We want to report some furloughed workers are back on the job. They are with the centers for Disease Control and prevention. Theyre back on the job. Theyre still not being paid but theyre brought back in because of a salmonella outbreak linked to chicken. First, todays top story that Andrea Mitchell broke. It is a story of military families caught in the middle of the political infighting. This is the live look at Dover Air Force base where behind those gates, family members are gathering for a somber ceremony as they collect their loved ones remains. It is happening about 100 miles way from washington where the outrage over the lack of death benefits for the families is one of the most embarrassing points of the Government Shutdown. We just learned that secretary of defense chuck hagel will be there as well. Lets go to Andrea Mitchell with the latest. Good morning. Reporter good morning. As the solemn ceremony takes place, on capitol hill, the story sparked outrage from lawmakers who vow to fix the now a private charity has stepped in to do what the government did not do. Take care of families of Fallen Service members. At Dover Air Force base, a solemn ceremony to mark the return of Service Members killed last week in afghanistan. Some of the families in dover paying for the flights. They did not get emergency beth benefits because of the shutdown. 100,000 to be paid within 36 hours of a death to help pay costs. The charity has stepped in to take place of the u. S. Government. Im hopeful this is a temporary measure. We are in it for as long as we need to be. Reporter the mother of Fallen Service member marine Lance Corporal jeremiah collins. For the sacrifices, i dont understand why this is a benefit that is withheld. Reporter another of the fallen, special agent joseph peters, a 24yearold officer from springfield, missouri. Serving in afghanistan after two tours in iraq. The father of a 20monthold son. His wife issued this statement. It is upsetting because my husband died for his country and my family is left to worry. My husband said if something happened to him, we would be taken care of. On capitol hill on tuesday, outrage from lawmakers. Speaker john boehner will introduce a bill today to reintroduce the benefit today. The house will act on this. Reporter gop senators john mccain and Lindsey Graham are outraged. Shouldnt we as a body, democrat and republican, shouldnt we be embarrassed about this . Your government let you down at the time of your need. Reporter family members are angry and hurt by the stalemate. The senate and white house have rejected other piecemeal bills to fix shutdown problems, this is one that is hard to reject. Savannah and matt. Thank you, andrea. We have chuck todd the Political Correspondent with more. Good morning, matt. We hear lawmakers using words like embarrassment and shame over the emergency death benefits. Is it possible that shame might force real action on the shutdown . Id like to think it would actually force a resolution on the larger issue. I think what is more likely is what andrea outlined. You will see the house act on this bill. One thing the senate and house have done while they rejected the idea of little bills like this to reopen parts of the government, anything that has had to do with the military and anybody fighting overseas, that, the president has done. He signed the paycheck law. I would be shocked if this did not immediately get to the president s desk perhaps before the close of business. Lets look at the bigger picture. We have been talking about defunding or delaying obama care. We are segueing into a heated debate over raising the debt ceiling. The tea party seems very much dug in here. Both sides seem dug in. Yet john mccain had this to say on tuesday. Let me play it for you. How is this going to end . We know how its going to end. We know how its going to end. Sooner or later the government will resume its function. Sooner or later we will raise the debt limit. The question is how do we get there . Thats a very realistic comment from a guy thats seen his share of battles. Can that mindset prevail. Reporter i dont know and if john mccain could bring any other republicans with him beyond a handful maybe there would be a resolution or we wouldnt have even been in this place in the first place but thats not where the Republican Party is today. Youre right, the tea party side of this is dug in. Now, there was a lot of heated rhetoric yesterday but behind the scenes you see shifts, john boehner is no longer talking about health care. The issue isnt there. Paul ryan who was the republican Vice President ial candidate, the House Republicans chief budget guy, he has an oped today that barely touches this issue. If you look and wonder is there quote unquote good news to find out what the end game is, there is. House republicans seem to be dropping the health care thing. The question is whether the Tea Party Folks will be okay with that. I dont think they will but it does feel like the leadership of the Republican Party is trying to get away from it. If they do, then well actually see an end game. Quickly before i let you go, the president expected to announce janet yellen