A few people starting to come out to check things out. Overall, here in this city, the crowds just didnt show up. They were expecting 100,000 people, but everyone we talked to has said this is actually the least busy weekend they have seen here in years. So they dont know if its the weather that scared people off or the talk of all the crowds, but some of the hotels are slashing their prices over the weekend, trying to encourage people to come out to the coast to witness this eclipse. The oregon coast is beautiful no matter whats going on, so hopefully theyll enjoy that. It looks soupy behind you. Thanks so much. Here, alexis, as you covered on the traffic impact here today, but we want to start with you, mike, because where do we have to go to see this . The thats the tricky part because its getting worse. I think just in time, the south bay clears out just in time. But notice, places like santa cruz, not so much. It will be partly sunny on the peninsula and getting cloudier as you head up towards millbrae. Notice the coast completely socked in. I think San Francisco will be socked in at 10 15. You may see a little bit of the end of the eclipse as we get towards 11 30. Nama valley clearing out by 10 15. Still parts around santa rosa and petaluma possibly partly sunny there. You will see the end of the eclipse along the east bay shore at 10 15. Pretty cloudy all the way down to about hayward, possibly union city. South of that, it should be clear. And then our inland east bay neighborhoods will be clearing out as we head towards 10 15. You should see the 10 15 to 11 30 timeframe completely clear. You will definitely see the back half of it. Its going to be hard for any of us to see the beginning of the eclipse. I dont think any of us will. I have some pretty obvious driving tips here if youre going to be out and about today, whether youre trying to see the eclipse or trying to go about your normal routine. We have a partial eclipse in the bay area from 9 00 to 11 30. This should be obviouattention. Do not attempt to watch the eclipse while youre driving. We think distracted driving will be an issue across the country. You want to be careful. The maximum eclipse about 10 15. Its not going to be totally dark, but it will be darker. And all day today, just be on the lookout for distracted drivers. Use caution, and distracted pedestrians. If youre on surface streets, a lot of folks not paying attention to where theyre walking. San Francisco Police aric looking for six rifles stolen from a car parked on leyland avenue and visitation valley. The owner was in the process of moving, and the theft was discovered yesterday morning. Police have not have where in the car the guns were stored. This is an unusual ocean rescue to be sure. It looks like a real deer, but you see its not. Police proesed this video of a rescue of uncle buck. The deer sculpture had been stolen, it was found floating in the ocean, caught in kelp. And his owner says the sculpture is worth 8,000. Really . Yes. It seems like she paid at least 7,899 too much. It was secured by chains and then someone caught them. Police are still searching for that person. Its time to ask finney. Bruce has a question about buying or renting your home. He spoke to us at our ask finney event. I was wondering if its better over the long term to rent a house to live it in or to buy a house. It seems like renting you let someone else take the Maintenance Cost and you can change anytime you want. You own a house, youre stuck for life with the Maintenance Costs and it takes forever to pay it off. Bruce, you can tell, you really have been thinking about this. You bring up a good point. In the short term, youre wright. The general rule of thumb then is dont buy unless you plan to live in your new home for two to three years. Now, the problem with renting longterm is that prices can go up. When you buy, you lock in the cost for years to come. And here in the bay area, that is a huge benefit. Now, many renters get priced out of the market here, and theyre forced to move. Homeowners, if they have a 30year mortgage, generally get to stay right where they are. Good luck. If you have a question, report it on your smartphone or tablet, share it on social media with the askfinney. You may see your question answered right here. I know a lot of you are waking up wondering what is that weather going to be like. Many of you are at workory school when the eclipse is going to happen. Youre getting the answer behind us. A lot of disappointment today becuse i dont think any of us outside of maybe the napa valley will see the beginning of the eclipse. A lot of us will see the middle or the where we get to 75 towards the end of the eclipse. But the beginning of it, you have to be up. Look at this, the marine layer keeps getting taller and taller. Its up to 2600 feet. You can barely see the sunrise from mt. Tamalpais. Morning sunshine eclipsed for many of us today. Low clouds tonight. Fog possible and a slow warming through the week. We have the Small Craft Advisory, 1 00 to 9 00, very breezy in the areas in yellow. I overlaid the cloud cover on the map. This is at 10 15 in the morning. You can see the south bay does clear out for the most part by 10 15. Mostly sunny there. Some of that clearing will make it up to palo alto, possibly redwood city. North of there, pretty cloudy at 10 15, especially along the coast. San francisco, very cloudy at 10 15. Up in the north bay, outside of nappy and calistoga, pretty cloudy at 10 15. Along the east bay shore, pretty cloudy all the way down to hayward, san leandro. South of that, youll see some breaks in the cloud cover. By 10 15, the neighborhoods will be clearing out and should be pretty sunny. Heres my accuweather sevenday forecast. Temperatures a little warmer tuesday, Holding Steady wednesday, thursday. Summer warmth back, but nothing extreme. We have one new issue in the east bay, so lets take you to oakland, southbound 880, a disabled vehicle blocking the far left lean just before you get to high street. A pretty decent backup there from the lake merritt area on down. Stick to 580 if youre not in a big rig. Thats a better bet. Heres a look at the cloud cover, the fog we have out there this morning. San mateo bridge, westbound 92, still doing okay. We definitely have some stop and go traffic, but no blocking issues for you. A quick check of the drive time slowly improving westbound 80 between vacaville and cordelia, where we had a major crash this morning. Youre down to 34 minutes. Normally, thats about 26 minutes. Still in the red, but its starting to bounce back. Thanks. Thanks. Were were back at 6 54. Here are seven things you should know. Number one, crews are looking for ten american sailors after a Navy Destroyer uss mccain collided with a merchant ship. Five others were hurt. That destroyer sustained significant damage. Number two, grief counselors will be on hand at oakland Skyline High School as they mourn the firefighter shot and killed in san jose. 30yearold jake walter graduated from skyline. Number three, just a little over three hours away from seeing a partial Solar Eclipse here in the bay area. It will start at 9 01 and peak at 10 15 with 75 of the sun blocked. The eclipse will be over at 11 37 this morning and we keep saying it, but it bears repeating, do not look directly at the eclipse. Up fortunately, wirth wise, its going to be cloudy just about everywhere when the eclipse begins. The east bay and south bay will clear out once we hit the 10 15 timeframe for the totality or you have to be above about 2600 feet. Number five, our Biggest Issue on the roads today was a crash between 5 00 and 6 00 a. M. In the fairfield area. Thats long gone at this point. Still trying to bounce back. 16, 24 miles per hour, so slowly, those speeds starting to pick up. Number six, if you dont have those coveted eclipse glasses, we have an alternative. Our very own drew tuma has put together a video on how to make your own viewer with stuff you probably have around theous. That video and lots of other coverage is at abcsevennews. Com. Chris Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will be eclipsed by chocolaty glaze. Chocolately, not chocolate. Theyre going dark to celebrate the eclipse, and natasha and i say dont do it. We like the glaze. I dont like that chocolate. I just like a regular glazed doughnut. True story. Here in a lot of the bay area, you might as well have regular glazed because youre not going to see the eclipse anyway.
