western maryland right now. don't complain. we may get a few snow flakes here in central maryland. there's a travel advisory in western maryland as the frontal advisory pushed through. 37 at bwi partly cloudy skies. it's 41 at the inner harbor. there's the pink that you see just pushing through hagerstown, a burst of activity with snow showers. look at the temperature, that's the more important thing to notice, 19 in oakland. we have very frigid digits on the other side of that frontal boundary. that means we will be seeing much colder air in place tomorrow. the temperatures in the upper 30s through lunchtime. we will break at 40 degrees. we should be at 33 for this time of year. get ready because an arctic blast comes our way. i will outline the cold hard facts in just a little bit. what do you say right now? we check in and see how forecast the traffic is going on this monday morning. here is candace dold. >> reporter: thank you, tony. we have a new incident just into our newsroom. it's in mount airy a bus fire that shuts down all the lanes of westbound 70 on route 37, traveling in the mount airy region. just be aware that is completely shutdown. we will get you more details as soon as we can get them into our newsroom. as for the main lines traveling on i-70, you can see those cars are traveling a nice and calm ride on both the inner loop lanes and the outer loop direction heading toward 95. the entire stretch from 795 to 95 running normal an 11 minute clip at 55 miles per hour. on 95, the fort haik henry tunnel, that will take only 4 minutes at 55 miles per how. if you're going to go to on 895 on the southbound lanes from the harbor tunnel to 895, t that wil take 9 minutes at 54 miles per hour. that's a look at morning commute. back to you. candace, thank you. police investigate a deadly weekend in the city of baltimore. 3 men shot to death in separate crimes. among the victims a jewelry store owner. police say 58-year-old wayne rodder was found in the back room of his baltimore home on saturday with gunshot wound. police say it appears nothing was taken from his store and at this point the motive is unclear. >> it's definitely a mystery we are trying to get to the bottom of. >> no one comes after dark or anything. >> police found 53-year-old ashley harper shot to death outside of his west baltimore home on saturday night after he tried to help his fight durin sa fight. late that last night a man was found in east baltimore with a shot to his head and upper body. so far no arrests have been made. new information this morning in the death of a little girl on the eastern shore. police found the body of 11-year-old sarah. she was taken from her home by legs. legs dated the girl and had custody of her and her two siblings. more than 2,000 volunteers joined in the search for sarah. >> everybody is relieved that she was found. they're not relieved in the way she was found. >> we told her that would come out today and find the area where she was found so we could say a little prayer together for her and her family. >> at this point legs is charged with kidnapping and burglar he re. we are awaiting autopsy results to see how the little girl died. her funeral is being paid for donors. two women, a man and an 11-month-old child ended up in the hospital on december 18th after the cl leak at twin press court. one of the women died this weekend. investigators have not determined what the cause of the leak might have been. last week the baltimore county council passed a law that requires rental units to have carbon monoxide detectors. a hard breaking loss for the baltimore ravens. the team went into pittsburgh with playoff hopes still alive but those hope took a hit after losing a messy game to those steelers. it was a game of penalties. the ravens were flagged 11 times for over 100 yards. one of those caused by willis mcgahee touch down when it was called back after a holding call on kelly washington. it would have given the ravens a 26-20 lead but they kept battling on late in the game. tom makes a key interception and returns it inside, the steeler report, but frank walker was called for illegal contact on that flag, the interception did not count and the ravens go down 23-20. >> it's part of being in this league. it's not the first time that it has happened. we have a mature locker room. we will bounce back like we have all year. we lost more games than we planned on, but one the positive things of losing tough games is to see what we're made off. we know what we're made of. we because we bounce back every time and we will do it again. >> they have a chance to make it the playoffs if they win a game against the oakland raiders, the team will claim a wild card slot. but that won't take the sadness from a lot of fans. joel d smith is live at panera bread with the fans. >> reporter: it this is one of those days when you like to talk to the fans, but not too much, because the wounds gets deep, and hopefully it won't be too much. here is frank cleary always customer number one, come on by and tell us what you think about the game. how long does it take you to get past a game like that? >> as soon as i turn it off, it's over with, move on. >> reporter: we will make you reminisce a little bit longer. when it comes to the game itself, did the steelers earn it or did the ravens give it to them. >> a little bit of both. the ravens give it to them with the turn over and the penalties. but that is football. if they would have played the whole game the way they played the 4th quarter, they would have won. >> reporter: what about the drop off base. >> i felt sorry for him. he played well all of his career. he went to his hand and hit his face. >> reporter: for the future, maybe this game won't matter, because they beat oakland and that will take care of. >> it's in their hands, they beat oakland and they are in the playoffs. >> reporter: maybe next year we will be back. frank is very realistic, he has been here early and he is awake. he doesn't let the game bother him to too much. >> i talk about it and the wounds fester. joel, are you remaining optimistic. >> reporter: yes, it's oakland. oakland is oakland. they have nothing to play, and the ravens have everything to play for so they should take care of