pressure, an area of low pressure that is right down south around fredericksburg and warrenton. let me slide out of the way and we'll put this in motion. you can see the heavy rain just off the coast right now down around north carolina but for our area again we're seeing some showers and we'll continue to see rain showers up until about midnight. after midnight it's drizzle for us. the same east and southeasterly flow will be staying with us for most of the week. the bulk of the rain right now those showers frederick, leesburg, dallas, warranton, around i-66 pushing west. more rain then headed toward hagerstown and winchester. wet it will be. again, do not put those rain boots or umbrellas away at all. our temperatures today sit in the 60s to low 70s throughout the area. 74 in d.c. 75 in charlottesville. nothing like the 80s we had this weekend. as far as your good night forecast goes, again, rain showers up until about midnight. after that we'll see some drizzle but take a look at the temperatures. they are going to be falling off. 69 degrees by 7:00 p.m. 68 by 9:00. then into the mid 60s by 11:00. we'll talk more about what you can expect for the morning rush and the rest of the week including of course memorial day we're looking forward to that. jim, pat? >> now to a developing story in the district. today federal prosecutors charged a former campaign worker for mayor vincent gray. thomas gore who worked on gray's 2010 campaign is accused of making illegal donations to mayoral candidate suleman brown. prosecutors say he also tried to destroy evidence of those donations. these are the first criminal charges connected to gray's campaign after a year-long federal probe. tom sherwood will have the very latest on this investigation. it's coming up right here on news 4 at 5:00 tonight. tomorrow marks exactly a year since the country's deadliest single tornado in decades. 161 died in joplin, missouri. tonight is graduation night and president obama plans to make an appearance. >> reporter: a year after her home was ripped to shreds fourth generation joplin resident jeanne george is finally getting it fixed thanks to americorps volunteers. hers is one of approximately 8,000 homes and 2,000 other buildings crushed by the category ef-5 tornado that tore through joplin last may 22nd. in 40 minutes it killed 161 people, injured 900, and destroyed or damaged 75% of the city. >> there's still a lot of rebuilding to be done. a lot of homes that were destroyed that have not been rebuilt. a lot of the disaster zone looks like fields. >> we watched in horror so many other people watch them suffer the pain and we've gone to funerals. >> will norton had just graduated high school and was driving home with his dad when the tornado literally sucked will out of the car, killing him instantly. >> just picked up the car and just, it was just like he went from zero to a hundred miles an hour in a split second and just all the glass blew out of the vehicle. there isn't a day goes by that you don't have sadness. >> everyone in joplin lost someone or something in that tornado. but they've also gained -- gained a new found appreciation for the important things in life. >> i'm thankful for every day. i feel so blessed everything we've gone through has taught us things, made us appreciate life even more even this tornado. >> reporter: president obama delivers the commencement speech to graduates of joplin high school tonight and for the anniversary date tomorrow a lot of events are planned including a community wide walk of unity. in joplin, missouri, news 4. this is day two of jury deliberations in the john edwards trial and still no verdict. the former democratic presidential candidate is accused of using nearly a million dollars in campaign contributions to hide an affair with his pregnant mistress during the 2008 presidential campaign. if convicted of all charges, he faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of $1.5 million. now the latest from the nato summit in chicago. nato allies are unveiling a new plan for afghanistan while protesters have again takeno the city streets. >> reporter: summit leaders think the framework for peace they adopted two years ago is working, that afghans are on track to provide their own security. in a couple of years with continuing help. >> today we can agree on nato's long-term relationship with afghanistan beyond 2014 including our support of afghan security forces. >> the 50 afghanistan partners will still provide security and a subsidy for afghan security after the troops are gone. former secretary of state madeline albright says she is an optimist on afghanistan. her main concern that afghan women may again be relegated to second place citizenship after nato's stewardship ends. >> societies are more stable when women are politically and economically empowered and we don't want to see the story go backwards in any way. >> meanwhile protesters target aircraft maker boeing, a vital cog they say in the war machine. boeing was shut down for the day having told its workers to stay home for safety's sake. a lot of downtown business has done that. normally full parking lots were all but deserted. traffic was light. demonstrators claim the boeing shutdown was a victory, celebrating with confetti and paper airplanes. not all nato protests have been