Back to the desk. A berkeley firefighter is dead after a tractor accident at his familys home. Tara moriarty is at the firehouse where he worked where she just learned firefighters there were up most of the night mourning this loss. Reporter good morning. Firefighters weve learned were up until 3 00 this morning having an impromptu memorial for tony nunes. They say he was an allaround great by, heart of gold. One firefighter said he had a picture of his Facebook Page of him giving a tour of the firehouse to a bunch of kids. He said he was really well liked. Nunes was killed in a tractor accident last night around 6 30 on his family ranch near the National Park. A procession of firefighters and other crews escorted his body to the Coroners Office. He was killed while driving his tractor. It slid 200 feet downage embankment and rolled, pinning him underneath. He was working on a dirt road to prepare for the rain storm. Firefighters poured into the Coroners Office grief stricken. Nunes worked for berkeley father but his father and three brothers all worked for the contra costa Fire Department. His father and brother larry were battalion chief. His brother ed works as a reserve. His brother were died in 2005 of cancer. His daughter was a gold rush cheerleader up until next year. This morning, Fremont Police continue to investigate a crash between an amtrak train and a car. It happened last night on duster berry way. When firefighters arrived, they found an overturned vehicle next to the track. There were two people inside. One was unconscious and had to be extricated. Both people were taken to the hospital. Alex savidge is here now to tell us how this turned into a hit and run. Alex . Reporter well, good morning, to you. One to two three drivers racing here in fairfield left the scene. It was an innocent driver trying to make this left hand turn who was tboned by one of those speeding cars last night. This was after 5 00 here at the intersection of lopes road and canyon hills drive. The innocent driver behind the wheel of a black mazda sedan died here at the scene. Police say his car was struck by an infiniti coupe. Witnesses had seen the infiniti racing a black Toyota Pickup truck right before the crash happened. One neighbor said she and several people tried to safe the life of the man in the mazda by giving her cpr. This gentleman who actually was deceased, he was just just driving down the road. Had no idea this was coming. Reporter there was also a man in the infiniti who suffered lifethreatening injuries. Police believe he was one of the two racers involved in last nights crash. Police say they are looking for the second driver. That person was behind the wheel of a black late model tundra pickup. That truck drove off after the accident. About 20 officers from the san jose chp offices left around 6 30 this morning. Thats where one of the officers who died used to work. Juan gonzalez and brian law were both killed last week while responding to an accident. They hit a guardrail while trying to respond to the vehicles involved in the crash. You are thinking about the family, whether you know them or not, they wear the same uniform. They are all part of this big family of brothers and sisters. Paufers from oakland officers from oaklands chp office left for bres fresno. Thats where brian law used to work. The governor will also be in attendance. A graduate of Stanford University made pro sports history last night. They were cheering for Jason Collins. City leaders in San Francisco are trying to change a state law that allowed proper owners to evict hundreds of bay area residents. Later, mark leno will introduce a bill aimed at closing a loophole in the ellis act. If it passes, investors wont be allowed to buy up apartment buildings and immediately evict the tenants. The city would be able to force the new buyer to have to wait as long as five years before tenants are evicted. Well, this morning, recommendations for a toll hike on the Golden Gate Bridge will be released. There are now options being considered. One option raises the toll by a dollar starting in april followed by a seshz of smaller increases over the next five years. Another plan pushes the toll as high as 8 a vehicle by 2018. Nonpropals involve m maintaining or decreasing the toll. One group plans to call for building a suicide safety net. Family members say the deputies created a lethal confrontation with an emotionally impaired man who also needed medical help. Fairfield police trying to track down one of two drivers involved in the street race that happened last night. It was a race that ended with a violent crash here at this intersection and this is where an innocent driver was killed you. That man was trying to make a lefthand turn here onto the street when he was tboned by one of those speeding cars involved in the race. The accident after 5 00 last night here at lopes road and canyon. The innocent driver behind the wheel of a black mazda sedan died at the scene. His car was struck by an infiniti couepe. And witnesses had seen that vehicle racing a black toyota. That toyota was then scene leaving the scene. The truck was not involved in the accident itself. Dozens