It looks like business as usual the tesoro refinery but its not, now that the facilitys Union Workers are technically on strike. We havent had a strike since 1980, yeah we strike as a last resort. Reporter jim payne is with the United Steelworkers Union five which represents 425 employees the at tesoro talks between the company and the union broke down over the weekend over several issues including worker fatigue. If a facility well staffed, fatigues not that much of an issue, if youre running with you know levels that becomes a problem. Reporter last february, two workers were injured during a chemical spill. Tesoro initially denied entry at the u. S. Chemical safety board investigators but then relented. A month later, there was another spill and one more worker injured. Compassion is kind of like empathy, put yourself in another persons place. Like to say in our class to put yourself in another persons shoes. Reporter every monday at 2 00 students at brett hart elementary spent an hour on social Emotional Learning. What they discuss here is applied in every situation at school and at home. If we give kids language to engage in conflict resolution, we feel like they are much better as a result in settings like recess and the cafeteria. Reporter studies have also shown that these kinds of programs help a child feel supported by their classmates and teachers. That sense of selfworth often translates into academic success. It also lowers things like truancy rates. It lowers aggression. Reporter some School Districts grade their students on their level of compassion and even gratitude. Eight School Districts in california including San Francisco unified want the federal government to hold them accountable not only for their academic outcome but for their social and motional teachings. Sf unified is still figuring out what back if doors will be used to measure their level of success.