so light hearted. on sunday police made 45 arrests, mostly stemming from this clash between anarchists and officers, a couple of blocks from the summit site. >> protesters have complained of the tactics but the police chief praised his officers' restraint. a former rutgers university student will spend 30 days in jail for spying on his roommate who later committed suicide. darwin ravi was placed on three years' probation in new jersey. his sentence stemmed from the death of his roommate tyler clemente who jumped off a bridge in 2010. clemente had learned that ravi used a web cam to watch him kissing another man. ravi was convicted of 15 charges including invasion of privacy, anti-gay intimidation, and witness tampering. during his sentencing his mother pleaded for leniency. clemente's mother was also in tears. >> why was he so arrogant and so mean spirited and evil? that he would humiliate and embarrass tyler in front of his new dorm mates? >> as a mother i feel that he has really suffered enough. >> reporter: ravi has also been ordered to get counseling and to pay $10,000 to a program to help victims of hate crimes. the judge did not recommend that ravi be deported home to india. the supreme court today refused to hear an appeal from a boston university student who was successfully sued for down loading music on the internet. today the high court said it won't hear an appeal from joel tenenbaum. the recording industry of america sued him for illegally downloading and sharing music on the internet. he was ordered to pay $675,000. that was back in '09. that is more than $22,000 for each of the songs he shared. tenenbaum's attorney says he'll continue to fight and that his client who just graduated on sunday cannot afford to pay the penalty. nearly one in four teens in this country has diabetes or will soon have diabetes if they're unable to get their blood sugar levels under control. erica edwards reports on a new study just released. >> reporter: the number of u.s. teenagers at risk for heart attacks and stroke has risen dramatically over the past decade. >> it's very concerning. >> reporter: the centers for disease control led a study of more than 3,000 teens. she and her colleagues found the prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes in teens increased from 9% in 1999 to 23% a decade later. and more than half of all over weight and obese teenagers had at least one other cardiovascular risk factor including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. dr. may says weight shouldn't be the only indicator of a looming problem. >> among those of normal weight about 37% had at least one or more cardiovascular disease risk factor. >> reporter: despite the grim statistics and the rise in diabetes the study found the prevalence of obesity in adolescence with a plateau. >> we think that may be why they're not seeing an increase in the prevalence of prehypertension and hypertension as well as high and borderline ldl in children. >> reporter: experts say adolescence is a key time for doctors and parents to intervene promote rg healthier lifestyles like exercise and healthy eating. another study out today finds evidence that obese teens already have damaged hearts with thicker heart walls. >> there is big excitement today in great britain. the olympic torch relay is now under way. the olympic flame arrived from athens on friday and was flown to the extreme southwest tip of england to a place in cornwall called land's end. on saturday the torch bearers began to carry the flame. when the 70-day relay concludes, 8,000 people will have carried the torch across the uk. the flame will be used to light the calderon at the opening games of the 2012 olympics on july 27th right here on nbc 4. >> we can't wait. when news 4 at 4:00 continues 1978 called "tragedy" the tragedy that's come back to this family. barry gibb is the only one left. we have a wonderful interview we did with robin just a few years ago and just to hear his self--effacing nature and for a guy who has made such an impact on the world of music great stuff. >> and of course we have all enjoyed their music. there was a moving tribute to donna summer last night at the billboard music awards as well as to whitney houston. >> yeah. whitney houston, i mean, it was a gorgeous rendition by jordan sparks singing whitney and of course bobby christina was there and spoke her first words. i can't believe the poise on bobby christina. i thought she'd be a nervous wreck but she was so comfortable and gracious in thanking the audience. sitting next to bobby christina, a little controversy unfortunately comes with a beautiful night of performances and is raja, brandy's younger brother who is i guess dating whitney in the epd. no one knows the exact details of the relationship but he was sitting next to bobby christina. pat houston, whitney's sister wanted to be. she asked for him to move. he wouldn't move. there was a report of eight uniformed officers being inside the theater trying to remove him. then pat had to ultimately make the call do we want to cause a big scene? she said no. so he stayed there the rest of the night. sadly it reminds me of whitney's funeral a little bit with bobby brown. wanted him to move and ultimately he leaves and it seems to be a little drama wherever we go. it was a beautiful, beautiful