The bay bridge toll plaza has backups, all lanes are filled but no problems out of the maze. Back to you. Flames erupt along a popular hiking trail and fire investigators want to know if its connected to a string of suspicious fires in the east bay. Today in the bays bob redell is live where arson investigators are taking a closer look at this one. Reporter good morning, scott. Battalion chief with cocoa fire tells us theyre certainly concerned given this is at least the 12th fire along a hiking trail here in Pleasant Hill, the most recent one taking place behind me here just before 9 30 last night. This fire went up along the east bay mud walking trail. This runs up against a bunch of homes near oak park boulevard and 680 in Pleasant Hill. Witnesses tell the Fire Department they heard people out here around the time the fire started but no one actually saw anything. Firefighters were able to put out this fire before it spread and caused any damage. There have been more than 30 fires that have also been set along the iron horse trail in the neighboring city of concord. A fire investigator has already declared those to be arson. Its not clear if they are connected to the ones here in Pleasant Hill. About a dozen in Pleasant Hill. 30 more in concord. Still not clear if theres a connection. Reporting live in Pleasant Hill, kbob redell, today in the bay. Thank you very much, bob. 6 02. San jose state water polo player accused of assaulting two fellow students is no longer in the country. Were told the school and San Jose Police have been investigating these accusations since the report first came in a month ago. The crime allegedly happened at an offcampus party over the labor day weekend. The university is not releasing the name of the male water polo player accused because hes not arrested or charged. A spokesperson told nbc bay area the player is an international student. Today in the bays kris sanchez is at san jose state this morning gathering new information. Shell have reaction from students wondering why theyre now just finding out about this. Its all coming up at 6 30. The department of justice will announce the findings into the San Francisco police department. The doj launched the review following the Police Shooting of mario woods in the bayview district. The review concludes San Francisco Police Officers focus too often on people of color, especially when it comes to the use of force. The report also recommends using tasers, something the sfpd does not do now and criticizes the police union for influencing too many decisions within the department. Meanwhile the city is still searching for a new police chief. There are reports the selection may be announced this week. The examiner says the Police Commission will narrow choices down to three or five finalists during a closed door session tonight. Mayor ed lee would then choose a permanent chief from that short list. At 6 04, this just in, a Police Canine back at home after being stabbed. The suspect was eventually shot and killed by police in concord. It all started yesterday afternoon as police were investigating a stabbing on crawford avenue. Chris eventually found the suspect half naked in someones back yard. Thats when officers released a canine named jelle to capture the suspect. The suspect fought back and allegedly stabbed the dog with gardening shears. Residents say theyre stunned this happened in their neighborhood. I was in my living room in my house, and when i saw somebody run into my back yard, and i was like who is that . It happened so fast. The dog is expected to be okay after undergoing surgery last night. Police have not released the identity of the suspect. 6 05. A 57yearold south San Francisco man is in jail for an alleged sexual relationship with a teenager who was his coworker at safe way. Michael Anthony Lopez was arrested yesterday at the Grocery Store in burlingame. The alleged victim is just 16. Her mother turned lopez in to authorities. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to contact them. A bizarre discovery in the east bay. Take a look. A little girls abandoned bike and clothing found next to a reservoir in livermore. The items were discovered monday at the Bethany Reservoir at the edge of a boat dock. Sheriffs officers even send divers into the lake but found no signs of a child. Theyre still understandably concerned. There have been no reports of a missing girl. Hope that turns out well. An update for you on that boat that capsized saturday in the San Francisco bay. This chaotic rescue happened on camera. Divers plugged underwater fuel leaks on the 34foot boat under water as they get ready to raise it. Police also released a photo of the boat sitting upright on the bottom of the bay in the center below the green area. Experts say the boat might have sunk because it was overloaded. Theyll know more when they get it back to the surface and examine it. Thanks to work done in the bay area, one strand of hair may soon be all these needed to identify and convict criminals. Scientists are working on perfecting dna fingerprinting for a single strand of hair. The technique separates and analyzes the proteins found in the hair which can then be linked to one specific person worldwide. If we find that hair at a crime scene and we compare it to a hair from a suspect, if those patterns match, then we can say within a statistical probability about one in a million right now, that that hair came from that person. Scientists say once the technique is perfected, its probability will increase to about one in ten billion, more than the earths population. Because hair breaks down so slowly, potential dna evidence could last hundreds of years. Amazon customers may have more access to music. San jose state water polo player is accused of sexually assaulting two fellow students more than a month ago. In that time students say they were not notified. Now weve learned the attacker allegedly left the country. Today in the bays kris sanchez live at san jose state university. How did this happen . Know one was notified. Although he wasnt charged. Reporter he was not charged, laura, not arrested. Because he was an international student, he was free to go home because there were no charges pending against him. Students very frustrated they have not learned about this until now. Now that freshman water polo player was able to leave the country despite that alleged sexual assault. Two women over the labor day weekend. The University Spokesman tells us he was immediately identified and interviewed by San Jose Police and University Police which is the reason why the university gives that they didnt notify students of the alleged sexual assaults nearly a month ago. The two women say they were assaulted by that water polo player who is an international student. They are also students here at san jose state themselves. We dont know exactly where this off campus party was and where these alleged assaults happen. We do know they happened the weekend of labor day weekend. That would be between september 3rd and september 5th. We know the Water Polo Team was, in fact, in town that weekend. They played a match on that saturday in santa clara. This is video of the game posted on the universitys website. I feel like the school has failed, failed to notify us. Its concerning. We should have been notified from day one. If you hear about it, you stay more on guard knowing these kind of things are happening around here. I would have felt safer. Reporter the university is not releasing the name of the student because he hasnt been charged. But there was 19 water polo players on the mens 2016 roster, only three are International Students who are also freshmen. Only one is missing a photo, so weve deduced who we believe that person is. We will not identify him until hes charged. Santa clara County District attorney is still weighing whether or not to file charges. If that student chooses to return, hes not allowed on campus, not a allowed on any of the teams activities, and it remains to be seen whether or not the santa clara County District attorney can compel him to return to the country if they do, in fact, file charges. