Midnight. And this tropical wave just between puerto rico and the dominican republic, its still an invest meaning its a tropical wave, not a tropical system at this point. They are sending in the Hurricane Hunters every day. Yesterday, they didnt find a closed circulation. Thats good news. And in the short term, actually doesnt have a good chance of developing. But once we get into the five day range, thats an 80 chance of becoming tropical. And lets focus on gaston with 45 Miles Per Hour winds. Should weaken and then strengthen again out to sea. And not an issue for land masses. Now thats the difference between that and invest 99. It will impact land masses. It will head toward the bahamas. If its not a tropical system by the time it heads into the bahamas, good chance it will at that point. This is saturday morning. After that, it heads toward the florida area, more than likely, how strong it is, thats still it comes. Anywhere from east florida over toward the central portion of the gulf of mexico. But where ever it does, it should at least enhance our rain chances slightly. Today hot at 92. In weather and traffic on the 8s, i go hourbyhour through todays forecast. Its a call some call condescending though. Candace mccowan was there, you had opportunity to speak one on one, the only local tv reporter to do so. Did he address this call to appeal to minority voters . Reporter yeah, he made the then again yesterday to a crowd at the Florida State fairgrounds saying that the hispanic voter has been treated horribly. And i asked the republican nominee about how some of the comments have been received. You said that in the past couple weeks, you may have said some things that are wrong. Can you say specifically what those things are . No, i dont want to talk about that. I think probably once in a while i could make statements a little differently. A lot of statements frankly. Reporter and trump saying he is an honorable person but if he softened up things, that would be okay. Thing, that would be okay. Trump touched on job creation and taking swipes at Hillary Rodham clinton. Now viewers getting fired up about this. Its 6 08 on this thursday morning and time for weather and traffic on the 8s. Yeah, i wanted to ho you this. The hurricane i wanted to show you this. The Hurricane Hunters have arrived in 99l. And they left from Macdill Air Force base. Left tampa, flew down and just made it into the outer reaches. About a 35 Miles Per Hour wind. We can track them as theyre speed theyre picking up. Yesterday, they didnt find organization. Strong winds but not organization. So we will see if its become more organized. Once that happen, we will better information. For today, it will start out sunny and muggy, about 88 degrees at noon. 20 rain chance then. 40 rain chance through the early afternoon and early evening. With a high today of 92 degrees. So low to mid90s, high humidity, yeah, that continues. And now rain chances about 40 through saturday. And chance up to 50 for sunday, monday and tuesday with the extra tropical moisture in place because of course we have the tropics out there, the wave near puerto rico could increase our rain chances. Leslee, how about traffic on the 8s . Looking good on the veterans expressway. Sun coast parkway up to speed as well. State road 54 to ehrlich road, i75 Miles Per Hours. And still great from ehrlich to 275, thats where it gets busy. But traffic light, nine minutes on the drive. And a very good drive through u. S. 19 and also u. S. 41. Still looking good. All right, lets take a look at whats going on. And we have activity out here. You can see the sun is. Cooing up. Theres a semitruck here and also possibly a vehicle here. You can see that light theyre pointing out activity here on the right shoulder. This is eastbound right at county line road. And im keeping an eye on this one for you. Thats a look at weather and traffic on the 8s. Back to gene and gayle. We will check back. Thank you, leslee. A yearbook picture photo shop controversy. Yeah, coming up message in one photo that has a bay area father outraged and taking action. And the changing social lessons for students. Coming up, i explore the debate over including social issues like the lgbt movement in our classrooms. Youre watching news channel 8 time now 6 13. Right now, the desperate search continues in italy for survivors still trapped in the rubble of a 6. 