night. a of may. let's talk about the conditions right now because if you're not getting any drizzle, you're probably getting some rain showers right now. it's drizzly, damp, rainfall amounts throughout the area. .18 inch of rain la plata, maryland. rockville, maryland with spoi 33 inch of rain. severna park down to the south and east .13. folks, we're talking about being wet for the next couple days and the bulk of the week so it's mind over matter, right? shouldn't matter too much. so just put on a positive attitude for the week. 74 degrees right now with the wind out of the south at 10 miles per hour. and generally most of this week, too, we'll have a southeast to more of an easterly wind with these little areas of low pressure coming through. you got showers for 9:00, 11:00 p.m. early tomorrow morning some drizzle, some mist. even some fog around the area with our temperatures dropping down to the low to mid 60s by tomorrow morning. so we've got tropical storm alberto. it's off the coast of the carolinas. it's way down here. we've got an area of low pressure just to our south. we've got another area of low pressure and that one in kentucky. so all of the systems are going to keep us wet this week. and what is going on right now is of course that we do have showers pushing into our area as opposed to through our area with that easterly wind. we've got showers down toward front royal and moving off to the east so they'll be heading toward winchester and toward white post but rain pretty much light rain for most of the evening here so again it's umbrella weather for the evening. here is a look at your future weather. this area of low pressure hangs down toward here tomorrow morning, misty conditions, drizzles. we have another area of low pressure that's going to come into our area for tomorrow afternoon and that means the threat of not only showers but maybe some thunderstorms for the afternoon. this area of low pressure will be moving very slowly so even on wednesday there is the threat of rain. more showers and even some afternoon thunderstorms with any heating that we get and then one more day after that, too, for thursday. we could pick up another 0.5 to maybe inch plus throughout the area by the time we wrap this up on thursday. 65 to 70 degrees. we're humid, sprinkles, and drizzle around the area. again, with those cloudy and damp conditions then fog for tomorrow morning which will be pretty dense in some locations. probably down below a mile visibility. drizzle, showers. 58 to 64 degrees. traffic is probably going to be bad in the morning. handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we'll go live now to chicago where the president has been speaking at the nato summit. >> first we reached agreement on a series of steps to strengthen the alliances, defense capabilities over the next decade. in keeping with the strategic concept we agreed to in lisbon and in order to fulfill our article five commitment to our collective security we agreed to acquire a fleet of remotely piloted aircraft, drones, to strengthen intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. we agreed to continue air patrols over our baltic allies which reflects our unwavering commitment to collective defense. we also agreed on a mix of conventional, nuclear missile, and missile defense forces that we need and, importantly, we agreed on how to pay for them. that includes pooling our resources in these difficult economic times. we're moving forward with missile defense and agreed that nato is declaring an interim capability for this system. america's contribution to this effort will be a phased adaptive approach that we're pursuing on european missile defense and i want to commend our allies who are stepping up and playing the leadership role in missile defense as well. our defense radar in turkey will be placed under nato control. spain, romania, and poland have agreed to host key u.s. assets. the netherlands will be upgrading radars and we look forward to contributions from other allies. since this system is neither aimed at nor undermines russia's strategic deterrent i continue to believe that missile defense can be an area of cooperation with russia. second, we're now unified behind a plan to responsibly wind down the war in afghanistan. a plan that trains afghan security forces, transitions to the afghans, and builds a partnership that can endure after our combat mission in afghanistan ends. since last year we've been transitioning parts of afghanistan to the afghan national security forces and that has enabled our troops to start coming home. indeed, we're in the process of drawing down 33,000 u.s. troops by the end of this summer. here in chicago we reached agreement on the next milestone in that transition. at the isaf meeting this morning we agreed that afghan forces will take the lead for combat operations next year in mid 2013. at that time isaf forces will have shifted from combat to a support role in all parts of the country. this will mark a major step toward the goal we agreed to in lisbon -- completing the transition to afghan lead for security by the end of 2014 so that afghans can take responsibility for their own country and so our troops can come home. this will not mark the end of afghanistan's challenges, obviously, or our partnership with that