sheriff's office is mourning one of its deputies who died in a boating accident over the weekend. deputy sheriff dean ridings was on patrol when the boat was apparently hit but a large wake or a series of them causing it to tip sideways. another deputy suffered only minor injuries. investigators are searching for whoever gunned down three people saturday night in prince george's county killing one of them. it happened in the 11000 block of lotsford terrace if much elavil. 21-year-old aaron leach died. another two victims are expected to recover. an extremely violent weekend in baltimore. ten people shot there and two of those victims died. it all happened between early saturday morning and sunday morning. police have no suspects in any of the shootings and can't say whether any of those are connected. now to an explosion that ripped through a mine in china today killing at least 46 people. 72 workers were initialingly trapped but 26 of them were able to escape. it is believed the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. the cause of the blast is still under investigation. just last year, more than 26 had you been miners were killed in china. now to the latest efforts to stop that oil leak in the gulf of mexico which bp now says has cost the company $2 billion. crews are drilling two relief wells trying to hut a target roughly the size of a salad plate about thee miles we low the surface. workers say if they miss or move too slowly, oil will keep pouring into the sea. many streets in d.c. were shut down sunday morning but the city was far from have some relief. >> oh, yeah, we feed the rain too. >> "t. a developing story from the gulf of mexico where millions of gallons of oil continue to pour in the gulf each day. bp just announced it has shelled out $2 billion for the disaster. crews have launched a complicated new plan to try to stop the leak. >> crews drilling two relief wells are trying desperate prattly to hit a target roughly the size of a salad plate about three miles below the surface. if they miss their target, that oil will continue to pour into the sea. bp is hoping to capture between 60 and 08,000-barrels a day by mid-july. experts in the "industry are criticizing the lack of ingenuity displayed by bp gentleman it has been just awful. to use booms and mops and dispersants and burning and so forth, skimming with shrimp boats. where is the imagination and the scale? >> reporter: bp says it has spent $2 billion responding to that oil spill and has paid out $105 million in claims. new worst case scenario estimates show as much as 100,000-barrels of oil per day may be gushing into the gulf. an internal memo suggests bp officials knew the amount of oil leaking into the gulf was likely much more than they were publicly estimating because of the damage to the well. sarah? >> thank you. we are following a developing story now. another mining accident in china. an explosion ripped through awe mine in lake anna as officials investigate how deputy dean ridings died on routine boat patrol. preliminary findings are in from the virginia department of game and inland fisheries. >> the accident appears to have been caused when the boat was struck by a large wake or series of wakes which caused the boat to go sideways and caused deputy ridings to strike his head. >> reporter: deputy william schroeder who was ejected from the boat walk wade with minor injuries. deputy ridings' patrol car is draped in black in front of the sheriff's office and covered with flowers. >> >> reporter: back at lake anna state park, dive teams look for the various clues. police boats steered recreational traffic away from the area. it happened somewhere out here. we are told it was within sight of the shore. you can see how even small wakes are affecting boats that are tied up right here at the dock. some folk out on the water had theories about what might have happened. >> it must have been in the middle of two boats because you get the waves that come like this and they kind of crest up and that can create kind of a little bit of a swell. >> reporter: recreational boaters say they noticed fewer vehicles on the water and nobody being reckless. >> i hope the community helps out their families and prays for them. >> you don't make sense of it. you just try to do everything can you to make it right and do the job just like he would have done it and he would have done it for us. >> reporter: careen gray houston, fox 5 news. investigators are hoping the public knows something about a deadly shooting in prince george's county over the weekend. three people were hit saturday night in what may have been a drive-by shooting in mitchellville. 