with backpack, tourists. these two young americans in their car stopped by federal armed gunmen, who took them into their custody and very quickly negotiations began between these gunmen and the authorities in that part of egypt. now apparently the reason for the kidnapping had nothing do with the fact that they were american. simply because they were very useful tools in a delicate situation, where by a local man who belonged to the same tribe had been arrested by the egyptian police. he had in his possession a very large quantity of marijuana. so these two americans became bargaining chips to get their relatives released. now very quickly, egyptian intelligence became involved in the negotiations which went on for about 24 hours. the latest is that these two young men have been released, they are at a hotel resting at this point. but as you said, it's not unusual since the revolution here at the beginning of last year, the sort of security services in sinai have deteriorated in many parts of the sinai peninsula. there isn't much in the way of police presence, so this sort of thing has been known to happen. it's the first time it really happened in the spaceship 2. it's a six- passenger spacecraft based on one that was tested in the mojave desert. the test flights will be about 70 miles above earth. they plan to take people into space to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and also see the curve of the earth against the black sky of outer space. happening right now, the dragon spacecraft is getting ready to land in the pacific ocean. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom watching everything. so what is going on? >> reporter: it's exciting right now because we're getting really nice shots of the dragon. this is the first privately built and operated spacecraft to dock at the international space station. take you out to live picture of the what i've been looking at this morning. usually we're looking at nasa mission control in houston. but this here live pictures in hawthorne. southern california. they're known as face x. you can hear them, they're calling the spacex capsule in. the company name space ex employer agrees technology, the countdown clock there. they're been showing this running clock, countdown, dragon splash down. cup see 301 some three minutes left until it is set to splash down in the pacific ocean. somewhere between san diego and baja, california were the last reports that we received. the dragon, very crucial, bringing home scientific experiments and samples collected by the astronauts at the international space station. so of course this splashdown hopefully a nice landing in the pacific ocean is critical to the science that's being done up there in the space station. now again the spacecraft unmanned, it did spend five days up at the space station where it delivered food and supplies. we've been following it since the channel 2 morning news, 4:30 this morning, because the dragon undocked from the international space station. here's some pictures after it undocked. it was roughly 3:00 this morning our time and these are fantastic shots as it -- undocks from the space station there and you're looking towards earth. again, supposed to flash down now less than three minutes. and we also want to tell you that it -- they were showing some shots. hopefully they put that up here, again this is hawthorne, california. they're controlling it now. but just moments ago, i was looking at shots. you can see the parachutes, the capsule had parachutes that deployed shortly after it entered the earth's atmosphere. of course, to slow it down. we're used to seeing the space shuttle which can manure luke an airplane in the atmosphere. but this is like the old- fashioned apollo mission that has parachutes deployed in order to slow it down for its splashdown in the pacific ocean some we're looking live at spacex. this is a private company that is running this mission. this is the second successful trip to space and back safely into the eric's atmosphere for this company. it did launch a capsule into orbit in december 2010, so this is now the second time. but this of course now an even more important mission because it is carrying again very foreign experiments, science experiments, samples taken up at the international space station. so hoping they would put that countdown clock again because i'm sure we're less than a minute at this point. so we're kind of hoping that they could go out or stay anonymous because kind of hoping they'll go back out and show that picture of the capsule itself with the parachutes. but they're right now showing the control room again. they seem calm in there. they seem very calm, considering this is about ready to splash down in the pacific ocean this morning. >> we're watching the same thing. and any word or -- the young owner, the investor behind this project, any sign of him in that room or -- that you've been able to spot? >> i'm not sure which person he is. certainly i've heard that a number of the people in the room kind of like facebook, all have a vested interest. but now they're showing the pictures. and let's listen in just for a moment. looks like 12 seconds. you can see the capsule there kind of blurry but the parachute is there. but -- there's a really clear -- there you can see it some of the parachutes. >> doesn't that remind you of the old video of the apollo missions is. >> it does! >> exactly. and i was looking online, the company gets its own by paypal kessler co-fun toker eller musk, so definitely interesting. for the privately owned. >> up he made some good in v.s. >> he's had a lot of backlash from famous astronauts john glenn and some of the others who really didn't want him to intrude into this area of expertise and space exploration. so it hurt him, so he had hoping that this success will help ease some of that pain. >> certainly, it may be open up some joint efforts as well, because nasa talks a lot about funding. we talk about federal funding kind of going by the wayside or at least being severely reduced. so the fact there's a need for privately funded operations like this. >> and i understand that three rescue boats will be out in the pacific to rescue dragon when it does splash down in the pacific, and assuming it's successful, spacex will transport dragon back to court before faring it to its texas facility for inspection. certainly sex sight to go find out the results of the experiments onboard. touching downing between baja and san diego in the pacific so i assume they've cleared the area of boats or any other people that might be drifting there so they wouldn't get caught in the splashdown. >> also interesting, this is history. this is history. and as pam you mentioned, they seem so calm. this is a history making moment, no jumping up and down in the room but what they've done has never been done before. to send that rocket up to the international space station, taking supplies, letting it it unloaded it come back, this is never happened before. >> right. i'll send it back to you guys. it's amazing they are just sitting there calmly. but again, we've passed the time. it is supposed to be in the water right now and it's into our ships there to retrieve is so as we get nor video in, we'll bring it to you. >> all right, pam.
