>> player: good starting pitching and good bullpen. >> ken: how about yourself? >> player: i'm just going up there, try to relax and stay calm. try to make something happen. today, i hit a pretty good pitch as far as pitcher's pitch. and, you know, got enough wood on it to get it down the line. the at-bat before with burrell taking the walk, really set the stage for us. >> ken: bruce bochy made some pretty significant line-up changes today. edgar renteria lead off, you hit fifth. how much did the changes help? >> player: that's the thing about our team. i mean, everyone is contributing. one through nine and the bench guys. it's just been an unbelievable experience. it doesn't matter where anybody hits. we're all on the same page. we have one thing in mind, that's to win. that's the reason we're here right now. >> ken: matt cain, brilliant day. what did you see from him that maybe you haven't seen before? >> he was outstanding. one thing he had to overcome is the mental hurdle where he struggled against the philadelphia phillies. specifically, chase utley and jimmy rollins. his first at-bat in the third inning with chase utley coming up with runners on. are you going to get him? he does. that is hurdle number one. then jimmy rollins. first and second again. gets out of that. that is twice. feeling real good now. then thinking this is my day, chase utley with a runner on second base. matt cain was superb. >> mitch: if i look at this from a philadelphia phillies pitching standpoint i look at one thing: cody ross. he is not the guy they were looking at as don't let this guy beat you. cody ross has driven in four of the eight runs in the series. the phillies pitchers have to come up with a plan to get him out. >> chris: the big question is who will be on the mound in game four for the philadelphia phillies? we will give you the pitching probables in a minute. but first, the winner today in game three for the san francisco giants, of course, is matt cain. he is standing by with our ken rosenthal. >> ken: how much did it raise the tension for you, knowing that there would be very little margin for error? >> player: you knew that coming in the whole series. cole hit the ball great. lights out against cincinnati. i was just trying to go out there and keep matching him. the guys got on base and we were able to get a few guys over. a few guys in. it worked out right, we were able to keep putting up the zeros. >> ken: two on, two out in the seventh. bruce bochy comes to the mound. 113 pitches. what did you tell him? >> player: he asked if i was all right and how i'm doing and i said i'm good. he said, "hey, i have confidence in you. get the job done." we were able to get victorino to hit a ground ball that we needed. >> ken: you're up 2-1 in the series. two games away from the world series. are you starting to feel it? >> player: yeah, but you know, we've, we got to enjoy today. come back out tomorrow. get the job done. you can't just really get ahead of yourself. >> ken: the crowd was vocal today, emotional. what did you think? >> eric: the big thing he was able to do today, his change-up was an outstanding pitch form. he would get ahead with the fastball and then he'd throw the split finger and freddy sanchez at second base like to wore his glove out on ground-out to second. >> and matt cain is not the sexy pick of the three. you have lincecum, sanchez, but matt cain has been the force all year long. he did this every month, dominant all year long, consistent all year long. great today. >> chris: way to dodge the bandana out there and the rally towels and everything. as far as game four goes, giants will go with their 21-year-old left-hander madison bumgarner. he is the scheduled starter. the big question is will joe blanton be on the hill for the phillies? >> you said that -- [ indiscernible ] >> the emotional spectrum there, hearing from the phillies manager. we'll be right back as we're celebrating a big win by the giants. we have tms inside, outside and the locker room. our giants play-off fever continues after a short break. >> we are continuing to monitor the podium at at&t and in the locker room and we'll get back to the giants in just a couple of minutes. first, though, i want to get to some of the day's other stories making news. the san bruno disaster was at the center of a hearing in sacramento today as lawmakers look for ways to improve pipeline safety in california. the state senators heard testimony from san bruno's mayor. the state regulators and pg&e. there was also an emotional plea from the mother of jessica morales, the 20-year-old woman who was killed in last month's explosion. >> i hope each one of you guys will consider this to the deepest of your hearts and understand that this for me is a huge loss and i can only hope and pray that we will continue to find the right answers to make this right. >> today's special hearing was held by the senate public safety committee and the energy utilities and communications committee. five san bruno families took legal action feeling individual lawsuits against pg&e. the lawsuits accuse the company of negligence and are seeking compensation. the plaintiffs want pg&e to remove the gas line to thatriggered the explosion and fire as this is happening, pg&e is offering a buyout to san bruno residents whose homes were destroyed or seriously damaged. it's part of a plan designed to give home owners options as they make decisions on whether to rebuild or move out. >> why would i rebuild in an area that has the same pipe running through it, i don't care if they change it. the fact of the matter is that it's tempting fate. >> and more than 30 individual lawsuits are expected to be filed the coming weeks. residents have