today to replace ben bernanke. We have the latest from gabe gutierrez. Reporter some people have ended up in the hospital. That is raising questions whether the government could be doing more to stop the outbreak in it wasnt partially shutdown. Its back to work this morning for some furloughed cdc workers on the job battling a salmonella outbreak that involves seven strains. Some appear to be resistant to antibiotics. Since july, 278 cases in 18 states. Doctors say the outbreak is spreading quickly. A lot of this is sends people to the er. Reporter the u. S. Da traced to raw chicken by foster farms in california. It has one of these three inspection numbers. Donnie chance is worried. Ill stop buying chicken. Reporter the Poultry Company says the products are safe to eat if fully cooked. About 42 of patients have been hospitalized. The illness is reported by cdc so far may be the tip of the iceberg. Gabe gutierrez, thank you. There is a surprising arrest this morning in the case of the motorcycle gang that attacked a man driving an suv here in new york. This time is Undercover Police officer facing charges. We have nbcs Stephanie Gosk with more. Good morning, matt. This undercover officer came forward three days to officials. He first told officers he never got involved in the altercation. After the video appeared showing his role. The bikers of the family had no idea as the confrontation grew tense and violent. A new york city undercover detective was there the whole time. Moments after a biker attacked alex liens drivers side with a helmet, the video shows the detective joined in and smashed the rear window. The Police Sources say he took off on his bike as lien was pulled from the car and did not take part in the beating. The 32yearold Police Officer now faces charges of riot and criminal mischief. His undercover operation at the nypd says is deeply sensitive is over. Before the new video was uncovered, the head of the Detectives Union had concerns it took three days for the detective to come forward and admit he was there. Why did it take him so long to step up . For the missing womans family, it doesnt make sense. Authorities were supposed to have scoured the area for clues. Now they are investigating a mysterious death. For the family of lynne spaulding, who disappeared from the hospital two weeks ago, it brings anguish and questions. Her family and friends are distraught. Reporter the 57yearold disappeared on september 21st. In the hospital for just two days, she was being treated for an infection. Nurses checking her every 15 minutes. Until one check when she was gone. How could someone be in a hospital under medical supervision and leave their room unnoticed . Reporter spaulding was frail and on medication and possibly confused when she vanished. The hospital launched an investigation at the time and security cameras could not confirm she left the hospital. Her family blanketed the area with missing posters and pictures of the spunky british native who lived in San Francisco for years. Launching a Facebook Page. Find lynne. The post, sfgh has some questions to answer at the least. Nobody checked stairwells . So we are expecting some time of identification possibly later on today. The hospital says it is cooperating with authorities. One thing to note, natalie, those were emergency exit stairwells, they should have had alarms on the doors. Emergency crews at the scene of a fire in oklahoma after a natural gas line exploded sending flames shooting in the air. It happened near the kansas border. This is amateur video shot minutes after the explosion. Several homes had to be evacuated. No one was injured and no property damaged. Some firefighters in brussels have come up with a unique way to protest budget cuts. After the cuts were announced, firefighters set up outside the Prime Ministers Office and sprayed water and foam at Police Officers who were guarding the government buildings. This morning the 9yearolds father tells nbc news he tried to get help for his sons behavior problems and now he wants his son back home but sources tell us he is still in las vegas in Child Protective Services custody and theres no indication yet of when hell be flying back here to the minneapolis airport. The same week he snuck on to a flight to las vegas, Authorities Say the 9yearold boy stole a 30foot delivery truck in minneapolis before slamming it into a parked suv and crashing it into a police cruiser. At a local water park, sources close to the investigation say he would sneak in by joining big families. They say Child Protection services had been looking in on him since december. When he turned up in las vegas, his father who doesnt want his name used told nbc news by phone he thought his son was at a friends house. I take full responsibility of my actions. I miss my son. I want my son to come home. Reporter the family spokesman said the boys parents struggled with his behavior. You know, they were frustrated and looking for help. Reporter this morning, were also learning more about the boys mysterious trip. At the tsa checkpoint he got in between a family, similar to the reported water park trick. He then got a bin and removed his