business. they got to do it? they got to do it. new numbers show holiday shoppers spent more this season than last year. that is encouraging considering credit is tight and unemployment is in double digits. last year holiday sales were a big bust. this year, retail sales rose 3% from the beginning of the new year to christmas eve. retailers hope that after christmas sales will see another boost. another scare to a northwest flight to detroit. >> he came home and he started -- in chicago. >> later why he was so angry. plus, how u.s. officials knew the christmas day terror suspect was potentially dangerous before this weekend. seasonal temps this monday mo we're coming up by 613 in the morning. if you're headed out west for any reason the western part of our state, you might want to allow a little extra time because take a look at western maryland radar. those are snow showers and he we have a winter weather advisory. there could be a couple of blowing winter snow. this western maryland, not here. we have seasonal temperatures as the system pushed through overnight and it headed over to hagerstown and will head to pa. we will see the remnants which will be more so cold air than anything else. as can you see 40 at the inner harbor. 24 in clarks berg. we have a lot of colder air on the other side of it. tonight 28 for the overnight low, but wind gusts tomorrow morning will feel like single digits out there. we will be having oakland 2 with the windchill. you can see with the numbers are going to change drastically tomorrow. forget about the 50-degree highs we had this weekend. they are history. 43, they will get around there this morning. temperatures are not going to be increasing that much over the next 12 to 18 hours. here is the snow that was the big story in the upper midwest. here in central maryland we're not talking about he snow. we're talking about the colder air that we see on the other side. that is what we see the temperature and the wind gusts. the snow heads up to the northwest or northeast and this other system on the other side with some very cold air this place. be ready as we wind out of '09 into the big 10, we will be having very cold temperatures. cloud radar, no precipitation for the next 46, 48 hours. a system that is not really together down south could bring us a coastal storm, new year eve, into new year's day. 42 degrees with partly cloudy skies, central maryland, ditto on that, maybe a degree cooler, 41. the winds will start switching to the northwest later on tonight. western maryland we have the winter weather advisory, 31 degrees and snow showers throughout the day. speaking of new year's eve, 21 degrees amid the fireworks. there could be white stuff coming from the sky, a mist of rain and snow as we see it right now. the next couple of days, cold will be the weather story. we will barely break the 30s around freezing. with windchills it will be like the single digit tomorrow. dress accordingly thursday into friday, and new year's day that is what we think of snow mix before ending on saturday. we keep you posted right up-to-the-minute. you on fox 45 sky watch weather is at tour finge your finger ti. interactive tools will let you see when rain or snow will be over your house. go to foxbaltimore.com and click on iradar. well, let's see how things are happening out there on this monday afternoo after the holidy weekend. here is candace. >> reporter: same to you, tony. actually it's going to be a pretty good ride on many of the main lines. we're checking on 9550 miles per hour and on 63, traveling on the 395 exit as for 95, near the airport, 66. all in all pretty calm on that stretch. we have trouble to talk about at mount airy this morning, there's a bus fire that completely shuts down all lanes of westbound 70. that is right at route 27. now we don't have any incidents to report on route 144, so you could always stick with that this morning. as for 70 the eastbound lanes taking it from the 29 up toward 695, that is nice and quiet, and here is the beltway right at 70 and you can see once you finally hit eventually that stretch it's going to be calm with the inner and outer loop lanes. right at liberty road, checking on the west side we can show you the outer loop direction. it's getting a good crowd there. there are no brake lights to report. threat the same deal on the inner loop lanes up to 795. once you make the approach through the pikesville region headed toward ris reisterstown . all of those cars are in the green. that's a look at travels, megan, back over to you. thank you, candace. coming up, now that the shopping is over, the christmas returns begin. why you could have to pay more when you return the gift. we all au the person they handcuffed but that is all we saw. >> another scare on the same flight bound for detroit. and how u.s. officials knew the christmas day terror suspect was potentially dangerous before this weekend. shipping! of a growing terror probe. officials say he brought explosives on board the aircraft. we have the latest from the detroit airport. >> reporter: a second scare of a possible bottom on northwest bomb 283, the same flight involved in friday's alleged terrorism attempt. this time concern over nigerian man in his 30s spending more than an hour locked in the bathroom as the plane flew across the united states. crew members became suspicious broke the door down and dragged him down. he then said became irate and verbalbly aggressive. the passenger had apparently fell ill. >> when he came out, he started talking to the -- she called the captain. >> we all saw the person they handcuffed but that is all. >> this is the second leg of my flight. it was a long flight. i just wanted to get off of the plane. >> reporter: the incident comes after an alleged man allegedly failed to bomb the same flight to christmas day. that man's father resently contacted the u.s. embassy in nigerian expressing concern about his son's extremist views. he was placed on a watch list but not on a no flight list. >> the passengers reacted correctly and the crew reacted correctly. >> reporter: he is now in a federal prison 50 miles from he detroit. they want to open an inquiry on the procedures that explosives are detected. >> we want to sharpen our