>> very much, linda. we've heard that you have a skating background. we're hoping you can do a demonstration if possible. if you have an extra pair of skates, in the next half-hour. 9:17. 55 degrees on the thermometer. temperature have actually been falling all morning long. in fact, coming to work, 4:00 this morning, it was 60 degrees. so we've lost five degrees on the thermometer and there's a good reason for that. besides the fact it's just the early morning hours we have to deal with this wind from the northeast. for those baseball fans that were watching the game last night and saw the heavy drizzle and mist that invaded yankee stadium, well, that northeasterly wind, that has been dragging all this cloud band on down towards the south, as that storm departed off the coast it really opened up the gates for this brand new air mass and looks like this maritime polar air mass is going to lock us in with the clouds, with the cool temperatures. much different story when we pinwheel our way across the nation's heartland. look at this mess. severe weather expected from central kansas all the way through texas. where there could actually be tornadoes or large hail this afternoon. that storm also responsible for throwing the snow back towards denver, heavy snow there, about a foot in the metro area. with over 30 inches in jefferson county just to their west. what a good time for them. the snow is just out towards the plains. still dealing with that for another day or two. while they are dealing with the cold side of the storm we'll get the warm push, that also means rainfall into the halloween weekend. 62 today. we stay dry but tonight expect that moisture really to lock us down with some drizzle and fog at daybreak. 48 degrees. quick peek at 62 tomorrow but i want to jump ahead to saturday. we'll jump to 73. late in the day. unfortunately for the trick-or-treaters, through sunday, plan on rain. back to you. passion. this is what this is all about. i want to you meet bob heddig. >> great to be here. >> say hello to paige. this little girl, when she was 1, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. that that's why we're here today to raise money for pediatric brain tumor. how did you get involved? >> being in the right place at the right time. with the right people. about 16 years ago i was introduced to the ride for kids, met the foundation's president, mike trainor, he filled me in. i raised money for others and i didn't think all the money was going where they said it was. after doing research on the pediatric brain tumor foundation i discovered they were about as squeaky clean as they could be. >> he raised $86,000 just recently? >> yes. >> you're going over $100,000. let's talk about the event first. what you want to do is you want to give this bike to somebody. >> one lucky person is going to win this motorcycle. and this is the most incredible supersport bike on the market. they are not available until december of this year. it's the bmw first foray into the world's super bike racing and everything. >> the ultimate bike challenge? >> yes. >> then we have another event going on november 14th. >> this culminates the entire ultimate bike raffle. tickets are $40 or three for $100 to get the amazing t-shirt that paige is wearing. you can wine and dine with us. we have a live auction. one of our customers donated a 1969 bmw, to be auctioned off to the benefit of the foundation. other fun stuff. >> we were talking before we started the show. i want you to talk about the young woman that made such an impact on your life. >> 16 years ago i met a young lady named christina higgs, 11 or 12 at the time and diagnosed with a very bad brain tumor. i don't remember the exact medical terminology. her life expectancy was not too good but fortunately through the research that the foundation has sponsored and paid for over the years she is still around, she's graduated college. the foundation now actually has college scholarships. there's tons of hope for paiges out there. that's why we raise the money to give kids a better chance. >> good man. keep raising the money. bob's bmw, tell you what, you want to hear this growl a little? get her off the bike here. we're going to start this baby up. should we stand back? you know what you are doing? >> it's loud but i think it's ok. >> start it up. >> yes. gun it. oh. >> you're a good man, bob. paige, you ok? get me out of here! >> that one is a little louder than the side car. >> raising money for paige. >> between paige and the dog and the studio, thanks. all your favorite disney characters are in charm city this weekend. >> a new boyfriend. mickey. he has a special trick for you. take it away, mickey! >> oh, look at him. isn't he great? we're going to have so much more fun. you have to stay with us. all that's coming up. thank you. but before we go to break we want to let you know, if you have a business, charity or organization and you want a brief shoutout on the air, send your mugs to 5400 -- 6400 york road, baltimore, maryland, 21212. our "cup of