2 earthquake. You can see here, crews are going through piles of rock and sand that were once buildings. Well overnight, the number of people who died in the earthquake jumped to 247. Officials now worry that number could continue to climb. Among the death and destruction in italy, there are stories of survival. Look another this incredible old girl alive in the rubble and they pulled her out to safety. Beautiful moment. This morning, the number of People Killed in an attack on the American University in afghanistan jumped to 10. More than 700 students were on campus when attackers stormed the campus with guns and grenades. Afghan Security Forces gunned down two attackers. They are trying to figure out a motive. So far, no one has claimed responsibility. Very few americans attend the univer Department Says a number of americans serve on the faculty. This morning, we get schooled on diversity as a classroom subject. Social issues had many of us talking this summer including some of our kids but whether the social issues belong in the classroom depends on who you and. Its critical to our young people understanding the problems. Parents should be handling it at home. Reporter protests tied to race relations. Controversy surrounding gender exposed to it this summer. Its a fact. Its reality. And anything thats real should be talked about. Reporter this grandfather of nine, martin, believes these are learning opportunities for the classroom. But a fellow tampa resident sees them as destructions. I dont think they should be interfering with education in the classroom. Reporter hillsborough schools say Current Events do not affect the Africanamerican Studies Program and lgbt topics are not studied because they are not part of the florida standards. In pinellas, schools address the subjects in special programs that require parent permission. Students are talking about these and its important to them. Reporter still, they are touchy topics, especially for different age groups. While he doesnt want it discussed with his third grader, thomas sees the value for high school students. Theyll get to learn how to treat others. And be productive citizennings. Mostly discussed at home and in out of class workshops. Getting curriculum changed and creating culture response can be difficult. Theres a lot of red tape in School Districts and we recognize that. Reporter and across the country, california just included lgbt education in its curriculum. There kids in 6 grade will learn about different types of families and older students will learn about important lgbt figures and events like the samesex marriage Supreme Court controversial topic that if parents want to see in the classroom, they need to talk to principals and take to it the school board and the state level because its the florida standards. Parents are tweeting and they are torn about the issue but i think its important that theres a place that kid cans go if the parents consent where they can talk about it instead of relying on gossip in the hallways. The genesis prep yearbook a lifetime also contained a hidden hateful phrase. A former student yearbook staffer slipped in the words kill me over a picture of a student shooting a basketball. Leaving both her and the school administers confused, shocked and horrified. I dont like it. I mean, i obviously wasnt expecting it. I dont know why he did it. Theres nothing thats more mortifying as an administer of a school than to see Something Like that. The former staffer picked up litter over part of the summer as punishment. For her picture, yearbook owners can put a fixed sticker over the original photo. A suspected burglar used an unusual getaway car, a school bus. It happened as the bus driver was picking up students in bradenton to take them to school. Police tell us that the 28year old jumped on the bus. The driver thought he was a student at Manatee High School so he told him to sit down. Wanted to get home. When the bus arrived at the school, the driver called police and administers and he is now facing a charge of trespassing on school property. And he is suspected of a burglary in the area where the bus picked him up. Lets get a check on weather and traffic on the 8s. Well, good morning. First of all this morning, its already steamy and remember now the sun is coming up later. And eventually officially rising after 7 00 a. M. By 8 00 a. M. , its 80 and muggy couple showers as early as lunchtime. 88degrees at noon. Toasty for your lunch break and 92 at 4 00 p. M. With a 40 chance of storms. Tampa, youre at 78. Currently 76 degrees in wimauma. 73 in zephyrhills. 77 in clearwater and in st. Petersburg. And i checked in with dora in inverness, she says its 73 degrees. So a fast warmup once that morning sunshine pops up. During the afternoon, east to west breeze means we will get a. M. And 2 00 p. M. To start. And then those showers will push toward the coast in the evening and clear out overnight. So we do it all again tomorrow. Going to be another sunny start to the day with an east breeze and we see storms pushing in our direction. Also tomorrow, ill start keeping an eye on this tropical system thats currently a tropical wave as it heads towards the bahamas. It has a better chance of getting stronger and notice what happen, this is ability noon on saturday, the little bit diverging. Could be anywhere from the east coast of florida into the gulf of mexico. But because its heading our way, thats why i at least bump the rain chance up now to 50 sunday, monday and tuesday. And if we have to bring the rain chances up or down, it will depend on what happens with the system. And leslee has more interesting things going on on i4. Yeah, i4 at county line road. Got off the phone with the Lakeland Police department. And they said there was an earlier incident that happened to