17, that looks good no major problems as you drive down to the bottom of the hill. also if you are driving on westbound 24, it is getting more crowded let's go back to dave and heather. hundreds of students have evacuated their dorms after a gas leak forced them out into the cold. a car forced them out into channing on berkeley. sal, you know all the details, so what happened. dave this is a car crash near the uc berkeley campus. you can see the air to marks that were left here in the dirt and this car then slammed into a gas line rupturing it. it sent gas leaking into the air and this entire dorm building had to be evacuated. everything started at 2:45 this morning. they manually activated the alarms and several hundred students made their way out of the building for more than an hour. some students said they heard screeching and then the building shook. but we spoke to a sergeant who said this was an orderly evacuation. >> the fire alarm went on and it was scary because we had to be evacuated. we were running down here and we could smell the gas and it was just like right there. >> uc berkeley police have been detain had but police don't have a sense of why he lost control in the first place. >> reporter: this particular gas leak will remain shut off as pg&e continues to do repair work to again repair this gas line ruptured in a car crash early this morning. live this in crimes. tara moriarty is there to investigate the 31st homicide and tara, it happened right where you are standing inside that safe way. >> this is information, asking him to use chp for help. that is to combat the violence program and the most recent is happening here at this safe way. it happened at 8:30 near story road. they received reports for a man in his 20s near the produce aisle and when they arrived they realized they had been stabbed in the chest. he died at the scene. police classified the death of a man found saturday as a homicide. authorities said the past eight days have been some of the most violent, six killings, 10 shootings and 8 officers hurt. police say their staffing levels are simply too low. >> it is difficult to continue running at this level. we are at a position where we will welcome some help. >> that is where they will come in regarding chp but he wants to talk to his own officers and find out what he wants. he took 17 of them for backbone checks but that is just a political thing and they do agree something needs to be done to stop the violence. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 morning news. just about an hour from now a coast guard cutter will arrive for a search of what is called an unknown object. right now a plane is searching the waters 60 miles southwest of the golden gate bridge. around midnight a report came in from a ship which looked like a plane with its wings on fire. so far they say nothing unusual has been found. well that spark is now 40% contained but is still threating who is. this one is burned -- has burned more than 21,000 acres and destroyed more than 50 structures. evacuation orders are still in place in many areas. this is going to be the worst year for wildfires. the old record was set in 2006 and that's when 9. 8 million acres burned. according to the fire setter, 2012 will probably surpass that number because of all of the drought conditions. former military members as well as cia members, they have launched a television attack against president barack obama. the group accuses the president of taking too much personal credit for the raid that killed him. and the care map of the u.s. joints chiefs of staff calls it disappointing. >> if somebody uses their uniform for partisan politics, i am disappointed by that because it does erode the trust we have with the american people. >> we feel we are doing the right thing. >> the group claims it is nonpartisan but a number of its members have republican ties. meantime, todd aiken is vowing to continue his bid for the u.s. senate. but support live allison burns ktvu channel 2 morning news. time now 6:16 a lawyer for martian lynch claims race may have been a factor when he was arrested. they arrested lynch and they suggested their racial differences may have played a role. he said he had been swerving all over the road and he believes the reason there is no dash-cam video is because police turned off their camera. he said the camera was just not working properly and martian pled not guilty. wilfredo reyes was arrested last month. he is charged with twee three counts of murder -- three counts of murder for his case in the murder of tony balogna and his sons michael and matthew bologna. he was the trigger man. a disturbing case of animal abuse. somebody duct taped a poor turtle to a bunch of balloons and sent it into the air. ktvu channel 2 morning news. >> more violence to tell you about, it happened inside a safe way, they were told a man appeared to have had a seizure but when they arrived they realized he had been stabbed in the chest. authorities may be called in to help san jose to help the rise in crime. new details about a shooting that came out of a preseason football game which happened last friday in the parking lot right near the university of phoenix stadium in glendale a arizona. now he is still in the hospital and had been shot in the face. the suspected gunman, a cardinals fan. he has not been arrested as of yet. they are trying to figure out what sparked the shooting and both of those men are residents of arizona. and in just a few hours, they will be affected by the chevron refinery fire. it is affected near the north heritage on fred jackson way. it starts a 9:00 a.m. and you will be able to do that. and at the community center, it will remain open, but chevron said this saturday it will be the last day to consider a claim and in the meantime they will consider phone in claims. they operate the telephone emergency notification system and that's after delays were two hours there in richmond. there ahead of the communities community watch system, says it should take 30 minutes after the system to notify 20,000 people. and looking beyond at&t cell phone towers as a possible source of the police radio problems. now the city found signals from certain at&t towers had been interfering and they shut down some of those frequencies. now police are still having problems which means other cell phone towers may possibly be to blame. they are now testing specific locations. well a washington state man is being charged with with making threats against president barack obama. they tracked the 30-year-old to 'apartment building but when he went to the door he was develop wally arrested. they are not giving any details only that it was sent to a general fbi address. and in election news mitt romney has not received much of a bounce from his vice presidential selection. 47% plan to back president barack obama and vice-president joseph biden in november compared to 46% who say they favor mitt romney and ryan. that is after a poll before the congressman was added to the gop ticket. meantime they are on high alert at the national convention and they are keeping a close eye on the tropical storm which could hit the tampa area next week. that is when 50,000 will be in town and the convention runs from monday to thursday, they are with state agencies incase of an just last night, tara? >> reporter: we have already seen people trickling in most of them were not on shift when the brazen happened last night inside the store. but they are certainly talking about it. it happened off capital expressway. a man in his 20s was stabbed in the chest at the produce aisle and died near the scene. and another man was found dead in a park and was classified a homicide. there have been 6 killings, 10 shootings and eight officers hurt. >> san jose statistically again is one of the sayest -- safest, however if you are part of that violent crime, that statement means nothing to you. >> they have edged help from the highway patrol. he wants to his open of others to find out what they need. it is simply not enough to fight crime in a city of 1 million people. live legal battle of apple and samsung. each claimed they infringed and they have 2 billion in damages while apple owes it $421 million. an independent auditor says the biggest supplier is upgrading working conditions at three of its factories in china. they have made 91 improvements due by the end of may. fox conn is ahead of schedule on improvements that are dubai next -- due by next july.