21-year-old aaron leach died. the other two victims are expected to recover though. if you know anything, please call the number there on the bottom of your screen. a business owner gunned down in broad daylight has been laid to rest. he was killed during a robbery attempt last thursday at his check cashing store. his father was also attacked but is recovering. it is not clear if the familiar raes inside the store were working. he was 0 years old, a new husband and a father. it was a sad father's day for virginia's governor and first lady. mrs.maureen mcdonnell's father passed away saturday night. frank gardner had been suffering a long illness. hundreds of people have been evacuated. flames crept within 500 feet of some homes. strong winds there expected to continued throughout the day. so far, no reports of any injuries but a third fire was put out yesterday and police arrested a california man on suspicion of causing the first fire by leaving behind hot coals from a campfire. now, to some wicked weather out west. residents in montana have some cleaning up to do after a tornado touched down there. at least one twister tore through the town of billings. witnesses say it ripped off the roof of a sports arena, damaged a bar and casino and destroyed an auto glass shop. no word on whether anyone was hurt or not. we are learning more about the suspect in a deadly tax at a california restaurant. police say jimmy slagger rode his bike to the restaurant, walked over to the table where his stepdaughter and her family were eating and opened fire. he then turned the gun on himself. his stepdaughter's house and 6- year-old son were killed. a tragedy for the governor of georgia and his staff. one their own killed by a drunk driver. a 24-year-old intern for governor sonny perdue was the designated driver for a group of friends when they were involved in the crash. police say the other driver ran a red light and hit the car. the driver's blood alcohol limit was nearly three times the legal limit. >> some lady decides to robert gates on the offensive about the troop surge in afghanistan. secretary gates told fox news sunday that people are too quick to call the war a failure and that it is going to take more time and patience to see results. he did admit it is going slower than expected but believes more progress will be evident by december. >> people are losing context. this policy, this strategy, has been in place and working for only about four or five months. we have yet to put yet a third of the surge forces into afghanistan. >> u.s. troops are supposed to begin withdrawing from afghanistan in july 2011. secretary gates says the pace of that withdrawal has not been decided yet. funeral services will be held in richmond, virginia today for singer and businessman jimmy dean. it is open to the public followed by a private burial. a public viewing was held yesterday. people streamed in to pay their last respects. jimmy dean was 81 years old. a crackdown on teen curfews in the district. that involved in an accident in southeast sunday afternoon t happened on suitland parkway at stanton road just after 2:00 a metro spokesperson says the brake went out on a car which hit the bus and the other vehicles. no word from police on who was at call the. no one was seriously hurt. metro is planning a memorial ceremony to remember those who died in last year's red line crash. this is video of the scene almost aier ago. nine people died. 80 were hurt in the system's deadliest crash. a letter was september to victims' families inviting them to the event at fort totten park at 10:00 a.m. a plaque with the names of the victims will be unveiled then. a couple of bicyclists in the district learned the hard way don't get too close for a presidential motorcade. this is video of a motorcade head back from a golf outing. apparently the riders didn't hear the tordz stop. agents got out of the car and physically made them keep their distance. the bicyclists complied and didn't move until the motorcade was gone. excitement is building over the car of the future. it is a small battery powered vehicle that launches in about a few months. we have a report. >> reporter: if you live in one of america's urban centers, you have probably gotten used to the sight of this car. this one is even more unique. the smart for 2 electric drive is a battery-powered version with a range of about 82 miles that on average will cost just $2 to drive 100 miles. >> how fit an electric power train in there? >> all the components we needed for the car do fit in the space that we cleared up from the conventional drivetrain. when you look at the battery, all we did was drop the fuel tank and fit the battery in there. same thing in the engine compartment. >> reporter: but the important question is how does it drive? the answer is not too bad. no jackrabbit start but it is pretty quick around town. 41 top speed is limited to 65 miles per hour. the ride quality is actually a little bit smooth he than regular cars thanks in part to the extra 300-pounds the electric drivetrain adds which is mounted low in the chassis and helps smooth out the ride. there is only one gear so you don't have to deal with the jerkiness that the standard is infamous for. it won't be cheap but it is the car of the future. unfortunately, running it doesn't come with somewhere to plug it in. at least we know it