joe" segment. we'll be right back. now we've got the dog on the motorcycle. where is this show going? welcome back. thank you for joining us. if you want to go ice skating you usually have to wait to winter, go to a rink, travel to the midwest but wait. baltimore has got some skating this weekend. >> here she is up on skates, linda so. tell us. >> i don't mean to disappoint you but i don't have the skates on. you don't want to see me skating. but we've got great skaters and we'll bring them out in a bit. this is all about disney on ice. a brand new show called "celebrations," here is matthew buttrey, here to tell us more about it. he's put it together. from the ground up. >> i've been able to help put the show together. i can't say it was all me, no. with -- but yeah, in early june we started predocuments in l.a. we -- preproduction in l.a. and brought it to lakeland, florida, to put the show together. and this is our product. >> reporter: and the theme? >> celebrations. you have the opportunity to celebrate your favorite holiday with your favorite disney character as well as traveling all around the world to -- for celebrating different celebrations >> reporter: can you give us a sneak peek? >> we've got a couple of things up our sleeve here. we even learned how to fly kites on the ice. in our chinese festival that you see here. so much fun. it's not as easy as you think flying these kites. first we started learning it on the ground. if you can fly it on the ground, you can fly it anywhere. then we decided to put it on ice. >> reporter: that's amazing. this is kind of the celebration going on where? >> in china for the chinese new year. we also celebrate with princes and princesses in our show. we have the new princess, tiana from the cartoon "the principle -- the sin press and the frog which comes out in late november, early december. >> reporter: you have a lot of princes and princesses? >> yes, cinderella, prince charming, snow white and her handsome prince. the list goes on. we have fun characters from "alice in wonderland." >> reporter: so much fun. we're looking forward to it. can we get mickey over here again? can you hear us? yeah, mickey, come on over here! i mean, you've got to get a close-up of this costume. it's just beautiful. isn't it? tickets are still available. they are $14 to $54 right here at first mariner. come here, you did a great job. we have a show tonight, one tomorrow, saturday, sunday. sunday's the last day so you want to get one. mickey, thank you so much. you want to say hello, baltimore? aw. isn't he cute? you can't miss this. hello, baltimore. thank you, mickey. >> thank you. looks like fun out there. very colorful and pretty. >> a lot of high school seniors are looking forward now to college but getting there is not easy. miriam king has a few ideas. she braings -- breaks it down. >> healthy eating during halloween? good luck but there are ways to eat healthy with the candy around. tips just ahead. off to college. another round of s.a.t. scores come out today. early applications are in, the wait begins. we got to bring in miriam king. here she is. >> nice to see you again. >> the university of baltimore. our expert in guiding you through this whole college procedure. let's talk about the applications. what do we need? we have to fill it out, get the kids on-line. we didn't have to do that when we were young. >> true. but you can do it all on line. that gives you a chance to really clean it up, not make mistakes and in many cases you don't have to pay a fee because you're applying on-line. >> you got the application in. then you have to write the essay. that's what some people have to really sit down and buckle down and write. >> i do have some advice about the essay. it's important to write about what you know about, not about some popular theme that you may not know about but really to write from your own experience. >> when they give you a question, and you say ok, that's the one i can sink my teeth into? >> right. proof it carefully. >> yeah. then you need two letters of recommendation. >> often two, sometimes three. it should be from someone who knows your ability to think, to learn. it should not be from a friend. it should be from someone who understands your academic ability. >> should students and parents send even more stuff? here's a picture of me and the president. here's -- should they even send stuff like that? >> it's a question of the college that you're applying to. sometimes that will be read. sometimes it won't be paid attention to. i think the admission counselor is a good key to what you should do for that particular college, to which you're applying. >> listen to the counselor. >> list on that person because that person is the guide for you for that particular institution. >> explain early action early decision. >> early action is a process by which a college decides who they are going to take in their first group of admits for the next year. it's nonbinding. early decision, on the other hand, once you're accepted to that institution and