i4 at county line road. This is not an accident. And our friends over at fdot have moved the camera over. We can see theres a vehicle out there. They zoomed in. And what i saw was authorities with flashlights looking into this vehicle. Searching this vehicle. Now just over to the left here, thats where the interstate is. Thats i4 at county line road. And there are several Police Vehicles and emergency vehicles out there on the right shoulder. So keeping an eye on this for you. And meanwhile, semitrucks in thck part of this. Usually a lot of semitruck drivers will pull over to sleep and so forth like. That thats a look at weather and traffic on the 8s. Back to gene and gayle. Thank you. Your vehicle may be at risk of stalling unexpectedly while driving. Could be dangerous. Up next, a recall alert you wont want to miss. Youre watching news channel 8 when it hit, it really was quite dramatic. Road signs bent over because of the force of the water. You know, gushing down the street everywhere anything that anyones left out is moving down the street. We always think were the keeper of the house. So it makes a lot of sense you would have flood insurance. Knowing that you have that and if you need it, its going to be there, and youve done everything you can that this house might be here in a hundred years for another family to enjoy it. Now an 8 on your side alert this morning. Ford is recalling several vehicles that could stall unexpectedly. It involves flex wagon ands ford taurus models from 2013 through 2015. Heres the problem, its with the fuel pump control module. If that fail, the engine may not start or it could stall while youre driving. One little new jersey boy did quite the generous deed for law enforcement. The 5yearold spent his allowance money on subway sandwiches and took them to william says he just wanted to make sure the officers had a healthy meal and as a thank you, william went home with a number of gifts including a shirt. And get this, he a shoutout from the Police Departments facebook page. So sweet. Got to keep them healthy. And i like his hair cut too. A glitch with iphones . New in the next half hour, why some iphone 6s are coming down with what experts call touch disease. Phones. Up next, weather and it is 6 28. Mostly clear skies and 78 degrees as we look over downtown tampa. And im sure the kids headed to the bus stop up. 80 and humid when the bus picks them up. Dropping them off in a steamy afternoon, 92 with a 40 rain chance. We will see the first few showers as early as 11 00 a. M. Or noon. Rain chance goes up to 40 as the rain heads toward the coast. How about traffic on the 8s . Looking at travel time, 275, i4 to the hoc, about five minutes. Still looking good bearss avenue to i4, up to 11 minutes good speeds on 275. In next report, an update on the Police Activity on eastbound i4 at county line preventing concert overdoses. Tampa city council is expected to discuss the finings of an investigation of the sunset Music Festival. Ahead in a live report, what this could mean for future concerts in tampa. And e trump. News channel 8 gets an exclusive interview with the republican president ial candidate. Still ahead, what he had to say about his immigration policy and the building of a wall to our Candace Mccowan. Were tracking the tropics for you this morning. Many of you are keeping a close eye on these storms in the atlantic this morning. We have hurricane gaston and also invest 99l which could become a tropical storm. So a lot going on out there. Good morning. Im gayle guyardo. And im gene ramirez. Thank you for waking up with us on this thursday morning. Lets get straight to meteorologist leigh spann. Shes been busy. Yes, and this is the time of year when we expect the tropics to get active. Watching now two systems, hurricane gaston just after midnight became the third hurricane of the season. Then we have an invest or basically a tropical wave that has an 80 chance over the next five days of developing into something tropical. Gaston, the latenf in on that. 75Miles Per Hour winds now. Its expected to weak and then strengthen again but the best news of all, it stays out to sea. So now lets focus in on 99l because the Hurricane Hunters left from tampa early this morning. We can track them with our weather equipment here. And while theyre flying around, we are getting real wind speeds that theyre seeing. They got about a 38 Miles Per Hour gusts but theyll go back and forth and see if its actually developing. We know that theres strong system. When that happens, we get better information in to these models. What we know now, its going to head toward the bahamas. Between now and then, not in a Good Environment for developing. Thats good news. Once it get to the bahamas, it enters an area where it could strengthen. Possibility that it will become a tropical storm. We will watch most of the models taking this through florida and into the gulf of mexico which would enhance our rain chances. One of models is this european model. Right over miami, and then heads up toward tampa, eastern portion of florida. The american model much