of officers from the bay area are headed to fresno this morning to pay their respects to two chp officers killed in the line of duty. About 20 officers from the san jose chp office left around 6 30. Thats where one of the officers who died, 33yearold Juan Gonzalez used to work. Gonzalez and 34yearold brian law both were killed last monday in fresno while responding to an accident. They hit a guardrail while trying to avoid the vehicles involved in the original crash. You are just thinking about the family. These are whether you know them or not, they wear the same uniform, do the same job. They are part of this big family of brothers and sisters. Officers from oakland chps offices also left for fresno this morning. Thats where officer law law used to work. Thousands are expected to attend the service. The governor will be in attendance. 8 36. This morning, recommendations for a toll increase on the Golden Gate Bridge will be released. Now, four options are being considered. One raises the toll by one dollar, starting in april followed by several smaller hikes during the last five years. All of the proposals raised the tolls, with one of them up to 8 by 2018. Falling for more safety on the geg bridge as well Golden Gate Bridge as well. One Group Planned to call for the construction of a suicide safety net. The Group Includes families of those who lost loved ones to suicide on the bridge. A suicide barrier project is in the, with as well in the works as well. This morning, bay area firefighters are mourning the death last night of one of their own. 55yearold tony nunes was killed when the tractor he was riding on overturned and fell down a sleep hill. Many firefighters showed up to work were on the same shift and it was very upset. Most have left the station and gone to a department meeting. Today was the 28year anniversary of his career as a berkeley firefighter. As you can see, behind me me here, the flag is at half staff at station 7 where he worked. His two children are expected to come by as well as many neighbors who simply loved this firefighter. Nunes was killed in a tractor accident last night around 6 30 on his ranch near the National Park in unencorp rated unincorporated martinez. The man was killed while driving his tractor. It slid 200 feet down the canyon and rolled pinning him underneath. Tony was the guy who made everybody laugh. I worked with him on ailments 20 some years ago. We used to laugh all of the time. Speaking to his captain, i said what is one of the things that you always remember will tony . He said the thing that lit up tony the most was his love and joy and giving fire station tours to kids. Nunes worked with berkeley fire but his brother and three brothers worked for the Fire Department. His brother and brother larry were chiefs. Ed works as a reserve and his brother john was a captain who died of jobrelated cancer in 2009. His friends say nunes had a heart of gold, was a cowboy, loveled the 49ers. His daughter was a gold rush cheerleader up until last year and recently got married. And there are pictures of the two dancing on her wedding day. Breaking news out of San Francisco. We learned that muni is up and running again after the entire system was shut down. This is a picture that was tweeted out of people stuck in a subway station. Were getting tweets of people stuck in trains inside tunnels. The problem all started about 40 minutes ago with the computer glitch that shut everything down. Muni says it is experiencing delays still because of the shutdown. Right now, bus bridges are set up to help relieve the delays from this initial problem. Sal will have more on this in a moment. Robbed at home on a sunday afternoon in concord. The scary story one boy and his grandmother are telling police. Pam cook is in the newsroom with what happened and the surprising person who came to the rescue. Forming, good morning, pam. Good morning. Police say three armed men forced their way into a home in concord and tied up the people inside. It happened at 3 15 yesterday afternoon on via dobles. Officers say a boy and his grandmother were tied up. They say the men stole a safe from inside the house. After the men left, the boy was able to escape and run to a neighbors house and bang on the door. That neighbor happened to be state senator Mark Desaulnier who said the boy was very upset. Very quiet neighborhood. These things dont happen here. The good news, Concord Police have a very good description of the suspects. They describe the three men as latino between the ages of 19 and 30. One has a short buzz cut with a birth mark above his upper lip. Two may have been wearing red shirts at the time. At least five California Children being treated for a Mysterious Illness that has symptoms like polio. Researchers at stanford and uc texas say the children became ill between august of 2012 and july of last year. They had unexplained paralysis in their arms or legs. The scientists have determined its not polio. But it may be a new virus in the same family as polio. Silicon valley investors tim draper holds a News Conference about an initiative known as six californians. The initiative would split up california into six states.
