Reporter after being silent on the subject for more than a week after the slaughter in newtown, the chief of the National Rifle association declared today the nras solution for stopping School Shootings is to have an armed guard in every school. Just like they have them at banks and sports arenas. Why is the idea of a gun good when its used to protect the president or our police but bad when its used to protect our children in our schools . Reporter the nra proposes a new program to protect americas schools called National School shield, but they were not able to protect their own News Conference from protestors. The nra has blood on its hands reporter california senator dianne feinstein, who is proposing a new assault weapons ban, says she is upset the nra didnt go any further about gun restrictions. Its inconceivable after what the nra said to me today that they dont think people who have guns should have background checks or that they should be registered. Its a horribly poor choice to say, you know, that the answer to gun violence is to put more guns out there. Reporter andrew is a parent of students in the west Contra Costa School District based in richmond. The School District deploys 20 Armed Police Officers in all high schools and middle schools at a cost of 2 million a year. The district has put no cops in its three dozen Elementary Schools and has no plans or money to do so. Im glad were having that conversation because i think we have experience here. I think its an overreaction if you want to know my position as a dualy elected school board member. How am i going to put Armed Police Officers at 50 schools . Reporter its expensive and its a complicated issue. Just to give a sense of how complicated it is, consider columbine. That high school had an Armed Security officer. That incident happened during a time in the country when there was a ban on semiautomatic weapons. The owner of bay area firearms Scott Jackson typically trains about 50 people a month. This month, business skyrocketed six times. This month we went up to about 300 and 85 are female. She says she decided to learn how to use a gun after two men recently tried to break into her house while she and her three daughters were inside. Dixon agreed to an extension of her case. Extend that . Yes. Reporter but the details of the charges and what led to dixons arrest are currently under court seal. Sandra mitchell is dixons mother. I love my daughter and my love and prayers are with her and the family and were praying for the best, we are. She has done everything her ability to clear herself, and she did everything she is supposed to do and im proud of her. Reporter while mitchell would not discuss the specifics of the case, she says her daughter is scared. Shes a nervous wreck. This is new and shes, you know, to see her in chains like that come out its hard for our family. Reporter kumra was a well known businessman in the south bay a onetime owner of the mountain winery. Today the los gatosmontserrano Police Department assures the public that the murder was not random and there is no ongoing danger to the community. As for dixon, she was arrested in Mountain View this past tuesday. Her Attorney Says his client has been questioned by police just one aspect of this investigation he is concerned about. I have a lot of questions on how a single client mother gets arrested being charged with a pc32 and nothing anybody or any of her family members know anything about it. Its just out of the blue charge and i think they might just want somebody to charge that homicide to. Reporter now, a spokesman for the los gatosmontserrano Police Department will only say that this investigation is very much activity. It is ongoing. We are following a developing story in central pennsylvania. Its where a gunman shot and killed three people including a woman who was decorating for a Childrens Christmas Party at a church. Police say the gunman killed two other men at another location before he was shot and killed by state troopers. Investigators are still looking for a motive. Reporter we have been following this young woman doing stories on her since 1998 so she no longer a student instead a professional. Her message tonight is useful, timely and deeply felt. Weather we first met salina lane she was only 19 and totally on her own. She and her younger sister lived month to month in east oakland raising their younger brother. They work minimum wage jobs after school to pay the bills. No welfare, no parents to rely on. Its something that will never go away. When you feel rejected left alone and abandoned that is the hardest thing in the world to accept because you know it was done intentional. If you can imagine children from the time theyre infants where no one cares whether you wake up, have food, clothes, much less clean clothes, whether or not you go to school. Reporter we followed silena as she graduated from usf then served in the peace corps in africa. Now she is the Program Director for a nonprofit called up on top working with kids from the tenderloin and the western addition. But more recently, it was a tragedy that reconnected us. In august, she get a latenight call from her uncle. Of course he couldnt get a word out and i knew even before he said it that someone in our family was murdered. Reporter her cousin malik was only 16, murdered in what appeared to be an attempted robbery. It was a flashback for silena whose brother was murdered in 2006. Frederick layne, his case never solved. Its never a moment in a day that i dont think about my brother and how he impacts every decision that i have made. Reporter during the last 10 years, 10 members of silenas family have been murdered but its her cousins murder that haunts brothers murder. Should she have skipped the peace corps to be home with him. I have to establish myself in a solid foundation. Reporter she talked about her brother at a speech for students rising would every. I thought i could give him something of substance some guidance but i later realized that he needed a man, a father, and not just a big sister. Reporter more than half the homicide victims in the United States are africanamericans 85 men mostly young. We need our men to be role models. Thats another good one. Reporter but its not just men she says. Its everyone. And the values begin at home. I lead by example. Going to work every, single day making sure my bills are paid, making sure that im constantly available when someone needs a shoulder or an ear. Did you already read that one. And every 25 to 30 miles we would need food because i was planning on doing between 20 to 30 miles a day.