procedures. what is better sued. >> it's amazing to me, that an individual who is sending off so many signals could get on a plane going to the u.s. >> reporter: federal officials say there's no cause for concern over yesterday's flight 253, but the investigation into abdou mulal aph alleged motives will continue. meanwhile authorities have stepped up restrictions. passengers will face longer lines at security checkpoints and have less freedom to move around the plane during their flight. they expect passengers traveling for leasure to put up with the new inconveniences, but they're worried that business travelers might think twice before holiday weekend, but could there be snow on the way. meteorologisty pagnotti is here with all of the answers. i can't believe when you said that, i had no idea this was coming. >> the timing again, it will be new year's eve into new year's day. it's still so far out, it looks like it will be a snow mix. that is the biggest days, that is one of the biggest days of the year when you have plans to go in and ring in the new year. let's take it a day at the time as we do at the weather department of the right now we're not doing too bad. 42 at the inner harbor bud the temperatures will -- but those temperatures will stay there, we do not have much warming because we have a blast of cold air to the west. we have snow showers to western maryland where there's a travel advisory, a winter weather advisory to be more specific. a couple of itche inches of snoh snow and drifting. oakland at 18. that is a hint of what is coming here tomorrow, but not today. we will try to hold on to the temperatures in the 30s and 40 degrees. tomorrow big wind gusts. i will have more on that in a bit, but let's check on the traffic report with the traffic edge. here is candace dold. >> reporter: thank you, tony. we have been monitoring conditions on 70 this morning. there's a bus fire on the westbound lanes completely shutting down all westbound loins at mount airy. the fryer is now out, we're just waiting for a tow truck, but unfortunately that is still blocked there. will you want to use route 144 as an alternate route. once you get past that this, you 70 is going to be on the inbound lanes all the way down to 695. we will show you what is going on at 695 heading on 70. here it is. it's going to be an easy drive on both the outer loop lanes and heading toward the 795 area. 795 toward 95 running normal, a 12 minute clip and running at bower miles per hour. back on the beltway from 83 up to 795, that will take 8 minutes at 54 miles per hour. 55 miles per hour with only an and we also have some snow, believe it or not in the great state of maryland. as you can see over my shoulder the pink out toward oakland and cumberland that, is snow shower activity. we have seeing that on again, and off again throughout the day. it's breaking up before it crosses the mountains and heads up toward the northeast into pennsylvania, but we do in western maryland have the winter weather advisory in effect through the morning hours, some blowing and drifting of the snow that will be on the roadways. as you can see on our hd radar scan right now, there's the weak system that is breaking up. it will move up to the northeast and we will just be sitting on the other side with much colder, drier air and just with temperatures as you can see out west at clarks berg, 24, compared to 34 in hagerstown, and 40 here in baltimore. all of those cold numbers will be headed in our direction. 28 degrees for the overnight low tonight, but winds are going to gust to 35 miles per hour and that will give us a pretty big windchill. these numbers tomorrow, will be sing digits as oakland is right now with a 4-degree windchill. yes, by degrees, actually saturday was too we enjoyed 50s for the weekend but forget about it from here on in. 43, we won't even get there for the next couple of days. today will be our last day of 40 degrees. there's the disturbance i talked about. it moves out of the way, in snow on the forecast, but we are going to see a mix of snow and rain right in time for the new year's eve. on the hd radar, slowdz and clod sunshine throughout the afternoon, here comes the system. as the other side the snow stays well to north with arctic air. the frigid digits that we're talking about will keep us cold over the next couple of days. clouds and sunshine today, giving way to a lot of sunshine tomorrow as high pressure moves in and gives us a decent looking tuesday, wednesday, and thursday we will start to see changes in the forecast. for today, 42 along the eastern shore. here in central maryland 41 we will call it a degree cooler and in western maryland where the travel advisory in effect, 31 degrees amid snow showers. yepy, could be we be seeing white stuff with the fireworks on new year's eve. it could be a mix of rain and snow as we see it. here is the seven-day forecast for you. after today, look at tomorrow, 32, it's going to feel like single digits would expect some activity on the roadways, so far not too bad out there. heading on the west side 13 miles per hour moving through the catonsville region and at 62 traveling through pikesville area. we have a report of a disabled vehicle on the outer loop lanes at bel air road. we don't have any slowing as a result of that. we can show what it looks like on 695 at pulaski highway. here it is, it's going to be a pretty much enjoyable ride on both the inner loop lanes and the outer loop stretch making the push toward 95. on 95, well, that is going to be a bit congested there this morning from 695 heading through that rosedale area down toward the merge. that is where we're seeing a lot of cars that are starting to fill up the lanes, but it's going to open up again, traveling through the fort mchenry tunnel down to 395. the same conditions 395 toward beltway. on 95 moving through howard county, we can show you what it looks like on route 100. it's the volume that we have to deal with this morning, on both the northbound and southbound direction heading toward 95. we do have one incident to talk about in columbia this morning. it's down wires on freeton road at quarter staff i can believe it. yep. new this morning, more information aboutan inigerian man accused of