Commuter traffic expected to roll through one part of the south bay a lot faster now that a new flyover ramp is open. Im robert honda live in san jose. Coming up, some of the changes that have many drivers happy and a little concerned. Good evening. Im meteorologist jeff ranieri. Were tracking windy weather across the bay area also a few showers off to the north. Well let you know if youll get any of this activity moving your way in just a few minutes. Not going very fast and in some cases not at all. We continue to follow a very challenging evening commute in the smb. A major freeway interchange has been shut down for five hours because of police activity. Youre looking at a live picture over the 101 180, 680 interchange where they all converge. Traffic backed up for miles upon miles for miles, because someone is sitting on one of the overramps and had been there since 1 00 in the afternoon. Its causing major traffic headaches. Police have the area blocked off and theyre dealing with it but traffic is a mess. Were going to continue to cover this. Stay with us. You can also check it out online at nbcbayarea. Com. A 63 million makeover opened up today at one of the bay areas most congested traffic interchanges. A new traffic flyover is designed to clear up the jams in san jose where interchanges. 280 and 880 used to share lanes of people heading to Shopping Centers on Stevens Creek boulevard. Nbc bay areas robert honda joins us near the flyover to show us how drivers are dealing with the changes. Looks pretty good behind you, robert. Thats right. The northbound commute on 280 is usually a lot lighter than it is in the morning, and that gives you a clearer view of the flyover ramp right behind me. As you can see, the two ramps are on the far right side of the road, which actually wasnt the case before and it is just one of the many changes that will require some driver adjustments. The old interchange was around for about 50 years, so its not too surprising the changes, even improvements, will take some getting used to. The longawaiting flyover ramp opened at 5 00 a. M. This morning and now northbound 280 commuters can get on to northbound 880 without sharing a ramp and lanes with drivers headed to Stevens Creek boulevard and presumably west field valley fair and santana row Shopping Centers. I think it would ease the congestion. But i still dont like it. I dont feel comfortable with many of the changes that are happening. Reporter in fact we saw a few people who seemed to be having trouble adjusting. According to the motorcycle officer, this driver made an illegal turn at the intersection and some drivers merging on to 280 norbertth will still encounter people trying to get on to the new ramp. Theres definitely plenty of signage that needs to be reviewed and looked at when youre going through this area. Please be cautious. People will have to get used to the area. Reporter but most drivers we talk to say its still better than sharing lanes. I think its pretty dangerous. Theres a lot of traffic and a lot of commotion. Reporter pretty happy about this then . Yeah pretty excited. Reporter well it will get more exciting for those excited by the change. Now, theres still some work to be done including some widening of Stevens Creek boulevard, but it is all expected to be done in about a month, with a big public celebration planned for that time.
