the district is pouring $1.5 million in the juvenile detention center new beginnings in laurel. some are raising questions where the money is going. the washington examiner reports that mayor ordered new bars on window and other security measures. they did not say how much the work would cost or who would pay for it. one maryland lawmaker says it is going to be a free for all. he is referring to the expected vote on a casino next to the anne arundel mills shopping mall. it would house 4700 slots and be the largest in the state. some are pushing to delay the vote. jessica doyle is off but it's time for the first "living $mart" report of the morning. the treasury department has good news for taxpayers. the government's bailout program will cost $200 billion less than previously believed. a department official spoke on condition of expected to debate and vote on a health reform bill amendment that puts limits for the federal funding of abortion the amendment would bar people who get federal subsidies from using the money to buy plans that offer abortion coverage. tara mergener has more. >> reporter: the fight over abortion could make or break the health care reform bill. >> we are down to two major issues abortion and public option. >> reporter: it is expected to ignite a heated debate. as the bill stands now, insurance plans could only cover abortions if they are paid for fully by the beneficiaries. belle ben nelson is pushing for tougher language, restricting the use of federal funds for abortion and wants taxpayer money only in cases of rape, incest or the life of a mother is in danger. if the amendment doesn't pass he threatened to vote no on the bill. >> we are not there. we are worken on a consensus. >> reporter: a vote on the amendment could come as early as tomorrow. even before today's debate, democrats were busy working behind the scenes to find a compromise on the issue. president obama tried to rally both himself with a rare visit to captiol hill over the weekend. he urged senate democrats to work out their differences but the closed door meeting had republicans feeling shut out. >> i would love for the president to come and meet with 40 of us on this side of the aisle. >> reporter: democrats insist will save money and save lives. >> if we miss this opportunity to pass this bill, it's lost. >> reporter: senators could vote on the bill as early as next weekend, but even then it will need to be reconciled with the house's version before heading to the president's desk. tara mergener , cbs news, washington. the climate change summit in copenhagen denmark has begun. 192 nations are scheduled to participate in the summit. the u.n. want rich nations to agree to steep cuts in green house missions by 2020 and pledge $10 billion a year to help poorer countries with the issue. the meeting will conclude with a summit of world leaders including president obama. the toyota motor company took a big step in west virginia after signing an agreement with the environmental protection agency. the deal was sealed at the manufacturing plant near charleston, west virginia. dow chemical was also part of the plan. the program gives the epa the okay to help them organize ways time for another "living $mart" report. newly-released numbers suggest more people are applying for public aid in fairfax county temperature food stamp applications doubled from september of 2007 to september of 2009. they were each 33% higher. applications for temporary assistance for needy families saw a 44% increase. nonprofit leaders say the numbers are attributed to the recession. a california company is recalling 22,000-pounds of ground beef which maybe contaminated with salmonella. the u.s. agriculture department says the beef sold has been attributed to two illnesses in arizona. the beef went through a retail distribution center in arizona where it was repackaged in to super size packages and sold under different retail brand names. consumers are advised to check with their retailer to see if they have purchased products affected by the recall. the government of ecuador is fighting one of the most powerful companies. they are battling chevron who should pay for pollution. ecuador filed papers trying to prevent them from shifting the case to arbitration. people in the rain forest blame chevron and are suing the company for $27 billion. a moment of somehow got her hands on a gun and accidentally shot herself. the 3-year-old was visiting relatives in florida many when the accident happened. a 51-year-old driver veers off a road and hits a truck. that sent the semi crashing in to a guardrail on to the road below. it trapped the driver and a passenger inside. neither survived. the driver of the car was treated for a minor injury. today is the 2010. the social media guide have teamed up and they say next year's twitter will be a site called foursquare. you can zoom in and see the highlights here. it is a location based mobile start up with one simple purpose. it lets users share their location with a group of friends. it is similar to twitter. the