Potentially even dangerous material is burning and burning hard. But now i did just talk to the fire captain and he said they seem to be getting a good handle on it. Thats why youre seeing if you have the live pictures from the chopper now, thats why youre seeing the lighter colored smoke. So the good news is that i asked if they had any injuries and no one has been injured, either firefighters or anybody else. That is good news indeed. Were going to be here for a while and try to get a live shot so we can bring you a live picture from the ground. As soon as we are ready to do that, we will do that. Live in vallejo, channel 2 news. John, just a quick question. Is there any danger of this fire spreading . It doesnt look like it. It appears they have a good handle on it. Reporter yeah. This is kind of a desolate kind of place. Theres not much here. Theres another big plant to the left that looks like its not in operation. There really is nowhere that it would spread other than a little grass land. That doesnt seem to be an issue either. Certainly the smoke could be a problem. If youre driving across what is it 37 up here. I believe so. Reporter yeah. The smoke is billowing right across the freeway out here. So if youre doing that, you definitely want to keep your windows shut and your air conditioning off because you dont want to be breathing in any of these fumes. All right, john, we will let you gather more information and come back to you later. Just to recap in case youre just joining us, two fires burning at this hour. The one that john is talking about that youre looking at here, these are pictures taken from a little bit ago. This is at a Metal Recycling plant in the mare island area. The other fire is burning in santa clara. Its outside of a building called Hope Services. And it appears that donation bins there were burning. That fire appears to be pretty well under control now. Just for per speck testify here on where the Hope Services building is located, its not far from 101. And its also in the vicinity of levi stadium. We have a reporter there. As soon as we can establish a connection with her, we will go to christina. But, again, two fires burning right now. For the most part the fire in santa clara is pretty much out. And from what i understand, we have helicopter pictures from santa clara now. We can show you what it looks like there. This is the fire there. And you can see always a good sign when you have white smoke like that. It essentially means for the most part this fire appears to be out. Thats a lot different from an earlier picture that we saw where we saw active flames. It looks like the bins that appeared to be in the parking lot area of Hope Services that have been on fire, you can see fire crews have essentially got the flames down. At this point you see more of the white smoke. As you were mentioning, it appears to be out at this hour. The good news for both of the fire, if there is any good news, they havent spread. They have been in isolated areas. It doesnt appear that the fires will spread at the recycling plant, the one in vallejo. Also, they were able to keep this fire was burning in santa clara for a while. Bill was talking about the wind, 15 to 20 miles per hour. Really pushing those flames. But it appears judging from the pictures that that fire was contained. The firefighters did a good job containing it to the donation bins. It doesnt look like any of the buildings in the area burned. We do have christina on the scene. She is gathering information for us. And as soon as we can establish a signal with her, we will go to christina rendoan and get information on the fire. The race is to get levi stadium ready before game day. Yesterday it was ripped up and brown and now they are trying to get it game ready green. Ann, you spoke with a sod and turf expert and the question everybody wants to know, is this going to work . Reporter he says it should. In fact, replacing sod last minute is not that uncommon. However, it means that it will be an untested surface for players. At levi stadium, rolls of it are going on. Double cut, extra thick sod. And coach harbaugh says he is confident it will be ready for sunday. The newfield is going in. Once again, its our organization, we can count on them to do things at the highest level. Reporter just yesterday the 49ers ripped up the entire field after concerns it wasnt safe for players. West coast turf has been handling the turf there and asked not to comment. We talked to a sod expert gil who is familiar with what they are up against. The sand is not holding as well as they would like it to. That is giving way under the turf. Reporter gil that runs the grass farm in morgan hill says the thicker sod will offer more stability. It wont give as easily. They put more soil on it, make it easier. That way it can resist what is happening now. Reporter sod like this can go in one day and be playable soon after according to experts. In fact on thursday, eagles hosted a team on grass that had been installed that afternoon. Its not unprecedented to have a game canceled because of bad turf. It happened back in 2001 at this eagles game. Players would love to see the newfield before they play on it. I may have to sneak on it. I would love to walk around on it and see it. Reporter as for the impact of all of the field troubles, the high school double header that was scheduled for august 29th has been moved to october. However, a soccer game that is scheduled for september 6th is still on. Live in santa clara, ann reuben, ktvu channel 2 news. A reminder here the 49ers game is on ktvu this sunday. We told you about the first fire at alco metal and iron in vallejo. Here is video of the other fire at a nonprofit Donation Center. It pears that it broke out in donation bins and trucks in the parking lot of Hope ServicesDonation Center on Alfred Street which is not far from highway 101. Christine is live at the Donation Center located in santa clara. Christina, from above it looked like firefighters were getting ai good handle of it. Is that what youre seeing. Reporter yes. The white smoke behind us is a good indication that firefighters have it under control. Were talking about three to four donation trucks that caught on fire and other storage item as well. The trucks were full of items. But to give us more information we bring in now battalion chief casey potts. We started receiving multiple calls for an outside fire at 3100 alfred avenue. The business is known as Hope Services. Its a donation collection center. And we found that there was two, maybe three or so box trucks fully engulfed in fire. Those trucks appear to contain donated items such as clothing, perhaps furniture and electronic and plastic goods. The fire was well involved upon arrival of our crews. There was no outside exposure problems as far as additional buildings. It was isolated to the outside fire and the trees in the area. Our biggest concern was smoke for neighboring businesses and potential for embers to be downwind. Pretty quick attack by the fire crews using master streams to knock down the bulk of the fire. What we have now is an extensive overhaul operation. Were kind of viewing it as a rubbish fire at this point. So much of the debris has fallen in upon itself and it will take significant labor to pull that apart and take care of the hot spots. We will have a little bit of smoke extension for the next hour or so. But we think we have a good handle on that. The fire will not go anywhere at this point. We saw this fire move quickly from the highway. There was large billowing smoke coming from this area. Is there any indication that this smoke is dangerous to the neighboring businesses or people around here. All smoke is viewed as dangerous. We view smoke as being a fuel source for the fire itself. We view any smoke that people are exposed to as being a car sin gin and we dont want anyone to be exposed to that, including our own personnel. We issued a shelter to use order to them. And then we try to have our crews work upwind of that so theyre not standing in the smoke too. Thank you, casey potts with the santa clara Fire Department. At this point theres no indication how this fire started but investigators are on their way out here. As he just said, they will be out here for an hour or so cleaning up the fire. They pretty much have it under control. Live in santa clara, ktvu channel 2 news. This is video of the other fire from vallejo. These pictures were taken earlier. Reporter were on busy macarthur boulevard. Take a look. The sidewalks are narrow and in some cases dont exist on some blocks. This is one of the places that oakland hopes to improve for pedestrians with new state money it is about to receive. For these two Mills College students crossing the boulevard on the way to and from campus is not fun at all. Its overgrown with stuff and its not very wide or feels safe. The traffic is kind of crazy. Reporter in some stretches, there are no sidewalks. The traffic and freeway overpass can make it intimidating they say. Its not very welllit and its very easy to trip over things. Reporter improving macarthur boulevard is one of two projects oakland plans to develop with 6 million that it is receiving in the state transportation fund.