you accept the admission you have to decline offers of admission from other institutions. so it is binding. and the advantage is that oftentimes students get into very selective institutions in the early decision process, plus they can relax and enjoy the rest of the senior year, but it does really narrow down the selection and if there's a change in circumstances, financial or whatever, you may not want to narrow the choices that early. >> also, if you're a junior out there, start doing the research now? >> that's correct. it's never too early to start the college search process. >> i've used her time and time again. go to abc2news.com and go under the "ask miriam" section there. you can ask anything you need. she'll guide you all the way through it here. you never sweat, do you? >> no. >> you never feel pressure. ask miriam. she came from the university of baltimore. thank you for coming in. >> thank you. megan. >> look at penny. she won't go to college, won't cost money and you can get her for a discount price at the maryland spca. plus look at that face. the number right there, dr. fioramonti brought her in. he was kind enough. with the good friends at the maryland spca. tell us about her. >> a 1-year-old mixed dachshund spaniel. about 20 pounds so she'll be small. she's full grown. cute as a button. look at that. she's at the maryland spca. she and her brother came in a couple of weeks ago. i think her brother has a home, we're not positive but we think so. she's lonely, looking for a home, 235-8826. give them a call, tell them you're interested in penny. let's see if we can get her a home this week. if can you pry me out of my arms. i may keep her. you've been in the long time. one thing we wanted to talk about today. halloween candy. is this really a concern and what exactly is it you need to worry about? >> on a limited basis it's a concern. again, we want to remind all viewers that halloween is coming up, there will be a lot of candy sitting around, people will have bowls of candy to hand out to the trick-or-treaters when they come to the house on halloween. in addition the kids are going to have bags of candy around. their room. from the trick-or-treating they did, to pick up candy. and we want to make sure that everybody keeps that candy up high so your pet can't get it. a lot of times the dog will just get into the bag of candy and eat all the chocolate candies that are in there. it does take a lot of chocolate to cause problems for our pets but you need to remember that dogs can react to excessive amounts of chocolate. increases their heart rate, they can have a lot of nervous problems and neurologic problems so let's make sure we keep that candy up really high. with this time of the season we want to make sure you keep your pets restricted. let's keep them in the house, let's maybe put them in a bedroom that is a little further from the trick-or-treaters, if you're constantly opening the door to give out candy -- it's stressful, they don't like the is no, they bark, get upset, they can sometimes sneak out the front door on you and be running around on halloween, not a good thing. keep your pet restricted, keep gates closed. if the pet gets upset with the kids making noise and screaming and yelling, maybe put the tv or radio on just to give a little background noise so they will hear that. and have a happy halloween. >> one quick thing you mentioned, it takes a lot of chocolate but a dog is never going to say i've never had enough chocolate. >> dog will never say that. she may need a half pound of chocolate before she starts having signs. even if she doesn't have too much chocolate she can get a bellyache like kids do. some dogs get into a bunch of candy apples and things like that and they are ballooned up and mushroomed up and then there's a bad upset stomach we have to treat. >> keep this in mind, you can save your pet a lot of physical trauma as well as a lot of emotional trauma. one more time, give us the number and let's get another shot of penny. >> 235-8826. see if we can get her a home. otherwise megan is going to have to take her home. >> that wouldn't be so bad though my husband put a moratorium on dogs. that's it. she's up for adoption. she's as cute as can be. good dog. look at those ears. >> great. >> she's laid back. i was worried about her. >> she's good. america ferrera stars in "ugly betty." the all new episode is tomorrow morning. we're talking live with america, still ahead. 9:38. i've been having a lot of fun this morning just looking at cameras of snow. in colorado. why not do it again? let's take you out there. my favorite spot of the day. woodland park, colorado. they are dealing with about a foot and a half to two feet of snow. and they are still driving out there. that's what it's all about. 13 degrees there. 