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay,. Today the federal government will release findings following a long review of the San Francisco police department. This was all called on by members of the community as well as city officials who want the department of justice to look into the use of force policy with sfpd. They were put into the spotlight following a number of deadly officerinvolved shootings. Thats the cell phone video weve seen involving stabbing suspect mario woods who was shot and killed by Police Officers just last year. I want to point this out. This investigation is voluntary and will be done by the Departments Community Oriented Police services division. Its important to note that because whatever recommendations we hear at todays News Conference will not end in any sort of Court Monitored settlement for the department. Much different from what we sea in ferguson, missouri. The Justice Department held a Public Meeting in february regarding this investigation. Here they are explaining what it will entail. Policies, procedures, we interview people both on the department, we bring in experts to drill down, review data. We go on ridealongs, training, hiring, a very rigorous process. Reporter since this investigation launched in february, sfpd has replaced its police chief going from former chief greg suhr. Officer zink was killed on i80 late last month when his motorcycle crashed into a truck. He was on his way to work at the time. Todays celebration of his life will be held at the Fathers House church in vacaville beginning at 11 00 this morning. Officer skrzink had seven child. Carol brown was shot in the hip and the arm in front of her orinda home last month by two masked men. She says the suspects were trying to rob her husband and he was pistol whipped. Brown did not want to show her face on camera but shares how close she came to losing her life. I was literally an inch away from having that bullet penetrate my lunges, and i would have been dead immediately. Yesterday the contra County District Attorneys Office charged six men in connection with a series of home invasions and string of armed robberies. They believe two of those suspects also attacked brown and her husband. Las vegas is making big moves to get the raiders in a battle. Lawmakers approved 750 million in public money for a new stadium. That stadium would be used the lure the raiders to las vegas. The bill now heads to the nevada state assembly. Even if this bill is ultimately okayed, the nfl will still have to approve the move. Tracie, the study finds parents at fault as well. Reporter it says parents are on their phones more than the kids are when theyre driving, theyre speeding as much as teenagers, not setting a good kpa at all. Aaa interviewed driving instructors and got this information in a study just released this mornings. They found that the three deadliest mistakes that teen drivers are making are, and well start from the bottom, distracted driving, as you might imagine, on cell phone, fiddling with something in the car, even distracted by other teens in the car. Thats one of the reasons why graduated licensing doesnt allow teens in the car for a while. Speeding was one of the factors. The biggest factor they found was poor visual scanning. In other words, theyve got tunnel vision looking at whats ahead of them on the road but not necessarily whats going on around them as theyre driving. That sometimes has led to many of the 14,000 accidents that aaa noted over the past five years. Fixing those things, but also getting parents to be a better example. Spending more time practicing with their teens and really talking with teens about safe driving with all things they suggest to make the roads safer for our youngest drivers on the road. A dropoff into san jose. The totals in purple and red in the north bay and east bay hills could approach up to three inches, maybe three to five inches in northern Sonoma County with the first storm. Then well get another storm in for the second half of the weekend. Moisture from the typhoon in the western pacific gets absorbed. It tracks across the pacific, western pacific by now. By saturday that energy gets absorbed into the second storm that will be picking up as we head into saturday, one we think will bring more wind and rough surf on the coast. Another round of rain for the midpoint of the weekend. Friday, everything begins to change with the wind, rain and big surf on the coast. Probably lingering showers into monday. So four days with the weather making big impacts around the bay area and the sierra. Unfortunately snow levels closer to 9,000 feet. This wednesday kind of like monday and tuesday, a lighter volume around the bay. But the trivalley, we have a couple of issues. It looks like the crash had one lane blocked, but that may have cleared as fire crews and chp moved everything over to the right shoulder. Traffic flowing lighter toward the Castro Valley y, 880 still slow, a fender bender near the san mateo bridge where things are slowing for the 84, du dumbarton and the san mateo bridge. Westbound good volume of traffic causing more slowing. Its an issue of more volume, no incidents on the span. It may be one of dozens of suspicious fires popping up in the east bay. Today in the bays bob redell is live there as investigators look into whats causing the fires. Bob . Reporter good morning, laura and scott. The most recent fire taking place just a little before 9 30 last night. This is the east bay mud trail in Pleasant Hill. A battalion chief with the Contra Costa County Fire Department telling us theyre concerned because this is at least the 12th fire to have been set on popular walking trails here in Pleasant Hill over the past couple of months. Again, this trail running up against a bunch of homes against oak park boulevard and 680 in Pleasant Hill. Witnesses tell the Fire Department they did hear people out here around the time the fire was set. The firefighters were able to put it out before it spread and caused any damage. Its more than 30 fires that have been set along the iron horse trail. This is in the neighboring city of concord. A fire investigator has already declared those fires to be arson. Not clear if the fires in concord are related to the ones here in Pleasant Hill. Live in Pleasant Hill, bob redell, today in the bay. We just learned a police dog is back ot home this morning after he was stabbed. The suspect was eventually shot and killed by police in concord. It happened yesterday afternoon as police were investigating a stabbing on crawford avenue. Police eventually found the suspect in someones back yard. Thats when officers released the dog named jelle to capture the suspect. The suspect fought back, allegedly stabbed the dog with gardening shears. Police havent released the identity of the suspect.