important country. but we are making substantial progress against our core objective of defeating al qaeda and denying it safe haven while helping the afghans to stand on their own. we leave chicago with a clear road map. our coalition is committed to this plan to bring our war in afghanistan to a responsible end. we also agreed on what nato's relationship with afghanistan will look like after 2014. nato will continue to train, advise, and assist and support afghan forces as they grow stronger and while this summit has not been a pledging conference it's been encouraging to see a number of countries making significant financial commitments to sustain afghanistan's progress in the years ahead. today the international community also expressed its strong support for efforts to bring peace and stability to south asia, including afghanistan's neighbors. finally, nato agreed to deepen its cooperation with partners that have been critical to alliance operations as in afghanistan and libya. today's meeting was unprecedented. our 28 allies, joined by 13 nations from around the world -- europe, the middle east, north africa, and asia. each of these countries has contributed to nato operations in different ways. military, political, financial, and each wants to see us do more together. to see the breadth of those countries represented in that room is to see how nato has truly become a hub of global security, so, again, i want to thank all my fellow leaders. i think the bottom line is that we are leaving chicago with a nato alliance that is stronger, more capable, and more ready for the future. as a result, each of our nations, the united states included, is more secure and we're in a stronger position to advance the security and prosperity and freedom that we seek around the world. so with that, i'm going to take a couple questions and i'm going to start with julie pace of ap. >> the nato summit in chicago winding down. leaders focusing on wrapping up their involvement in afghanistan. as you heard the president by 2014 protests today were notably smaller and more peaceful than the demonstrations over the weekend that drew thousands to the streets of chicago. just two weeks from her court date the woman who has attracted nationwide attention as the tanning mom is speaking out. >> in an exclusive interview patricia krentcil told nbc that she never took her young daughter into a tanning booth and she wants to set the record straight about being a good mom. >> while she has come to be known as the tan mom patricia krentcil wants people to understand what her life is really all about -- that of a busy housewife and mother of five kids. >> i'm up at 3:00 in the morning making sure all the wash is done, my husband goes to work at 4:30. he works on wall street. and i make pancakes, pack their bags, and they're all off and gone. and then i work all day inside and outside of this house. >> reporter: in her back yard on a sunny day we spoke to krentcil exclusively about the attention surrounding her devotion to tanning and the allegations that she brought her then 5-year-old daughter inside a tanning bed, a claim she denies. >> she never went in. she never went in. >> reporter: prosecutors say krentcil's daughter anna now 6 turned up at her elementary school with a sunburn last month prompting a school nurse to contact police. although krentcil admits her daughter was burned she says it was caused by the sun and not artificial rays from a tanning bed. >> it was beautiful out and they went in the kiddie pool. she's a red head. she got sun burned. >> reporter: but essex county prosecutors allege anna's burns were caused by a trip to city tropics, a tanning salon krentcil visited up to 20 times a month. she has been charged with second-degree child endangerment. earlier this month krentcil pled not guilty in court. >> good morning, your honor. >> reporter: she continues to proclaim her innocence. >> i'm fighting these charges because i'm not guilty. every allegation was completely wrong and i just want people to leave us alone. >> reporter: but, like it or not, she has remained in the spotlight. her overly bronzed appearance making headlines and punch lines. >> she looks like wylie coyote after the dynamite stick blows up. >> reporter: she's inspired an action figure and even a skit on "snl." >> piece of bread. >> yeah? >> put it between my thighs. oh, my gosh. >> toast. >> reporter: krentcil says she has taken it all in stride. her kids have not. >> they're mad they're picking on mommy again. >> reporter: she says what upsets her most is how her tan complexion brought on negative comments about her parenting. now she has a message for those who judge her. >> step back, look in the mirror, and look at yourself instead of looking at me. i'm sorry i'm tanned. i like to be tanned. it just feels good. >> krentcil says she is looking forward to her day in court next month because she says she is innocent. a new york woman says she was fired for being too hot and she's now going after the company that let her go. she says she was hired as a data entry worker by a lingerie manufacturer in new york city's garment district. she says two days after she started her supervisor told her the orthodox jewish owners weren't happy with her attire and that her large breasts were a distraction. attorney