trying to blowup a plane bound for detroit on christmas day. he was on a terror watch list, but not on the no-fly list. he claims to have acted on behalf of al-qaeda. he has been charged with attempting to destroy the flight and for placing a destructive device on that aircraft. homeland security secretary officials believe he acted alone. a very merry christmas for retailers. numbers show that holiday shoppers spent more this year than last year. that is encouraging considering credit is tight and unemployment is still in the double digits. last year's holiday sales were a big bust. this year, retail rose 3.6% from the beginning of november through christmas eve. retailers are hoping that after christmas sales will also see a boost. after a short break for christmas, the house and senate will get back to work this morning hammering out the healthcare reform bill. the senate passed their version of the bill on christmas eve, but now they must combine their 871 billion-dollar bill with the house's version and merging those two bills might not be an easy task. david stewarts, the director of maryland shape ter for americans for prosperity, joins us now live to weigh in. good morning to you. >> as the bill gains momentum, we saw it pass through the house and pass through the sennet. republicans are saying this is a bad bill. americans for prosperity agrees. why are you against this bill. >> it has a tremendous amount of tax increases, a couple of billion dollars of tax increases. it cuts medicare by a few million dollars. it does nothing to reform the healthcare system in this country. the cbo said this may lift premiums and make healthcare more costly for americans. >> their platform is that 30 million americans would be insured that are not eninsured right now. do you believe that? >> i'm not sure. the jury is not out on that one. it's again, cost. >> right. >> and what it's going to cost americans through taxes through mandates and it actually doesn't drive down the cost for those who have insurance policies. >> that cost is a big issue. a lot of those will cost blue-collar democrats from voting for it. >> we are encouraging all of our members to contact their representatives and to let them know to contact leadership in both the house and senate and tell them that we want real reform not what either of these bills are in the current form. >> the next step is the house and senate merging the two versions of the bill. is there a exroom ice compromisu can come up with that you're happy with. >> if they're merging the two bills, no. we again call for real reform, tort reform, allowing individuals more freedom and choice, and purchasing insurance across state lines. for emphasises on plans like health saving account where the health insurance is portable. >> the public option is sure to be a huge issue as we head into compromising again this time around the senate bill does not include it. the house has been passionate about it. would you like to see it in there? >> no, we're opposed to the public option. we're opposed to more government interference in the healthcare industry. anything it happen in the conference committee. they can bring things on either bill to come in. we hope that happens, but probably not likely. >> the conference committee is behind closed doors and that is an issue have? >> that issue is subset, the process in which this entire thing was done. president obama and a lot of liberals campaigned on transparency and allowing the citizens to have a voice in this congress and we didn't see that in this process. it was the opposite and now the conference committee coming up, this whole thing could happen behind closed doors. they could vote in less than 24 hours and citizens have no idea what is in this bill, no way to read it and no way to understand it. >> they're predicting it could be on the president's desk in february. we will wait to see what gets to that desk. the next couple of weeks it will be democrats pitted against democrats. >> they own both the senate and have a super majority in the house. republicans, they're meaning less at this point. their votes will mean nothing. it will be interesting to watch. david schwartz, thank you so much. >> week of the new year brings us quite a few thrillers on dvd. as we turn to 2010, we will start with the new movie and widely phenomenon paranormal activity. this movie will have the fans jumping off their couch. it's the story of a couple who is haunted by a super natural presence in their new home. the actors are also the people behind camera. you will get a real eerie feel for what exactly they're dealing with. this is one of the most profitable films of all time t grossed more than $100 million and was made for about $15,000. pretty amazing for a film that was shot in about one week. our next horror pick is jennifer's body. megan fox stars as a high school beauty, jennifer. she is overtaking by a deny mon and starts praising guys who never had a chance before. while she satisfies her appetite for human flesh. her nerdy friend finds out what is happening and vows to put an end to the blood bath. >> and if those two aren't enough for you, you can check out our 3rd option, the perfect get away. it features newly weds, cliff and cindy who plan to spend their honeymoon backpacking through the beautiful remote beaches of hawaii. they soon hear of a horrifying murder of another newly wed couple. you can watch as the battle of survivor begins when the dvd is released tomorrow. >> if you're just not into the thrillers, then we have an animated film. in the movie 9, a creature named 9 comes to life in a post-op lip tick earth. they hide from a secretariy scae that roams the earth trying to destroy them. 9 realizes that he has to lead a fight against the machine because survival might depend on it. 9 is rated pg13. i see an appropriate response. >> if you're craving an action packed movie, then check out the marine 2. marine recon sniper joe lynwood and his wife take a trip to paradise, but it's quickly shat shattered when guerrilla take control of the resort. a new year means new releases on the big screen. we will give you a preview of what you can expect for the game, mother nature is going to cool you off with really cold temperatures. >> i don't know that we want that, though. >> we have to take the good with the bad. they still have a chance at the playoffs. all is well. but when you see the forecast over next 7 days. you're going to see, all right. 