let's go to anne makovec who joins us now from san bruno with the latest on this story. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sydnie. at least 29 lawsuits have already been filed involving more than 100 people. two more suits are expected to be filed today. this neighborhood is still blocked off this morning. now, the lawyers of course getting involved two months later. most of the suits point the finger of blame squarely at pg&e alleging the company did not properly maintain the gas line that blew up two months ago and/or that the company did not have appropriate safety measures in place like automatic shutoff valves for the line in case of emergency. gas did flow through the pipe for almost an hour and a half, feeding this fire, before pg&e was able to access its shutoff switches at remote locations. eight people were killed, 35 homes destroyed. with all these lawsuits floating around, pg&e wants them all to be heard by one judge instead of separately. that could open the door for these cases to be heard in another location outside of san mateo county. the company did formally request that consolidation from the state judicial council and a response is expected within 60 days. more than 100 plaintiffs. you may be surprised by some of them. we'll talk a little bit more about that coming up in the next half hour, sydnie. >> anne, thank you. ann bruno -- excuse me, anne makovec in san bruno. two town hall meetings are planned to talk about the sentence of johannes mehserle convicted of involuntary manslaughter and received a two- year prison term for the death of oscar grant in oakland. several youth organizations will hold a meeting this afternoon in oakland. grant's uncle is organizing another meeting tomorrow afternoon at a baptist church in oakland. the fruitvale bart station is back open this morning after more than 100 people gathered last night to call attention to the deaths of oscar grant and derrick jones. jones was shot by oakland police monday morning during a domestic dispute. officers chased him and opened fire after they say he reached for his waistband. the bart station was shut down for about an hour but the protest was peaceful. time now 5:03. the man accused of killing a bay area woman in her own apartment is scheduled to be arraigned this morning. 44-year-old gary scott holland was arrested last friday. he is accused of killing kathleen horan in her apartment in san francisco's russian hill neighborhood. prosecutors say holland got into horan's home by posing as a utility employee checking for a gas leak. also scheduled for arraignment today, 43-year-old will lynch who is accused of attacking a retired priest in los gatos. jerold lindner was assaulted at a jesuit retirement center in may. lynch was arrested last month. lynch says the priest molested him and his brother during a church camping trip in 1975. lindner was never charged. the church paid a settlement in the case. this morning a law enforcement panel is fighting to repeal jessica's law. that's the law that makes it illegal for sex offenders to live within 2,000 feet of a school or park. the panel says the 2006 law may be doing more harm than good because the 2,000 feet rule means offenders have trouble finding places to live. so many of them are homeless and that makes it difficult for the state to monitor them. corrections officials say 2100 sex offenders in california list themselves as transients. it will be right to work for state lawmakers when the newest members are sworn in next month. governor arnold schwarzenegger is calling a special legislative session that same day december 6 to deal with the state's budget deficit. the legislative analysts say there is a $6 billion shortfall in the budget that was passed just five weeks ago. one budget committee member wonders about the timing of the session. >> if it was really that urgent, if the governor really felt this urgency, he should have called that special session now. he didn't. he waited until december of almost guaranteeing failure. >> the governor's working on a package of bills to deal with the deficit during the special session. well, time now 5:05. with rumors of a big merger growing, so is the prospect of layoffs at yahoo. mark sayre is in sunnyvale to tell us what could be on the horizon for workers. reporter: reports are circulating that yahoo is preparing to to lay off 20% of its workforce but yesterday yahoo said the reports are inaccurate citing anonymous sources, the techcrunch website said that yahoo was preparing to lay off 2800 employees. yahoo's response, quoting now, yahoo is always evaluating expenses to align with the company's financial goals. however, a 20% reduction in yahoo's workforce across the board is misleading and inaccurate. but in a separate report, the "wall street journal's" all things digital blog is putting the possible number of layoffs at about 650 workers. that would be centered on the company's product organization. that "wall street journal" blog says those layoffs would likely take place next month. that being december. now, under california law, any company that is planning to lay off 500 or more employees must file a 60-day notice with the state before it can execute a layoff that large. at this point, yahoo has not filed any such notice with the state. but again, juliette, the reports in multiple tech websites and also in the business trade press saying possible layoffs here as soon as next month. >> thank you, mark sayre. 