weaker at this point. So obviously a lot in question, what those Hurricane Hunters finds will certainly give us better information. Coming up 6 38, more of a forecast for us today. But i know you have a lot of information about some interesting things going on too. This is i4 eastbound right at county line road. Heres whats going on, folks. We have a lot of Police Activity on the right shoulder. And earlier, off of camera to the far right, theres a vehicle out there. And there was a lot of search lights that saw police going and searching in the vehicle with flashlights and taking pictures in that vehicle. Again, off to the grass just outside of the camera. And looks like that vehicle is also crashed up. But no delays. W thank you. Happening today, tampa city leaderses expected to talk about a spring Music Festival that left two people dead and many more injured. We told new may when dozens of people fell ill at the sunset Music Festival at Raymond James stadium. Ryan hughes is live from tampa city hall. But they plan to theres no repeat. Mayor bob buckhorn was outraged right after the incident. Listen here. This was not happenstance. These types of festivals attract this type of drug use and these types of drugs. Reporter and theres one option on the table, the shut down the festival altogether. We will learn exactly what if i circumstantials learned in the investigation here at a meeting later today. Gene and gayle, back to you. We will be on top of it. Paining in New Hampshire today. This after he held a huge rally on wednesday in tampa. News channel 8s Candace Mccowan talked to trump one on one. And i think its important to point out that she was the only local reporter that to get the exclusive interview with donald trump. Shes joining me now. So candace, did you get the sense because theres been talk that hes softening up on immigration, what do you think after talking to him . Reporter gene and gayle, good morning. This is one of the things that many people were listening for. They want direction he is headed. Immigration one of the first things i asked about. The campaign is hoping to ale poo to more voters by softening their stance. Talking to supporters yesterday and they were telling me, immigration, where you stand, what you have been saying for months, thats what they love about you. Yep. How do you toe the line between soften your stance and keeping those people . Well, i think we have a strong stance but a fair stance. And i use the word humane. Its a humane stance. The wall goes up. People come into our country but they come in through a legal process. Very important. We want people to come to the country but they have to come in through the legal process. Reporter minutes after the interview, trump echoed the plans in front of a crowd of hundreds. And trump saying, i will be the greatest jobs president that god ever created. Of course, the president ial candidates are always a talker when it comes to social media. Mark tweeting, just attend tampa trump rally. It was great. Lets win in and others tweeting, saying, unattainable promises and not trump. Trump started his rally yesterday talking about a new poll showing him ahead by two points. A Florida Atlantic university poll. But if you take all the polls near florida, average them together, it still shows Hillary Rodham clinton has a lead in florida. Well, it was a very interesting interview. You can find it on wfla. Com. I also up loaded it on my facebook page. Definitely worth a listen. Thank you. If a new report is true, your phone might have a major design flaw and it could die at any time. Nobody wants to hear that. Meredyth censullo is here to tell us why our phones might be toast. Say it aint so. Reporter yeah, sorry for the bad news. If youre like me, my phone is my alarm clock, my personal camera. But if you have an iphone 6, you could lose touch at any time. Its called touch disease. Some iphone 6 and 6 plus users report over time the touch screens become unresponsive and eventually a flickering gray bar appears on the top of the screen. After that, the phone may be operational only sometimes and unlikely to make a full recovery. Now the issue appears to affect iphones that are approaching two years old. The root cause according to repair vendors is a problem with two chips on the iphone that govern responsiveness. If those chips go bad or become disconnected, the phone will no longer respond to touch. Tim gold, a doctor of activity on i4devices says theres nothing you can download to fix the problem and you have no choice but to pay for major surgery. So i mean the only option you really have is to find a repair and replace the chips do or do an out of warranty swap at apple. Reporter right now, apple stores and certified apple repair techs are not equipped for the repair. And based on reports online and in apples Complaint Forum on web, so farther not acknowledging theres an issue. But i did learn that if you have an iphone 6 thats one of the newer iphone 6s, this is not an issue. The biggest thing is to and if its more than two years old, you could run into that problem.