36 degrees at the bwi and 40 at the inner harbor. we're going to stay with the up every 30s and 40s for the daytime highs. don't expect it to be much warmer than it is right now. out in western maryland there's been snow shower activity. there's been a winter wit weathr advisory. we won't get the snow from it. we will get the chilly, chilly arctic type temperatures as early as tomorrow morning. it's 18 in oakland. you can see 20 degrees difference here in baltimore. as we said, expect the upper 30s to around 40 for our daytime high before tonight, the winds will start gusting in, the arctic air comes blasting in tomorrow. what do you say, we blast in our traffic edge report and see what is happening on this monday morning after the holiday weekend, candace. >> reporter: thank you, tony. it's been light activity out there, but now we're starting to see delays on 95, look at south of 695 moving in the rosedale. you can see the reduced speeds on the southbound direction and that persists heading toward the 895 merge. once you finally get past that ahead from the fort mchenry, tunnel, that's normal an 8 minute clip at 4 miles per hour. as far as the beltway, so far so good the outer loop lanes, from 83, an 11 minute clip at 53 miles per hour and only at 54 miles per hour with an 8 minut8-minute drive from 83, to. the west side stretch the usual area that is not exactly good on the commute, not doing too bad this morning, from 795 toward 95, an 11-minute ride at 54 miles per hour. that's a look at the morning travels, megan, back over to you. candace, thank you. 7:03 on fox 45 morning news. police investigate after a deadly weekend in the city of baltimore. three men shot to death in separate crimes. among the victims, a jewelry store owner. police say 56 years old james was found in the back room of his jewelry store on saturday with gunshot wound. it appears nothing was taken from his store and at this point, the motive is unclear. >> it's definite lie ly a mystee are trying to get to the bottom of. >> police found gee-year-old ashley harper shot to death outside of his west baltimore home on saturday night after he tried to help his son during a fight. late last night, another man found in east baltimore with gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. so far no arrests have been made. family members reveal for about inigerian man accused of bringing an explosive on board an international flight on christmas day. the family says that they lost contact with the 23-year-old while he was studying abroad. his father says he reached out to authorities two months ago following the disappearance. he finally learned where his son was. when he heard about the attempted bombing of a northwest air flight headed from amsterdam to detroit, he claimed to have acted on behalf of al-qaeda. >> the threat to the united states is real. i think this admnistration has down played it. they need to recognize it and identify is the only way we're going to defeat it? >> he was on a terror watch list but not on the no fly list. he is being charged with attempting to destroy the flight and for placing a destructive device on that aircraft. homeland security secretary officials believe that he acted alone. meanwhile federal authorities have stepped up security restrictions on all u.s. airports. passengers will face longer lines at security checkpoints and have less freedom to move around the plane during their flight. airlines expect passengers traveling for leasure to put up with the new inconveniences, but they're worried about the business travelers who might be thinking twice before flying if the new measures mean extra [ drill whirring ] thank you. excuse me, sir! can you tell me which coffee tastes better? and makes a great jump and the steeler drive continues. later in the drive, roethlisberger, quick, takes it 24 yards for the touch down, giving the steelers at 20-10 lead at the half. here comes the ravens, 16 yards in the first down, rice ran for 141 yards on the day. the first to crack the century mark against pittsburgh in 32 games. later in the drive, flacco throws it up for heat, again he foxes out the defender and makes a nice leap, 7th touch down for the game, 6th of the season, and 4th of the last two weeks. ravens down 20-17 and 7 seconds later. roethlisberger rolls out and looking for halls, dominique fox worth makes a great play for the interception. and returns it 45 yards for the touch down. terrell suggs called for an illegal blocking on the 3rd negating and the block. there's the block in the back. the ravens settle for a kind of field goal to tie the game at 20. and then later in the 3rd, willis mcgahee gets to carry, gets around the left end and takes off. 32 yards for the touch down, giving the raven the lead but wait ke kelly washington. washington just latching on the to the shoulder pads. towson, doesn't let know, another penalty erasing the touch interception. finally tack alda tackled at the ravens are in business. but they called a pass. john harbaugh, can't believe it. the team's penalties might have cost him a playoff. the steelers beat the ravens at 23-20 at a disappointing loss. afterwards most the talk was about the penalties. >> i think can you go to penalties if you want. you can put your finger on whatever you want. we play hard every single week. the specific penalties we want to talk about. you want to talk about the eel e illegal contact, late in the game, check what the rules say. >> one of the things you do when you play a football team like this. you can't have the penalties and you can't let them get back in the game. >> we have a chance to win the game, you know, we can't complain about what the refs do, what they don't do. we have a job to do, and they have a job to do. it's clear cut we didn't get the job done. when all of that is said and done, we have oakland next week and still have a chance to make the playoffs. >> it doesn't help you, but i didn't see the penalties. >> it sure didn't help today some of the cases, we have