just continues to stretch on. probably happened maybe half an hour or so ago. we don't know whether there were any injuries. but again the good news if there is any is that the lanes have been reopened. but boy you really get a sense here of just how bad the traffic is. again this is 680 in dublin in the southbound direction. be prepared for a big back up that you see there. we'll keep you posted as we get more information. tonight the nation's capital and nation center are on high alert. while officials are taking precautions, from top leaders to ordinary citizens the response has precautions against the terrorist threat. and the president still plans to travel to new york and the pentagon as well as shanksville pennsylvania on sunday to mark the 9/11 anniversary. the security alert is felt here in the bay area. especially in san francisco. and ktvu's rob roth is telling us what's going on beginning with at&t park. >> reporter: fans have already began arriving for tonight's dodger match up. security is what it normally is for dodger game. but with the 9/11 anniversary, security is high this weekend especially at high profile landmarks like this and at transit hubs. at san francisco international airport, passengers may notice more security and police keeping close watch than again they may not. >> for the most part they should notice any changes, all the planning and implementation we've done is behind the scenes. >> reporter: one passenger told us she has no concerns about flying today, but -- >> i'm very concerned on sunday. very. you know very concerned. i mean i'm traveling on 9/11 and i'm traveling out of newark. from newark to miami. it's a big city so i'm concerned about that. >> it's a needle in a hay stack. it'll either happen or it won't. the say there have been no credible terrorist threats against the bay area. law enforcement is also urging people to keep their eyes open and report anything that looks suspicious. coming up at 6:00, we will take a look at security measures on b.a.r.t. reporting live in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu news. the new york stock exchange and other trading floors marked the anniversary of the september 11 attacks. at the nyc floor, ten panels hung on the wall. three show where the terrorist planes hit on that day. the other seven list the names of the victims. thousands of workers at the pentagon gathered to commemorate those who lost their lives. secretary of defense leon panetta delivered an address saying that the building was turned into a battleground on that day. >> the people who have stunning new details including a desperate plea for help from a woman from santa cruz who was killed in hawaii a week ago. 35-year-old celestial castman died on september 1st while on vacation with her boyfriend in maui. an eyewitness account describes a brutal fight between castman and her boyfriend. a woman says that castman ran up to him and asked for help. the boyfriend then say, everything is fine. the boyfriend took castman to the edge of a cliff. castman was found dead. the boyfriend was found injured and is in the hospital. the national weather service has issued a fire weather watch for hills in the south bay and east bay and the inland parks of monterey county. this also extends east to the sacramento county and north to shasta county. >> let's talk a little bit more about those thunderstorms bill. what do you think? cause for concern here? >> this time of year any time you have a pop of lightning yeah. definitely a cause for concern: but it's a slight chance and the best chance for thunderstorms is going to be tomorrow night late. and it's beginning to be in the southeast bay out toward morgan hill and gilroy. you don't want to see lightning. now here is the latest development in the last hour or so. the national hour service has issued a red flag warning for the north bay. not for lightning strikes but because it's hot, it's dry and the humidity is down around 20%. with this in effect, the red flag warning until 11:00 a.m. on saturday. now we move on to what we're looking at in terms of fire weather watch for the east bay hills. it's not a red flag warning as we head into saturday and sunday. it's a fire weather watch for the east bay hills dry lightning -- there's a chance of it especially on saturday night into sunday morning. the big story i think is going to be up in the west slope of sierra where they most likely will see thundershowers, dry lightning and issues with showers. we'll have more on this, this is definitely an evolving story. a chance of thundershowers pretty slight for most of the bay area. we head into the bay area weekend. it is going to be hot in some places, hot out there right now. back here in about dark. here in california, arizona and mexico. but authorities tonight are warning that the power grid is still very fragile. we first told you about the outage right after it happened yesterday during ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. authorities say it could take weeks to find out how a mistake by a single utility worker in arizona could have cascaded across the southwest. today they are urging customers to conserve power by going easy on major appliances such as air conditioners. airports across the region found themselves playing catch up today. things started getting back on track at sfo this afternoon. virgin america at terminal 2 cancelled one arriving flight in san diego. at the southwest counter a line began counting at 4:30 this morning with people looking to rebook their outgoing trips to san diego. >> $50 to go home last night and $50 to get here this morning. >> so an extra $100. >> outover my vacation money, yeah. but i'm going, i'm going. i'm determined, we're going to get there. >> reporter: we're told that most airports had back up systems supported by generators in case of a power grid failure. but not all essential functions were supported by generators until the case of the ai g9 in about 40 minutes people will come together to mark the first anniversary of the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. ktvu's noel walker is in bruno where she talked to survivors who say today is stirring a lot of emotions. >> reporter: officials put up barricades in the