gloria allred is representing her in filing a work place discrimination complaint against her former employer. the company native intimates has not commented. we'll have more on this discrimination case tomorrow on news 4 at 4:00. well, he starred in blockbuster movies but will smith can't get away from his early days in tv. >> here we go. the '90s he starred in "the fresh prince of bel air." take a look on bbc. smith revealed why he and his character shared the same name. >> it's funny because alfonso rivera who plays carlton when we first started the show we were trying to come up with names stop in our area for a book signing. plus songs and demos that didn't make the cut 25 years ago will return for michael jackson's 25th anniversary of bad. michael jackson's estate and record label are marking the 25th anniversary of his iconic "bad" album by re-releasing it in a new deluxe package. >> "bad 25" will be the first full jackson album to come out since his death in 2009. the three-cd box set includes new songs that didn't make it on to the first album. there is also a dvd of jackson's 1988 performance at wembley stadium. prince charles and lady diana were there along with 72,000 fans. the concert video was discovered in jackson's personal collection. it is believed to be the only copy of that performance. the "bad 25" package comes out september 18th. a rare picture from a beatles photo shoot is going to auction. it could sell for tens of thousands of dollars. the photo was taken back in 1969 as the group prepared to release the abbey road album. it shows beatles crossing abbey road in the opposite direction from the photo actually used on the cover. paul mccartney is also wearing sandals instead of walking barefoot. this picture is being sold by a private collector and is expected to fetch about $31,000. when news 4 at 4:00 continues we go one-on-one with bravo's andy coen and we get the scoop about reality we're jumping the puddles today but at least our south so that will be hanging on for the overnight period. in terms of how much rain we could get out of this, folks, anywhere from about a half to just over an inch of rain. most locations here in the blue. more than 2 inches possible just to our north around hagerstown. around winchester. even around frederick, maryland. that's how much we could get out of this -- these several systems over the next couple days with the rain probably not winding down or ending until sometime on thursday. your overnight temperatures and for tomorrow morning into the low 60s. it's going to be drizzly. it's white house with the salehis and i think the show became kind of over shadowed by that event and i think it was something the other women really regret because they had so many other things going on in their lives and it really -- that kind of sucked all the focus out. i really wanted to bring it back and find out what happened when stacy met her dad. i wanted to find out how cat, you know, tomorrow. technical problems stopped the falcon 9 from blasting off early saturday in florida. the count down clock at cape canaveral stopped just one second shy of launching. the company named space x says there was engine trouble. the next possible launch is tomorrow around 3:45 in the morning. falcon 9 is supposed to deliver supplies to the international space station. still ahead on news 4 at 4:00 seven months after a baby vanished from her bedroom the parents hope new information will help th it's been seven months since 10-month-old baby lisa vanished from her crib in the mid feel the night. craig mel vin reports on new information that may lead to a break in the case. >> reporter: it's been seven months since 10-month-old baby lisa vanished from her crib in the middle of the night. the kansas city police say they don't have much to work with but lisa's parents, debra bradley and jerry erwin hope exclusive information provided to nbc news leads to a break in the case. according to jeremy, one month after lisa disappeared, his debit card was suspended because of fraudulent charges. documents provided by irwin show one transaction for $69.04 which he claims leads to a website specializing in changing your or your child's name. kansas police say they're investigating the debit card issue but it does not look promising or appear to be anything more than stolen card numbers. >> it's not a joke. it is not a circus. it is not a game. this is my baby. >> reporter: lisa's parents last spoke out to dr. phil about their daughter's disappearance in february. jeremy says he got home at 3:45 the morning of october 4th. the door was unlocked. lights were on. lisa's crib was empty. debra has admitted to having several drinks the night lisa was reported missing and does not remember when she last checked on her. police searched the home and scoured woods just three miles away close to where a witness says he saw a man carrying a baby around the time lisa went missing. according to authorities, no information has surfaced about the man and the search has so far come up empty. now her parents hope this latest development brings their daughter home. >> lisa's parents say they are frequently in contact with the fbi but they are frustrated it's been several months and they still have very few answers. now at 5:00 new developments in a d.c. political scandal.