the good teams on the road, we can't afford to do that. that's a tough match. >> the penalties in critical times. so, again it hurt us as a team it's an offense, defense, whatever phase of the game, but you know, those are just something that you have to deal with. >> it doesn't feel good. it's part of being in this league. it's not the first time it's happened. we have a mature locker room. we will bounce back from this. we lost more games than we planned on. one of the positive things of losing and losing tough games, you get to see what you're made off before you get in the playoffs is hopefully where we will be. we know what we're made off. we bounce back every time and we will do it again. >> the steelers keep their hopes alive with a 23-20 win. flacco had two touchdowns and an interception. ray rice ran for 41 yards becoming the first 1 to run 100 yards on the steelers defense. the stat of the game, the ravens penalize, 11 times for 113 yards negating two touchdowns. they will wrap up the regular season next sunday in oakland against the be categorized. that is according to the office ththe state medical examiner. he reports 800 statewide. that tally ranks maryland as the number one state in the union for classifying deaths as unclassified. stephen janice with investigative joyce joins us this morning. good morning, stephen. >> good morning. >> my question to you is what happens to those? we are talking about hundreds of people ? >> what is interested about it is ones those deaths are marked undetermined it sends the statistics to a categorical limbo. a lot of deaths is people who were intoxicated at the time of death. there's very little to investigate. >> do they ever revisit those cases. is there ever a time when they will go back? >> they say, they would, but i have never seen a case that was undetermined that was later opened. you have the case like rivera who jumped off of the building of a hotel that remained undetermined for four years. there's a lot of cases where you think they may look at them. i haven't seen anything since i have been reporting on this issue. >> a concerning thing that you found is these cases are rising statewide. what is the medical examiner saying about this if anything? , what is interesting it. like i said a lot of things are contributed. they have a second category for drug related. they have a lot of people that are drug related and they don't know how the drutionz go drugs e system. you got melinda conaway calling for a hearing at the city council because it leaves a huge category of unanswered questions. it leaves a category where you have deaths that could have been foul play that you would never know. we talk about the homicide and murder rate. do you think that we could be more dangerous than what is being reported with those unclassified? >> given the statistics of having 300 in the year, and being the highest in the nation. there could be cases that could slip through the cracks that could be homicides, and people that died under foul shore. police found the body of 11-year-old sarah haley fox well on christmas day. police say the girl was taken from her bedroom in salisbury last tuesday night by registered thomas legs dated the aunt who had custody of her and two siblings. more than 2000 joined in the search for sarah. >> everybody is relieved she was found but not relieved the way she was found. >> i told her we would come out here today and look for the area where she was found so we could just say a little prayer together for her and for the family. >> at this point legs is charged with kidnapping and burglary. we're still waiting on results to see how the little girl died. her funeral is being paid by an an nanonymous donor. one of people who suffered carbon monoxide poisoning has died. two, a man and an 11-month-old child ended up in the hospital after the co leak. one the women died this weekend. investigators have not yet determined the coughs that leak. last week the baltimore county council a game of penalties. the ravens were flagged 11 times for 100 yards. one of those caused a willis mcgahee touch down to be called back, a holding call on kelly washington. that would have given the ravens a 26-20 lead there, but they kept battling on. late in the game, tom makes a key interception. take a look at it as he returns it into steelers territory, but frank walker was called for illegal contact on the play. the interception did not count and the ravens go down 23-20. >> it's not the first time it's happened. we have a mature locker room. i think we will bounce back from this crime now. kyle, what do you think? is all of this crying overrated. that is what i thought. the crying should be done. the hands come out of the mouth and it's over. this fan is not crying. he is very realistic. did the ravens give it away or do the steelers take it or both. >> i think they took it. the penalties and it keeps happening and happening. they're pushing people out of bounce when they're already there and blocking in the back. they're sel self self destructi. we love derrick mason but that can't happen. >> those things are going to happen. he is a reliable play, great player and great attitude. i don't blame derrick mason. that is a physical thing, but the other things are mental and that is when they shoot themselves in the foot that is what kills them 110 yards. >> air that will be in place for the next several days. you will need the winter jacket. if you got one fore for the hol, you will be using it. the sunshine stays with us for the next couple of days as high pressure builds in thursday through wednesday before a disturbance gets through here on wednesday new year's eve. partly cloudy on the eastern shore and in central maryland we will call around the same 41 degrees and out west, maryland way, only -- not even breaking freezing with the windchills of 31 and snow showers. yepy, new year's eve, rain and snow and a wintery mess to say goodbye to '09 and hello to '10. the windchills in the 20s and thursday into friday new year's eve into new year's day. we could have a wintery mix in the first weekend of 2010 a very chilly one. all in all, take a big jacket with you tomorrow and maybe you will have to take a little bit of i a heater. for today