shoes even though children his age arent required too. Delta airlines is investigating the biggest mystery, how he got on to the plane. Sources say security video shows him talking to a gate agent that turned away to talk to someone else. Shortly after the three hour 20 minute flight took off they noticed him because he was sitting in a row by himself. No unaccompanied minors were listed on the flight. They approached him and after he offered various explanations they radioed ahead to have authorities meet the plane. Sources say that the boys mother works here at the airport in a retail shop but theres no indication that she played any role in what he did and we may get a look at what he did when the airport releases security tapes as early as today. She was the daughter of a mayor, the wife of an ambassador and mother of nine children including the president , ambassadors and the woman that started the Special Olympics and she was also my grandmother. I think of grandmothers all over the world but when i think of the word grandma, i think of my grandmother. When people think of the kennedys they think of the kennedy men but the kennedy women are strong women. That started with grandma. As i said to my children, their time and their talent and their Financial Resources were not for their own particular benefit but were to be used to help other people. Reporter she was the lynch pin in our large and extended family. She was the history, she was the face, she was the glue. She set the tone for all of us. She was the First Political strategist in the family. She was deeply involved in her sons races. Its a great pleasure to introduce my son robert kennedy. Reporter she wasnt a fuzzy grandma that cooked. She was always dressed to the nines. Super smart, super well educated, super curious and pretty strict. On sundays we would talk about the gospel. My brother and i the reason she never introduced any of us before is because we never go on the same platform with her. We couldnt possibly compete with that. Reporter when she walked in the room everybody stood up. When she spoke everybody was quite. Her story, like every woman or mans story is complicated. Its never black or white. Its grey. So she talked always about how blessed her life was and she talked about how difficult it was to lose children but that she always turned to god. You have faith. You know every day that you are doing the will of god that he will not give you a cross any heavier than you can bear. Reporter much has been written about my grandparents relationship and she always saw it as a love story. I was very much in love. Reporter i wanted to read you the letter. Its from my grandfather to my grandmother and he says i want you to know that going away on trips like this makes me realize just how little anything amounts except you. As years go on i love you more than anything in the world. She always said if people ask me would i liked to have been the president to mother of the president , i would always have choosed to be the mother of the president. She thought there was great power in motherhood and she took it seriously. When you hold your baby in your arms the first time and you think of all the things you can say and do to influence him, its a tremendous responsibility. What you do with him and for him can influence not only him but everyone he meets. Not for a day, a month, a year, but for time and for eternity. Reporter its my grandmothers photo album and its really her life through photos that she kept and the history of her life and i think she is a woman worth admiring. She is inspirational. She is worth reading about. She is worth listening to because she was one heck of a woman. And i have to thank my cousin Caroline Kennedy for putting this book together in conjunction with the kennedy library. The proceeds benefit it and the Kennedy Foundation which works on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities. Its a great book to share with your family. Get to thinking about the role of your grandmother or your grandparents in your life. Its really awesome. We have said these photos are never before seen some of them. Have you seen them . Ive seen some of them but not all of them. I have seen a lot of photos of my family over the years. What i like about this is you say your grandmother wasnt the fuzzy cuddle type. She was powerful but her favorite role was that of mother. Yeah and she really emphasized how powerful that is. I think thats a great thing for women to remember every day of our lives, those of us who are blessed to be mothers and fathers as well, thats the most important job we do because she always stressed that what you put in to that person can Effect People every single day of that persons life. Briet has gone through quite a transformation. Well, i dared to make her in her 50s. I thought, you know what, when i wrote the first bridget, the idea of this 30something single woman was still a spinster going to end up dying alone and being eaten by a dog and i thought the same thing is going on with the 50something woman. She has a tight perm and a shopping bag. Shes past her sell by date. All the stereotypes arent reflecting whats