54 despite the cloud cover here in parkville. overall, we expect to have a little overcast day. 59 degrees a we may -- as we may briefly hit near 60, pull back this afternoon. plan for drizzle and fog, in the upper 40s overnight. that colorado storm actually brings us a chance of some thunder over the weekend. we'll talk about the chance of halloween rain coming up in a bit. 9:39. more of "good morning maryland" after this. hi. hey, i need a new cell phone. well, right now you can get verizon wireless plus fios tv, internet and phone. wow. that really is beautiful, isn't it? >> yes. 52 degrees, looking at a chilly day now. further north and east in employer, the issue is the wind, not the strong wind but about the wind direction. northeasterly flow. already gusting to 11 miles per hour but it's about taking that air mass coming down the slopes of canada and new england and dragging all that cool damp air into the region. that's why we've got the low clouds that will look threatening today. we're probably not going to get rain from it. however, we may develop drizzle, i'm expecting that to hold off until tonight but it's possible, especially up 95 if you travel cecil county, delaware, new jersey, could develop some of that drizzle as we head on in through the late afternoon or evening hours but essentially it's just a distant part of the big storm that is dominating most of the nation. we've already talked about this, the heavy snow in denver, how about that severe weather? this storm which is cranking up a lit of wind, the reason they are pushing that snow on the cold side but also severe weather with tornadoes, damaging wind, even the possibility of large hail with this particular line stretching from east central kansas all the way down near the dallas/fort worth area. this storm will continue to pump the moisture up. though the main band of rain is still well on down towards our south and west it will try to push in here by late tomorrow and definitely by the weekend. a mostly cloudy day, 62 degrees. a breeze will pick up this afternoon and tonight. that will help to generate some of that drizzle and fog. again, overnight towards daybreak a better chance of it actually happening but it's possible to move in at any point in time. 48 degrees, locking in the cool damp air mass that will hold us with the clouds tomorrow. we may switch the wind from northeast to east to southeast which could just push us back up to 62. and then we'll try to massage the thermometer to 73. that's halloween. that is another warm halloween in our stretch but it comes with late-day rain, trick-or-treaters will be wet, unfortunately, we stay wet through sunday and a reminder we turn the clocks back one hour november 1st, the end of daylight savings time. tomorrow night you'll be watching "ugly betty." this episode is called the weiner, the bun and the boob." america joins us live in new york. good morning. nice to talk to you again. >> good morning. >> you had the red glasses, the joe flacco eyebrows. it looks like betty is leaving homely behind now. >> betty is definitely growing up a little bit. she's growing into, you know, growing into the professional mature editor that she's become. and there are a few physical changes this season for betty. >> you talk about the bright colors, the lines repeated the next day after the show, the wardrobes we like. how proud are you of this show? >> i'm so proud. still having such a great time. i feel so lucky for that. i do love the show. i love the characters. i love the cast. i love, you know, what it has come to mean for so many people. this character. not just betty but a lot of the other characters have become very inspirational to the fans and as long as there are fans and people who are loving it it's really exciting to make it. >> do you have a lot of girls on the back of your shoulder when you feel like you're on screen? >> i don't feel that pressure. i mean, i know that the character means a lot to a lot of young girls. the younger kind of generation. but i don't really take that into it. i like that betty is flawed, not perfect, she makes mistakes and that challenges come her way and she doesn't always handle them in the best way but she comes out the other end and tries to take the best of it. i think we've done a really good job of keeping the integrity of the character but allowing her to kind of grow up and make mistakes in that process. >> i know the three seasons of course are out on dvd now of "ugly betty." now that you have a new time slot on friday night a lot of people are -- are you ok with that? friday nights on abc? >> yeah. i think that our fans are going to find us no matter what. there are people who have been watching the show from the beginning. i think there are so many different ways that people watch television these days. it's not run home and you have to choose between one show or the other. we've got so many different ways to catch up. i think that our pans will find us wherever we are. >> beautiful america with "ugly betty." thank you very much for joining us. you'll be able to see "ugly betty" tomorrow night right here at 9:00 followed by "20/20" at 10:00 and abc news at 11:00 with the beautiful marybeth marsden. we'll be right back. and that's how verizon fios works. any questions?