we will see how the roads are doing in our traffic edge report. here is candace dold. >> reporter: i cannot believe we're talking about 2010, wow! if you're heading out and hitting the roadways the numbers are up on the belt lane moving at security boulevard area, 63 miles per hour. 63 moving through the pikesville region and 51 on the jfx, but then take a look at this number, 24 miles per hour on 95 moving right through whitemarsh. and here is what is happening. we finally cleared out an accident. it was on the southbound lanes of 95 at the 895 merge. unfortunately, though, it just really left us with the delays moving through the whitemarsh region heading up toward the activity. just one shot for the residual delays that are still there. to need to take an alternate route. once you get past all of that mess and head from the fort mchenry and toward the 695 exit, we are incident free in the cars in the green both 95 and 895. on 95, from 395, down toward 695, so far it's a pretty calm ride heading toward the beltway on the southbound end. and then 695 moving through catonsville. well, it's roushl usually a dift ride. 695 at route 40 is going to be relatively calm. that is going to be heading up toward 70 but on 70, there is some trouble, though. there's a bus fire it takes out one lane of westbound 70 at route 27 moving through the mount airy area. will you want to use route 144 as an alternate. megan, back over to you. an attempted terrorist attack the collar about the loss, we will chill them down. it's going to be the best day as far as temperature wise for the rest of the week. we are going to see '09 go out the week. one last day of decent temperatures. temperatures you have out there this morning, are going to be what we're having this afternoon. we're at 38 degrees at the inner harbor right now, 37 at bwi. look out toward oakland, western maryland, yes, it's been snowing. they have had single digit windchills and we're going to be seeing that cold arctic blast in here as early as tomorrow. watch the winds later on gusting out of the northwest. we're in the upper 30s around 40. we will stay there throughout the afternoon before topping out at 37 degrees and then tonight comes the big chill. we will have more on the big chill in just a minute, but how about some big traffic news as we have this monday after the holidays, the last monday of '09 and here is candace dold. >> reporter: can't believe we are talking about the those numbers, 2010. if you're heading out and hitting roadways, we want to tell you what it looks like out there. here it is 695 at harford road. the usual slow go, look at the cars zipping long along the outer loop lanes and the inner loop direction. the outer loop lanes from 95 toward 83, it's running normal right there. we're looking at an 11 minute clip at 55 miles per hour. so that is at least some good news. how does the rest of the roadways look, not bad from 795 toward 95, it will only take 11 minutes, 54 miles per hour and 55 miles per hour with an 8 minute clip on southbound 95 from the fort mchenry tunnel heading toward the beltway. if you're going to opt for 895 instead traveling through the city, the harbor tunnel toward 95, a 5-minute drive at 54 miles per hour. that's a look at the morning travels, megan, back over to you. candace, thank you. 8:04 on fox 45 morning news. police investigate a deadly weekend right here in the city of baltimore. three men shot to death in separate crimes. now among the victims, a jewelry store owner. police say 56 years old wayne rodder was found in the back room of his northwest baltimore store on saturday with gunshot wound. police say it appears that nothing was taken from his store and at this point the motive is unclear. >> definitely a mystery we're trying to get to the bottom of. >> no one comes hereafter dusk or dark. police also found ashley harper shot to death outside of his west baltimore home on saturday night after he allegedly tried to help his son during a fight. late last night another man found in east baltimore with gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. so far no arrests have been made new information this morning in the death of a little girl on the eastern shore. police found the body of 11-year-old air is ay11-year-ol. legs reportedly dated the girl's aunt who had custody of her and her two siblings. more than 3,000 volunteers joined in the search for sarah. >> everybody is releefd that sht she was found but they're not relieved on the way she was found. >> i told her we would come out here today and look for the area where she was found so we could say a little prayer for her and for the family. >> at this point legs is charges charged with kidnapping and burglary. her funeral is being paid by an anonymous donor. the family of the suspect says they lost contact with the 23-year-old while he was studying abroad. his father says he reached out to authorities two months ago following the disappearance. he finally learned where his son was when he learned about the attempted bombing of a northwest airline flight headed from amsterdam to detroit. the suspect claimed to have acted on behalf of al-qaeda. >> this admnistration has down played it. they need to recognize it and identify it and it's the only way we're going to defeat it. >> the suspect was on a watch list but not a no pl no fly lis. homeland security oastles believofficialsbelieve he acted. airline officials questioned other passengers flying on sunday who say they displayed suspicious behavior. one involved a nigerian businessman traveling on the same northwest flight from amsterdam to detroit where the terror attack was attempted two days earlier. the man refused to leave the bathroom as the plane was landing but it turns out he was sick. passengers on a u.s. air flight from arlon d orlando to phoenix, reported two men acting suspiciously. a search of their bags didn't turn up anything, and the men were allowed to continue to california. meanwhile they have put restrictions. passengers will face longer lines at security checkpoints and have less freedom to move around the plane during their flights. they expect the travelers trailing for leasure to put up with these new inconveniences but they're worried that business