neighborhood. they put them there so that this neighborhood prone to looky lu's can celebrate their memorial in peace. for those who lived it, one year seems just like yesterday. >> when i came holy christ you can't believe there was this tower of flame going way way up. and a terrible roar. >> reporter: pat gray was among the few dozens protesters marking the anniversary outside pg & e headquarters today by demanding change. >> reporter: my concern is that these exact same pipes are all over the state. so we were all sitting around waiting for a repeat of what happened. >> reporter: it's a valid concern, not just for san bruno or everyone california, but -- even california but across the country. there's 3 million miles of untested pipeline. that's almost a trip from here to the moon. some of the ages lines are overdue for replacement like the line in san bruno. >> currently 90% of the bill was supposed to be footed by the rate payers and that's not -- >> which in this case? are the victims. >> right. you and me. we all pay. we all have pg & e. >> reporter: that's something the watchdog group the utility reform says it will be watching out for. >> reporter: what term wants to make sure is that the they do not end up netting a huge project. >> reporter: pg & e spoke out, news. we want to give you a live look of what's happening. this is live pictures from news chopper 2. as you can see southbound traffic moving a little bit better than it was earlier today. but what's happening right now is crews are trying to clean up from this accident. you see there a big rig on your screen. well apparently a big rig, a semi tractor trailer and this car were involved in an accident and at one point that car wound up underneath the semi. that of course led to some road closures and an awful lot of back up. but it does appear as though the southbound lanes, traffic all along the southbound lanes is getting better. but again some traffic trouble along the sonol grade tonight as crews try to clean up after an accident there in dublin. hurricane katrina moved into the north atlantic today on a pass to miss hitting the united states and canada. this view from space shows it about half way between bermuda and nova scotia. now on to our weather and pretty nice out there today. quite warm. let's check in with our chief meteorologist bill martin. >> we were very warm two days ago then we cooled yesterday. today temperatures warmed up. we have fog at the coast. and it's pinched behind it. you have fog from stinson beach all the way south. temperatures in the inland bay valleys, it was quite warm. you can see temperatures there. you have those purples over the top of fair field that's 100 taoegz. 1 00 degrees. a little bit of cooling at the coast. we were talking about the golden gate bridge and the fog. we had that spare the air day. we had the real heat two days ago. the air was really compressed. yesterday it expanded. it was cooler. you're expecting to see a compressed marine layer. you can see there's the golden gate bridge. it's not quite as compressed as it was two days ago. here's the marin head lands. if you're out here in the oakland hills, and you're looking down, you can look at the depths of that marine layer and make a forecast for the temperature in concord or everyone in sacramento. when it's shallow like that i'm going 95 in concord. when it's about this deep you go, 88. 87. i mean it really is a huge correlation between the depths of that marine layer which is shallower today. when it's shallow it's hot. temperatures are going to come down a little bit. it's going to deepen out a little bit. it's not super precise but you can tell a lot just by looking out there. it's a visual clue. it's been really foggy right at the beaches. low visibility as it pinches out. 58 in concord tonight. the nights are getting longer. i've noticed that outside in the mornings i'm getting out in many bay area locations, especially the smaller cities like forestville. temperatures are in the upper 40s. so yeah that's how you know it's kind of getting close to the equinox. these are the thunderstorms that we're going to be watching. they're already developed along the west slope of the sierra nevada. red flag warning in effect for the northern and eastern parts of the california and we have a fire weather watch. i'm going to have more on that. more specifics on your weekend. and i'll leave the fog thing alone. a across town are being blamed on the chaos last night following a protest at the city's powell street station. the vandals spray painted graffiti referencing to two b.a.r.t. shootings. >> we believe that what happened at glen park was related to the protest because there were some individuals who were wearing the same type of clothing at both stations. >> reporter: last night's powell street protest is the sixth in a string of demonstrations highlights alleged b.a.r.t. brutality. b.a.r.t. police closed the station for more than two hours as san francisco police confiscated media process. police arrested, cited and released 25 people although protesters remained in the designated protest area. >> the san francisco police department and the b.a.r.t. police department determined that their actions, their civil disobedience was interacting with the safe operation of b.a.r.t. >> it puts pressure on the every day b.a.r.t. rider. it puts pressure on b.a.r.t. all together. because from my understanding these are not going to stop until b.a.r.t. does something. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. riders say they are frustrated by the station closures and the vandalism that's being tied to the protest. >> there has to be a better way than that. that doesn't solve anything and it makes things more difficult to commuters. >> reporter: another protest is scheduled for civic plaza on monday evening. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on that b.a.r.t. protest, and this afternoon b.a.r.t. released the names and hometowns of the 24 people arrested there at the powell street station. eight are san francisco residents, three are oakland residents and 11 others reside from communities ranging from fremont to martinez to pennsylvania. nummi shut down service to all cable cars for a brief moment this morning. nummi ran buses on those lines while the cable cars were idle. officials said they had a problem with a telephone line that carries radio communications to the cable cars. they fixed the problem and had the cable cars back up and running again by around 12:30. a somber anniversary where a memorial is set to begin soon in san bruno. allie rasmuss now in san bruno to tell us how the survivors are dealing with the anniversary of that tragedy. >> a somber procession down clairmont drive, workers who spent months clearing the wreckage after the san bruno explosion came together with neighbors. they laced eight roses through the fences of these vacant lots to memorialize the people who died in this tragedy. >> his mother levon and son williams. >> reporter: the guards let them cross a security gate to see part of the pipeline that exploded. it's still there, unburied and exposed. for some it brought back a slew of memories. >> i was having some flash backs of the fire. >> my neighbors aren't back yet. their homes aren't built yet. this just happened although it was a year ago. >> reporter: phillip remembers running away from the flames. they plan to stay home. >> my wife and i will reflect to ourselves about everything that happened that day. >> all i could see was just fire. that sight was just blowing the gas down the street. >> reporter: he says this year he will focus on rebuilding his home. >> it's only been a year, and some things that you remember, i will probably remember things like that all my life. >> reporter: and bachmann is hoping a late night tv appearance will boost her campaign. she's set to appear on the tonight show next friday. bachmann will already be in l.a. to speak at the tea party convention. bachmann has been trying to regain her lead of the polls. perry and romney will debate again. the two presidential candidates sparred over the issues of jobs and social security. since then they have continued their jabs through e-mail releases and on social media. thousands of people got up before the sun rose today and laced up their walking shoes all for a good cause. the susan g. komen three day walk kicked off in daly city this morning. each of the people taking part raised at least $3,000 for the cause. >> but the fight still continues for us to find the cure because for survivors like myself, i don't want my two teenage daughters to ever even know what breast cancer is. >> reporter: the walk will cover 60 miles through san francisco and the east and north bay. at&t increases it's signal strength in san francisco. how this church is playing a big role in the networks efforts to give customers in the city some extra bars. southwest airlines bumps up certain fares. why some analysts say the airline missed an opportunity to bring other airline prices down. many business travelers will be paying more to fly from now on. southwest has joined other airlines in raising fares for flights reserved at the last minutes. those are often tickets bought by corporate passengers. analysts said if southwest would have kept their prices lower, other airlines would have rolled their prices back. at&t customers in san francisco may have noticed more bars on their cell phones today. crews this morning installed a new cell site at this church. the new site is meant to improve coverage throughout the sunset district. representatives say the changes are needed to keep up with customers needs. >> 50% of our customers have now gone to smart phones, smart phones have taken root. they use more data. we need more lanes on the wireless highway. so that's what we've done. >> reporter: the network today also added more capacity to cell sites across the city and they're not done yet. officials tell us they are also working to improve their 4g signal. stanford hospital is blaming a subcontractor used by an outside vendor for a major privacy breech. as we first reported last night. the personal information of 20,000 patients was posted on a commercial website for nearly a year before officials found out about it last month. the data included people's names, and their diagnosis. the hospital issued a letter to patients apologizing and also offering free identity protection services. there is new concern tonight that chronic obstructive coronary disease is more prevalent than first thought. more people are likely to develop copd. men, people in rural areas and the poor are more likely to develop that disease. english researchers say they've identified a gene that can regular lay chronic pain. the scientist from cambridge university removed the ch2 genes from mice then studied how their nerves changed. they found that the gene is directly linked to neuropathic pain. they're not working on a drug to block the protein produced by the gene to treat pain caused by nerve damage. the findings were published in the journal of science. how one of the and low humidity. that will be dropped tomorrow afternoon. more fire danger exists. right now we go outside, it's 64 degrees down by the oakland air or by san francisco airport. there's that fog we are talking about. it's a little shallower. you see it at the bay. it's not making it inland. inland we have temperatures bordering in the upper 90s. it's actually warmer again today. today should be the hottest day. temperatures trend down. and clouds move in and a chance for those thundershowers. there's still an outside chance for people in the north bay or oakland, when you get down to morgan and gilroy and east, saturday night there's a chance for a thunderstorm. why is there a big deal? because it's fire season. the last thing you want is a lightning strike. usually recorded highs tomorrow, it really was hot in antioch. certainly cooler around the bay but the heat will continue in the inland bay valleys with low 90s and upper 80s. here's the mechanism for the storms. as it does this it's going to back out the low and the clouds are going to want to come our way. so thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. these things like heat will start to pop up. that looks up like marysville. it inches west, then we're worried about the livermore valley and parts here toward morgan hill. we're right on the edge of all of this. we're going to watch it. my buddy mark tamayo is