been working to file class-action lawsuits stemming from that disaster. now to the east where detectives are searching the hills east of fremont for more human remains related to the discovery of bones over the weekend. it's happening at a location south of moreson road. police say that is a mile from a more populated area. -- on sunday, the police say they appear to have been there for two years. it's a quote to everyone there but for residents. and coming up here, more coverage from today's giants huge win and look at that, ate park has cleared out, all 40,000 or so fans on the streets celebrating, a big victory for the giants, up two games to 1 against the phillies. back with more after. this >> good afternoon, everyone. i'm frank summerville. >> welcome to a special early edition of ktvu channel 2 news at 5. the san francisco giants fans are celebrating a big win. we go to pitcher matt cain. >> halladay, oswalt hammels coming into the series. did you feel any bit sleighted at all knowing how well you and the staff pecked over the last six weeks? >> no, we knew this was going to be -- and still feel like it's going to be a close matchup. every day we go out there and pitch against the guys, you know, we're just taking that, you know, one game and we'll come out there tomorrow and do the same thing. >> and straighten them back? >> somebody's been here longer than anyone else. at what point did you start thinking the team had a chance to be, maybe what they're doing now? we felt confident with ourselves in the spring. we had a great spring and came out of spring hot and, you know, we felt if we hit a bump in the road, i think that is when -- when we started hitting the bumps in the road, i think that is when we, you know, started noticing that we were a team that was going to do things right for the season. >> and to the right? >> along the same lines with the phillies rotation, this is seven quality starts in a row for you guys. do you think that you sort of made a point and was that -- do you have that sort of in mind coming into the post season? >> we, that is our goal to go out there is come, you know, every time. all of us, the rotation want to go out there and stay in the game as long as possible. and our biggest thing is to stay in the game 7th to 8th inning and to try to get the win and to -- where you stick around to get the extra wins. >> and last one for matt. >> charlie emmanuel said in the past when you piped against the phillies, you often got too aggressive with the fastball and you avoided that today. when you were looking back on past starts against themselves them and getting ready today, was that a conscious decision to get away from that? >> not really. i'm a guy who is going to throw a lot of fastballs. the biggest thing is making sure the location was better than in the previous times, you know, i think that is really the main goal today was to go out there and try to keep the ball closer to the knees and stay at the bottom of the strike zone. >> okay, thank you, matt. >> thanks. >> what a game by giants pitcher. tim linsicum was incredible in game 1. some might say matt cape was -- matt cain was good if not better and back inside at&t park to our sports director mark ibanez. hey, mark. >> reporter: hey, frank. you know, i'll tell you one of the incredible side stories to the giants success, particularly in the post season is the continued ability of their manager bruce bocchi to push all the right buttons. andre is slumping badly in the post season, mike fon10 on the -- fontenot and makes a couple of changes and puts renteria in short stop and both came through. it was renteria who broke up hammels, no-hit weather base hit and the 2-run rally started and rowen led off the following inning, the fifth with a double down the left-field line and scored when sanchez's grounder was booted by chase utley and bruce bocchi making a couple of lineup switches and couldn't have worked out in this 3-0 win and we have joe fonzie in the clubhouse now and the atmosphere a few minutes ago, is upbeat and giants are playing with confidence and they were able to shake off any loss and they didn't look like the same team here today and met in the most positive way as they completely shut down that extremely potent philadelphia lineup, top to bottom. brian wilsons in and claims the save and cane doing the chores. a brilliant performance by the giants pitching staff and two more wins and they go to the world series against the yanks and texas rangers. for right now, i'm mark ibanez live at@and a very happy group of giants fans and hoping to catch a glimpse of their heros and that is a nice story here right now. >> yeah. >> and how great would that be to clench at at&t park on thursday? >> that would be fantastic and they did clench here. you remember in 2002 against the st. louis cardinals, kenny lofton with the game-winning win then, the giants will need two games consecutively to pull that off. both are night games and if not, they would have to get it done in philadelphia if at all. the fans are hoping it's a home deal and we're getting ahead of ourselves. the post season victories, every one of them, are hard fought to say the least, frank. they got it done efficiently today and on an economy of hitting and beautiful pitching. i think a couple of wins would be good and conditions exactly like at the ball park. and this is our chief meteorologist bill martin with more on the weather tomorrow possibly. >> reporter: did you see that shot of our town? i think we have fog coming in now at the coast and light go outside. at&t, they built it over there and that was the perfect spot to build it. you see spots now and you see it there. much warmer than the wet