travelers might think twice if these new measures mean more time at the airport. a heartbreaking loss for the ravens. the team went into pittsburgh with playoff hopes still alive but the hope took a hit after losing a messy game to the steelers. it was tiewly a game of -- trule loss to penalties. you can see it there, it was a holding call on kelly washington. it would have given the ravens a 26-20 lead, but they kept battling on. late in the game, tom makes this key interception. look at him run it back there inside steelers territory, but frank walker was called for an illegal contact on that play. that interception did not count and the ravens go down 23-20. now even with -- >> we have a mature locker room. i think we will bounce back from this like we have been doing all year. we lost more games than we planned on, but one of the positive things about losing and losing tough games is you get to see what you're made off before you get into the playoffs. we know what we are made off because we bounce back every time and we're going to do that again. >> even with the loss the ravens still have a chance to make the playoffs if they win the game on sunday against the oakland ravens. the team will claim the wild spot but that won't wash out the bad taste of this loss for many ravens fans. joel d smith is live at towson. when windchill in baltimore, it's going to feel like 35 throughout the day. we hit 50 for the high. well above normal, 43 is where we should be for this last week of december. on the big picture, we're watching a storm system that really hasn't developed yet. it's going to be coming from the south coastal storm along with the cold air that we're talking about could make for fireworks for new year's eve for mother nature. we will take that a day at a time. as we see today, sunshine partly cloudy skies. the storm system on the other side of it, it's the cold arctic air. snno snow up to pennsylvania and peaks high in the sunshine. clouds filtering through the afternoon but no precipitation in the forecast. speaking of which, here is the eastern shore, forecast, 42 degrees, winds gusting this afternoon up to 20 miles per hour. and here in central maryland, there could be, again a flake or two, some flurries here and there but not everywhere. 41 degrees, 20-mile per hour wind that is too honest and not even entertaining. i have never written a book. people mighting interested in that time and what the struggle was at that time and/or even at this moment. it makes it scary. it's still just an autobiography. it's my life and my experiences some of which are dark and some of which are filled with terror and it's what i cope with each and every waking moment of my life and my career. >> you know what, some people might not know that it's as pervasive throughout your life. some people might think, howie might not like to shake hands with people. >> they don't know that it's much more than that. if they read the book they will know that. you see me talking about being a germ phobic. the truth is it's he very real and i work real hard on it. i go to therapy and i'm have been talking about western maryland and the snow, snow showers there this morning. we have been seeing the snow on again off again. what is happening is it's been breaking up as it moves across the mountains. we may be at best at some locations see a snow flake or two here in central maryland. the biggest story will be the cold air behind the frontal boundary. a winter weather advisory in effect through this afternoon. we're having the blowing and drifting of some of the snow showers on the ground with the winds gust up to 25-30 miles per hour. hd radar shows the clear scan here in central maryland. the hagerstown gets the shower activity and then we will be heading toward pennsylvania. out west these numbers, big difference, 24 on clarksberg, 37 in baltimore and we will be seeing the colder air and windchills, too, to boot tomorrow and as early as this evening. the windchills gusting up to 35 miles per hour with an overnight low of 28 degrees. it's only 3 windchill wise in oakland this morning. we will be seeing the windchills in the single digits here in central maryland tomorrow. yesterday how about a by degrees-- bydegrees, 50 degrees, a decent day. we're not going to get there, barely 40 degrees for the daytime high. the storm tim, t system to the southwest working its way to the southeast, moisture coming up the coast. you heard this, cold air in place. the arctic air put the two together and we have an interesting forecast for the new year's eve. hd radar shows that we will be precipitation free. here is the storm system that brought some of the snow this morning and bringing snow to western maryland. there is the frontal boundary. we think that is what is going to be the weather maker on new year's eve. high pressure the next couple of days keeps us with sunshine, nice day today, enjoy it. it's going to be the best of the rest of the week as far as temperature wise as we see the seven-day forecast in a bit. we will be calling it partly cloudy with a deal of sunshine before the clouds start to thicken up on the sig sky watch forecast. the winds picking up later this afternoon around central maryland around 41. again we're not going the jfx. as for incidents, we do have one problem to talk about in you on ward county this morning. it's a crash on the westbound lanes at route 100 that is right at 95. can you see all of the cars in the green moving throughout the region, so no problems to complain about as far as the actual delays are concerned. on 95, that traffic is flowing freely, moving through the howard county area, heading toward the beltway and making the push toward the fort mchenry tunnel. it was a bit congested earlier but now things have cleared out on the 95 area moving through rosedale. those cars are now in the green. as for 695 on the top end, we can show you what it looks like on pulaski highway. it's very light activity on the inner loop lanes and the outer loop stretch on 95. just farther up on 695 at harford road, the usual slow go. take a look at that, just the slow crowd at the inner and outer loop lanes but no brake lights in either direction. that's a look at the morning travels, megan,