5:06. let's get another lawsuits are expected to be filed today. good morning to you, anne reporter: good morning, juliette. it has been over two months since that explosion. this neighborhood that was affected still closed down this morning and now the lawyers are getting more and more involved. more than 100 people have filed suits and more suits are expected to be filed today. most of the suits point the finger of blame squarely at pg&e, alleging the company did not properly maintain the gas line that blew up two months ago and that the lack of automatic shutoff valves showed negligence on the part of pg&e, allowing the fire to burn for about an hour and a half. eight people were killed. many of their families are among the plaintiffs as are the owners of the 35 homes destroyed. now, some of the plaintiffs, though, might surprise you. one of the lawsuits is actually from a pg&e stockholder who lives in new jersey, saying that pg&e's management team wasn't doing its job and should return parts of their salaries. pg&e wants all of these lawsuits to be heard by one judge instead of separately. and the company formally requested that from the state judicial council. a response is expected within 60 days. and that could be interesting because if the judicial council does decide that this could all be heard by one judge, this case could be heard elsewhere outside of san mateo county. juliette. >> all right, anne makovec in san bruno. anne, thank you. and today we're expecting to get the results of air samples taken after wednesday's flare-up at the sorrow refinery near martinez. air quality officials want to find out whether the flares violated local air quality rules. the flare-ups sent plumas of smoke into the air and led to a -- plumes of smoke into the air and led to a "shelter in place" order. >> 5:32. more information is coming out now about the man who chp says shut down yesterday's morning commute on the upper deck of the bay bridge. craig carlos valentino is booked on suspicion of making criminal threats, brandishing a weapon and child endangerment. the 51-year-old is from antioch. carlos valentino is accused of calling 911 and claiming he had explosives. the police didn't find any. his teenaged daughter escaped unhurt during the standoff. the chp says carlos valentino tossed a gun over the bridge. they later found a plastic toy gun inside his suv. before the standoff, carlos valentino texted his sister saying he had killed himself because his wife had an affair. >> this is drama going on, on the bridge and please tell me this is not you because this is just beyond belief. oh, my god, it is you. it is you. i cannot believe it is you. >> although she is family, vivian a carlos says she has little sympathy for her brother's actions on the bridge. two san jose police officers fired for allegedly trying to cover up a former colleague's drunk driving are getting their jobs back. the mercury news says both were reinstated after a long arbitration process. they are expected back at work next month. and the husband of a german tourist killed in san francisco this summer is planning a return visit with his two sons. the examiner reports that he wants to show his children everything. police say a stray bullet hit the wife when two groups of young people started shooting at each other in union square. an 18-year-old arrested in the case was released because of lack of evidence. there is no dispute this morning. jean quan will be the next mayor o oakland. former state senator don perata conceded saying won't challenge the results. he says a lot of voters don't understand the new ranked choice system but won't call for a recount. it could be quite some time before there is a winner in the race for state attorney general the latest numbers showing republican steve cooley retaining a slim read over democrat kamala harris. the margin is less than 20,000 votes. more than a million mail-in provisional and damaged ballots >> that's jacques. >> oh, love it. >> thank you. >> awe, and you love this morning. >> gimme kisses. >> thanks, trace. 5:46. here's a check on some of our top stories. more people are suing pg&e over the deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno. there are now 29 lawsuits involving more than 100 plaintiffs in connection with the september blast. the san mateo county times says two more lawsuits are expected to be filed today. two town hall meetings are planned this weekend to discuss the sentencing of former bart police officer johannes mehserle. he received a two-year prison term for the involuntary manslaughter of oscar grant. several youth groups and an uncle of grant's are organizing the meetings. talk of a possible merger with aol has yahoo denying rumors of deep layoffs. some tech blogs are reporting the consumer products group is looking at cutting up to 20 percent of employees. yahoo calls those reports misleading and inaccurate. but the web portal stopped short of ruling out any layoffs. stem cell research has led to a potential breakthrough in understanding autism. the findings are published in the journal "cell." university of california scientists used stem cells from people with a neurological disorder. from there, they were able to replicate autism neurons in a lab dish. scientists hope the breakthrough will help test new autism drugs. doctors in southern california are using a new method to treat malignant brain tumors. for the first time, embryonic stem cells have been injected into a seattle woman's brain. drugs found in pills will then interact with the stem cells to create an active chemotherapy drug that attacks tumors. it's worked in mice. doctors say it will take a few months to see if this human attempt is successful. 7100 signatures are needed if san francisco residents want to vote on banning circumcision. the proposed ballot initiative would make it a misdemeanor to circumsize anyone under the age of 18. scientists with the centers for disease control are still studying circumcisions. they report a sharp drop recently in the number of parents opting for the procedure. 5:48 now. turns out that fat and calories may not be the only health risk at fast-food restaurants. researchers say the stuff that's actually wrapped around some of the food can be bad for you, as well. they say grease resistant food wrappers can leak dangerous chemicals into the food the chemicals are potentially deadly. the study's authors don't go so far as to say you should stop eating fast food but they call wrappers a preventable risk. >> i saw a story about a man who went on a junk food diet and he lost weight. he cut his calories. you might have been eating junk food but he cut his calories and lost the weight. 5:49. it's the latest addition to the bay area's dining scene. an entire store dedicated to cereal. >> plus, ditch the wallet and skip the credit cards. the cell phone is become the new hot way to pay. but just how safe is it?