side and than candle stick. tomorrow, looks like mostly sunny again and fog in sauce leado and -- sausalito. number 4, forecast at the start of the game about 63 degrees and scattered clouds. the clouds move in the next few days and with thatup signatured weather. there is a shot of rain this weekend. >> see you in a bit. and i want to take you back inside at&t park on the podium and might be the starting pitcher for the philadelphia phillies. >> and he didn't go for them and that shows the patience he has. you move on to the next hitter and especially because it didn't hurt me in a way where i walked in a run and put two guys in second on scoring position and, you know, that is one of those things where you get to the next guy. >> you have been pitching not only better than all season but some people say better than you ever have, your velocity is up and what do you attribute this? just working out and keeping -- getting them in better physical condition and, obviously, you know, mentally preparing for games better and making pipes. you have to make pitches when you can. when you're not able to make them, you hurt and you have to be able is to toexecute pitches down the way, unfortunately and -- to have them work. >> to the left again? >> renteria's hit, looked look a descent pitch and good at-bat and aside from that, the approach, they seem to be pretty smart. the veteran guys with a good at- bat. >> they do and that is with that pitch it want -- i wanted, i didn't think he could catch it in. he was not able to catch up to that, but, you, do you try to make that pep and sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't and i think i would not have changed a pecking sequence to him. unfortunately, that is baseball and he was able to feet off the pipend get it into the outfield. >> listening -- their starting pitcher. we'll take you back at home outside, at&t park in san francisco, awash in orange and black. a lot of people are still celebrating. we're continuing the giants play-off fever next. >> still a lot of excitement outside of at&t park. a lot of fans on the scene still and taking in a game 3 victory, a 3-0 victory for the san francisco giants, putting them up 2 games to 1 in the best-of-7 series against the philadelphia phillies and we go live outside of ate park and mike. >> what a oil day for the ballpark. the giants are back in town and as you said, victorious on the nlcsgam 3. the crowd, 42,000- plus, starting to then out and this group to my left is waiting for giants players, some fans are still hanging out and not waiting for them as they make their way to the ballpark. >> you're blowing the whistle, talk to me about the game and stuff. the atmosphere? -- usual? you feel you're able to hit any pitch anywhere? how is it different? >> i don't recall the last time i felt as good as i do. i tempered with stuff, you know, in the cage and this and that and for the most part, it's about confidence and going up there and knowing you're going to get the job done and something. and if you go up there and have something else, chances are you're not going to get anything done. i think the most part is going up there with that thought process you that know you're going to do it in that particular moment. >> and -- with this man on the mound what, does that mean for the first run? >> this guy is incredible to do what he did and against their lineup. got himself in a couple of jams and worked his way out of it. that is what you want off of a split. you agite gulike cane who has no fear to do what he did and he's amazing as well and he was hitting the spots and throwing well and we got lucky and scored a couple of runs early and matt held him for the remainder and in -- our bullpen came in and did an outstanding job. [ indiscernible ] >> a lot of phily players stated over and over this is what they expect with you and glad you're not with the marlins anymore. does this attribute to you being so calm and confident because you know what to expect? >> i think so. it's nice to play against a team you have played against for years. the braves and these guys and gives you a sense of comfort knowing you have faced them in the past and you're not going up there blind, per say and i am trying to help the guys out as much as i can with the scouting reports or tendencies that pitchers have and it's nice to be in that situation. >> and -- you said that most guys can't get that ball up over the 3rd baseman's head. the phrase was like normal guys don't hit. and do you feel not normal right now? what is it like to file the way you feel? >> and to be honest with you, there is no feeling. you have no feeling. you try to do your job and he's right. it was probably a pipe that i shouldn't have swung at. it was down and away and somehow, i hooked it down the line and that is what when happens when you're swinging the ball well and that goes back to the confidence saying you know you're going to get the job done and he was really good today, good as i have seen him in a long time [ indiscernible ] >> no. you don't have that long to think about it. [ indiscernible ] >> when you came here and it was a straight waiver claim and didn't treat anyone before you, what does that -- what do you think of that when your team lets you go and you get nothing in return? >> i don't want to dwell on it. it's not a good feeling. my emotions were so high at that point, started off sad that i was leaving my buddies there and realizing where was coming and the opportunity that was going to have to get a chance to get to the post season and tearing that -- and they gave away for nothing and bygones be bygone. i'm in a better place. >> in the back. >> and do you still want to be a rodeo clown?
