That bag in just a second. The police had good reason to be concerned. It was actually wedged up against the drivers side door. The result was a call to police, and much of civic center shut down for about an hour. Look carefully at this San Francisco police car. Underneath it, propped up against the drivers side door is a bag. A leather bag. A suspicious sight, say police, especially given current events. Cue to all the recent attacks on Law Enforcement across the nation and in canada, we talk precaution to make sure the officer was safe, as our officers. Reporter a Homeland Security Police Officer spotted the officer and called police. The bomb squad arrived, and a robot was sent in to inspect the bag. Nose in city hall were ordered to shelter in place. It was quickly determined the bag was no threat. Carried back inside, closed belonging to a homeless man and a computer. Police also found the man who put the bag there. It was a Good Samaritan who made a bad choice. The gentleman told us that he found the package, and thought it best that he turn it into Law Enforcement as a lost and found property. Because he was late to attend the opera, he left it propped up next to the police car, which was unattended. Reporter police say the man was turning in lost property, so he will not face consequences, but they say in the future, when people find lost property to give them a call. Their officers will pick it up in person. In San Francisco, ken pritchett, ktvu, channel 2 news. More developing news tonight. This time in the east bay, where police is have arrested a man suspected of attacking an 89yearold woman, and stealing her car. An Oakland Police captain confirms, officers arrested Terrance Hardy in east oakland without incident at 7 45 tonight. Hes wanted for punching the elderly woman in the face, and then driving off with her car. This Surveillance Video shows the white toyota leaving a parking lot of a cvs store moments after the attack. Hardy is also believed to be the man who threatened or assaulted several officers in oakland. The library tells ktvu, there have been three incidents since march. New developments tonight in a Sexual Assault case involving two students at stanford university. Last week, we showed you a rally in support of lea sharon francis. Who says she was assaulted by a student. Now stanford says it will withhold his degree for two years. He also wont be allowed to enroll in a graduate program until 2016. New information tonight about yesterdays deadly shooting at a high school in a suburb of portland, oregon. Today the victim was identified as 14yearold emilio hoffman. He was a freshman at Reynolds High School in trout dale. His family released a statement saying he was a fun loving boy. The shooter is identified as Jared Michael padgett. Also, a freshman at the high school. Padgett killed hoffman, and wounded a teacher before killing himself. He had two guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. The shooter used an ar15 type rifle in the attack and carried, but did not use a semi automatic handgun. Reporter police say the teen was able to get ahold of the guns from his home, even though they were in a secure location. At this point, a motive for the attack is still unclear. A shooting in berkely injured two people late this afternoon, news chopper 2 was over the scene during our 5 00 news. Police say gunshots were reported at about 4 30 near russell, and california streets. When officers arrived, they found a 21yearold man, and an 18yearold man suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital, and are expected to survive. Police say theyre still looking for the gunman. A u. S. Magistrate in San Francisco denied bail today to raymond, shrimp boy, chow. He is accused of Money Laundering in a case that has also ensnared a state senator. Why chow supporters say theres a double standard here. Reporter hes been in federal custody since april, and today, a u. S. Magistrate said Raymond Shrimp Boy Chow should remain jailed, because he poses a danger to the community. He has reformed himself and the government doesnt accept it. Reporter chow faces charges that include Money Laundering and conspiracy to illegally sell alcohol and tobacco. I just think that hes not getting a fair chance. Reporter at to thes bail hearing, a racially Diverse Group of chows friends testified he posed no threat to the community and did much to help troubled young people. I think hes made a positive influence. He cant base his past, 10 years ago, plus on who he is now. Reporter the federal magistrate disagrees, saying quote, there is more than complete evidence that he would pose a risk to the community. They said theyll appeal the bail ruling and questioned why yee was granted bail. He got out on a 500,000 bond . Its not fair, and it doesnt make any sense. His lawyers say they would have to clear up an immigration and Customs Enforcement hold before hes allowed to walk the streets again. The former b. A. R. T. Police officer accused of manslaughter in the shooting death of oscar grant was back in a bay area courtroom today. The case is being heard at the federal courthouse. Johannes mehserle is sued by oscar grants father, who claims the shooting was intentional. Oscar grants father has been in prison for murder but his Attorney Says that doesnt matter. Under the 14th amendment, he has a right to collect damages for someone denying him of a familial relationship. He intended to use his taser but mistakenly fired his gun. In court he said he disagreed with the previous guilty verdict. The fbi has opened a criminal investigation of the Veterans Affairs department. It comes in the wake of a still unfolding scandal at the va, in which many veterans were forced to wait for medical appointments. At least 23 veterans died while waiting to see a doctor, and its alleged paperwork was denied to make the wait look shorter. A teenage girl was badly injured today when she was hit by a car in hayward. It happened about 6 00 this evening at d street and watkins street. Not far from mission boulevard. Police say the 16yearold girl suffered a fractured skull, and also has bleeding on the brain, but she is expected to survive. The driver involved in the accident did remain on the scene, and was arrested for not having a license. The truck drive whoever was charged in the crash that injured comedian tracy morgan pleaded not guilty today. Kevin roper made his First Court Appearance since saturdays crash on the new jersey turnpike. Authorities say he had been awake for more than 24 hours when the walmart truck plowed into the limo bus carrying morgan and others. Morgan remains in critical, but stable condition tonight. Morgans friend, comedian james mcnair was killed in the crash and two other people were hurt. A special owner is coming honor is coming for the young girl from oakland who was declared brain dead. The girls familiar had asked to recognize that jahi had completed most of the work and deserved a diploma. Its really difficult for me to try to guess about the difference a few minutes would make. Reporter the Fire Departments medical director points out firefighters arrived on scene in two and a half minutes and determined casen needed to get to the hospital. Whether or not it would have made a difference, i think based on that information, in this particular case it probably would not have. It was a battle of words. Choosing the junior rotc program was not my parents choice, or my teachers choice. It was my choice. As the youth of the 21st century. I want an upto date knowledge of the basic information. My son is not interested in joining the military. That is not what this is about. He would like to expand his knowledge. Reporter others call the program a military recruitment tool, and waste of limited district funds. If thats where were at that the only option for teaching our kids is this, then we should all just go home. Conflict resolution. Those are the kinds of programs we need. But we dont need nobody coming in, talking about no more guns. Why should the military be embedded in the high school with Public School funds . Reporter the controversy is not new in the bay area. Unlike other junior rotc programs, this was whether to allocate 100,000 a year for two years to start the program at de anza high school. The program would include instructions on topics, such as aviation history, and space exploration. Students would get pe and elective credit. A retired air force major would teach the course, which many said was needed to keep youth out of trouble.
