And it kind of brings to mind how much he endured physically, so that he can write this book. I had the privilege of meeting paul and lucy in 2014 while undergoing blood tests. He talked about wrestling with how to live his life with a terminal illness, and not knowing when he would die. My first thought is that id be dead within the first thing. I said to lucy remarry and restart her life. It felt loving. Like you just got terrible news and the first thing youre saying is about my life . They decided to have a baby during this time. I knew a child would bring joy and i couldnt picture to see lucy husbandless and childless after i died. He came into a hospital to see katie born. She was fourth on the 4th of july, 2014. Paul died eight months later, at age 37. He enjoyed every second with his little girl. Pauls death has been a real struggle for lucy. The emotions and disorientation is very striking. So its been really difficult. The book is dedicated to little katie, with words that pierce the heart. You filled a dying mans days with joy unknown to me. The main thing is how much he loved her. How important she was to him. I want her to know that. And she will.