really happening. Women are what used to be called middle aged and still have it going on. And bridget may still have it going on but its who she has it going on with which may have fans in a frenzy. Read about it. Because this book is not about cases. This book is about lessons and i did talk about the lessons. And the lesson you say about this is not let your emotions control you. Thats correct. Now if you want to deal with the facts or the nonfacts of the case youll have to deal with that in the book i did on that ten years ago. What i dealt with was even though i believed her and represented what i believe you don make it personal. I may believe youre wrong but to get into name calling and degrading you is something you have to say wait a minute thats not going to help the cause. And the anlage you use in this book is what you say is the way you dealt with Trayvon Martin is that you did not make that personal. You made it about the facts. I did not demonize them. I dealt with the facts. I never went to zimmermans trial. It was not about zimmerman. It was about pursuing the Justice System to operate. Based on the fact that people have strong opinions about you one way or another, do you think youre a double edged sword when you get involved in a case these days . Yes but some double edged swords will r needed if youre going to draw the kind of attention you need. You need someone that can go in that will make people say we have to Pay Attention to that and you know going in that its going to be a large segment against you and a large for you but if someone doesnt go in the victim will not be heard at all. We started a controlled fire here over our stove top but kitchen fires are the most common type of fires. What do we do in this situation . The first thing is if you can safely protect yourself and have the cover nearby to slide it across the pan and it will extinguish the fire. Its quick and easy and safe and if you cant do that successfully get out of the house. People think about water and baking soda and you say either of those in this case. Water can increase the intensity. Baking soda you have to go right over the flame to poor it. Its dangerous. The cover is the best option. Now it grows past the stove, whats the move. The fire extinguishers here. Theyre designed for certain types of hazards within your home. The smaller one is great for the kitchen. So under a sink or Something Like that. Under the sink but have it where its accessible because you want to get to it right away when theres a fire. Using an extinguisher remember pass, pull the handle, spray at the base of the fire. Once you use it its done. Its done. Get out of the space and if the extinguisher doesnt work back out of the space right away. The next thing is an escape ladder. What kind of person should have this. Escape ladders are good for ensuring if you need to get from your bedroom or second floor to a lower level so its good for families but you have to remember its kind of an unstable platform to climb on and if you have Young Children it may not be something easy for them to do but it hangs over the window, you back out and climb down. Good in the kids rooms. Should have one but be careful, right . Be careful and have an escape plan for your family. And practice that plan as well. Practice as well. Ill sit here. Lets say the car is on fire and i am stuck in the car, seat belt is not coming off. What do i do . Well, if youre in the car its on fire and you cant get out. If you can pull the seat belt tight, ill show you with a would happen is you can take the seat belt cutter and take and pull the belt and then you pull this down and you can see what happens. Although i spoke the language and have medical insurance it was very difficult kurfor me. I always thought what do women do when they dont speak the language or have medical insurance . That why i established healing together. Our mission is to help medically underserved women when it comes to Breast Cancer. Were healing together because we take women in the community that do not have insurance, that need a free mammogram, we take them into the hospitals that provide those programs for free. I dont have an office. My office is really the hospital setting or coffee shops in the community. And if they dont speak english, what i do is i accompany them to the doctors appointments and i prepare them for that visit. I tell them the questions in spanish, let they know what your fears are and symptoms are and what you want to know about the process. She can kind of get under what the issue is and ask follow up questions and really get to you know what the real problem is here. So its huge for all of us. Especially the patient safety. She not only serves to interpret what theyre saying accurately, but she teaches me about the cultural implications that may impact a womans ability to receive her treatment or her care. We could be standing here nude with these puppies, right . These are all shelter dogs. The first one, vaccines. How soon do you get your puppy vaccinated . Starting about 6 to 8 weeks youll have your first visit with your veterinarian and go back every three to four weeks for a booster, okay .