two share the same investors but foursquare goes beyond twitter in it is a virtual game that participate doctor participants earn badges for checking in at certain places. what do you say we look at it. here is the home page. twitter asks the question what is happening. twitter instead asks you to check in. what they mean is they check in and tells your friends where they can find you and recommends places to go and things to do nearby. here's an example. right here you can see that vinoaajv just sent a post to somebody called ice cold beer. he is visiting singaporean he advised them to order the chicken wings and asked for the accompanying garlic sauce and he is giving tips. it is location based. four square says in addition it is a great way to meet up with friend and tell which friends are next to you and learn about their favorite spots and a great way to discover new places. but i have to say one of the big questions about this is security. if people can find out exactly where you are that clearly raises some concerns. we will have to wait and see how it plays [ announcer ] beneful prepared meals. another healthful, flavorful beneful. oh my goff. a true life story of a baltimore raven football player claimed the top spot at the box office. the blind side starring sandra bullock brought in $20 million. the twilight saga new moon brought in $50.7 million. dramatic story brothers, disney's a christmas carol an old dogs round out the top five. a stellar lineup was honored this weekend on the potomac. five artists received the kennedy center honor. bruce springsteen, robert de niro, mel brooks, opera stars and dave brubeck received medals at the white house and then were honored with performances at the kennedy center. the snow didn't stop nearly 2,000 people from waiting in the cold for a chance to meet sarah palin. >> sarah palin signed copies of her book going rogue in fairfax. fans came from north carolina to pennsylvania. and some even played the part. we snapped a palin imposer with andrew from fairfax. nascars top drivers were on the las vegas strip. they were celebrating the nascar champions week. and eva longoria at the vegas opening of the restaurant fako. we have heard of project runway but washington has turned its stilettos to project funway. they report three of the areas young and talented budding denies put on a show competing for a scholarship to fashion school. a freshman won the prize. well, what have your cameras caught lately? want me to share it on the air? visit my 9 news interactive blog at oh my goff.tv to fine out how to enlist in my army of community reporter and watch my morning report. visit oh my goff.tv and find me on facebook, facebook.com/tvangie. the salvation army bell ringers are a signature of the holiday season. collecting donation for the needy time of the year. but have you ever stopped to think of the people who ring those bells and wonder what motivates them to help others. one holiday bell ringer tells her own story. >> hello there, guys. merry christmas. you are in the spirit today. my name is diane eubanks. i'm here working for the salvation army. we are taking in donations for the needy and homeless. thank you very much. >> i'm homeless and i don't have a job and i lost my job and my husband's work slowed up and started to draw unemployment and we have been living in a van off and on for seven months. in work. trying to find a job. >> i will take you. right here. >> last year at this time i became homeless. salvation army charges you $9 a night. i got hired as a bell ringer so i will do that tomorrow. >> diane is an example of somebody's who's had a difficulty and is without a home. we are trying to provide a place for her to stay and when she learned of an opportunity to ring the bell and make some income we were able to help her with that. >> good morning. how are you doing? >> good. trying to stay a little warm. >> bell ringers will gather in the morning. >> that will be your kettle for distribution. >> okay. >> they get assigned to whatever kettle location they will be. >> feels good to help out and feels good to make a little money in the process. >> is this okay? >> great. >> do you keep the buckets with you or do they go -- >> yeah. >> good to be on the bus and be warm. >> they get in vehicles and are transported to those locations. they will be out there and ring bells throughout the day. >> good morning. happy holidays. >> thank you. merry christmas. >> i believe they are still taking volunteers who want to ring the bells. you have to go to the salvation army's website an you can sign up. find an area near you will where there's plenty. >> have you ever done that? >> no. but i have thought about it and i love the fact they have credit card machines on it. >> i did it a few years ago when i was in rochester, new york and it was fun. >> i bet you met a lot of people. >> let's talk weather because we have had an interesting snowstorm. south and east sorry you missed out but saturday could be a little hope for you. we have plenty of clouds. li
