And we have gray skies in hayward right here in santa cruz, where its 58, mid 70s, later on 59 in oakland. It is the most powerful earthquake to hit the african country in more than a century. Abc News ReporterTom Soufi Burridge has the latest. This morning. A desperate search now underway after the deadliest earthquake in morocco in more than 60 years. Rescuers in remote mountainous areas in a race against time digging through the destruction for signs of life, working on top of now flattened concrete walls, searching for people trapped beneath many buildings here made from basic materials stand little chance against powerful tremors. Rocks littered mountain roads hampering rescue efforts with moroccos military deployed to help. In some villages, they are already burying the dead. Morocco beginning three days of national mourning. So far, more than 2000 people confirmed killed with a similar number injured, according to moroccan officials. But amid such widespread devastation in hard to reach areas, the true number of missing and dead is still not clear. The epicenter of the 6. 8 magnitude quake in the high atlas mountains, about 40 miles south of marrakesh, an ancient city packed full of tourists. One woman capturing that moment. And the frightening force. Im really scared. Violently shaking a restaurant. People running out of buildings with panic on the streets as the earth shook. Then the aftermath with buildings destroyed. And this mosque in marrakesh badly damaged and just outside the city. Furniture and belongings covering the streets are buried underneath the destruction in moroccos king mohammed, promising his officials will accelerate the rescue operation and evacuations, as well as addressing the supply of Drinking Water and food, tents and blankets to affected areas. Us aid saying it will send a small team of disaster experts to assess the situation and work with morocco to identify unmet humanitarian needs and countless homes that are Still Standing across this region are now not safe. In marrakesh, we found people spending a second night out on the streets. Well, you can see how this square is packed full of people. There are elderly. There are Young Children here in tire families bedding down for the night because they dont feel safe inside their badly damaged buildings. And they fear there could be aftershocks. And youre scared of aftershocks . Yeah kaoutar and her family not sure when they will return home. The community has come together, she tells me. Were just hoping there wont be another quake. Yeah, just devastating. That was abcs Tom Soufi Burridge reporting the impact, of course , is felt here in the bay area to local moroccan families are hoping to raise money to help their loved ones and those in need. Abc seven News Reporter ansar hassan tells us their story. La san luis spent much of the day going through videos that his family sent from morocco. You can see the kids, elderly people losing their houses. Theyre just sitting, you know, outside with no homes, no shelters. Luis wife and father are from villages in the atlas mountains, hit by the massive 6. 8 earthquake on friday night, some 45 miles south of the popular tourist city of marrakesh. More than 2000 people are dead. Thousands more are injured. Luis still doesnt know how many family members he lost. One member of my wifes family, i mean, her house leveled to the ground and they were spending two nights now, so far, just in the streets, his relatives sent videos showing big boulders that crashed onto the main roads, in some cases complete, shutting off smaller villages. Luis san othman says he cant sleep. Its like crazy for me to process and even imagine because i was just there like, i dont know, august, july, end of july, he says. Its hard not to think about his cousins, many who are his own age now homeless and sleeping on the street. I feel that as a first generation moroccan american man to like, give back to my family because majority of my family is all in morocco. So i feel at least a sense of duty to give back to. Like my loved ones. They launched a gofundme page working with an ngo on the ground in morocco, hoping to raise money for food and medical supplies and to build shelter for families ahead of the coming winter. If i was ever asked what is the poorest area in morocco, i would say that region. Hatem yassin used to work for a travel agency that gave tours to the region. So he knows the area well. He says morocco isnt prepared to handle this type of disaster. Thats why they are trying to do their part to help. They just want food. They want blankets, they want water. As to whether now hurricane lee is expected to ramp back up after it weakened yesterday to a category two. The National Hurricane center says it will strengthen to a category four by tomorrow. Its still too early, though, to know how significant the hurricanes impacts will be on the northeast. For now, the east coast will be experiencing large swells and rip currents throughout the week. Back here at home, sunny skies expected this sunday. Lisa is tracking the latest. Good morning. Good morning, stephanie. We are looking at the low clouds and fog influencing our sunday morning while this system brings up subtropical moisture and rain showers to los angeles, san diego, even the desert where were looking at very high, high relative humidity, very muggy conditions and also further inland towards bakersfield. And then the thunderstorms have been pretty active from the central sierra into nevada. This is all going to die down, but not before they experience a lot of gray sky while we have a lot of sun on the way, the fog much more widespread this morning, though. So certainly gray out there at the airport. The marine layers compress. You can almost make out the height of that there where you can see were beginning to see a little bit of sun glint there. So partly sunny there and also down along the peninsula beginning to break up somewhat. 61 in Mountain View in san jose, gray sky 56 in the city, still on track for temperatures near average today. And as we look at pier 39, nice, lazy sunday there, 54. Santa rosa, nevada, with 56in napa. And looking at low 60s where the sun is shining, fairfield concord livermore is at 61 has been clear and our 24 hour temperature change. It has been cooler for sure in napa at seven degrees cooler than yesterday and a few degrees cooler elsewhere around the bay. Finally from vollmer peak, you can see the low cloud deck there. So clear inland fog will be fading in the next hour or so. And then sunny skies on the way today. Tomorrow, much breezier and cooler for your tuesday forecast. A beach hazard statement continues until 11 00 for santa cruz. That system offshore also increasing the southerly swell. So that allows for higher breaking waves that increase risk of dangerous rip currents. So certainly be careful. The south facing beaches, a lot of sun and 70 is on the way for santa cruz. So as the fog pulls back and not only pulls evaporates out inside the bay, but the marine county coast. Youre sunny, its stinson. Its sunny in Half Moon Bay and pacifica. Even montara getting a bright afternoon. But look at the fog. Come back into play for your monday morning. Could be in the Livermore Valley but the north bay youve got some upper level light north winds that could keep that fog out of the bay monday morning we have another sunny and warm day on the way with those 90s returning inland. So if you like it, warm this will be one of the warmer days as well on monday with the 80s returning for the north bay and as we look at tuesday, breezy winds much cooler about 5 to 8 degrees cooler inland and then wednesday could see a bit of a bump up with those temperatures. So highs today, 75, oakland, 83in napa, looking for those upper 80s to near 90 inland and the accuweather seven day forecast looking at a similar day tomorrow but could be a little foggier in the morning and then by tuesday its breezy and itll be a nice break from the warmth if you dont like that. Otherwise well temperatures will come up and sort of stay in the upper 80s, inland mid 70s across the bay. The rest of the week. Good to know. A nice day for the beach. But in santa cruz, though, be wary of those rip currents. Thats right. Yeah. Pretty dangerous down there. But here just the sweatshirt, sunglasses. Yeah, yeah. Nice beach weather. All right. Both will be called miller and lux provisions. One will be on the stockton side, the other on the powell side on stockton. Its going to be what were calling the savory shop. This is abc7 news. Good morning. Were starting this half hour with a look at the weather. Lisa is here with the latest. Some more sunshine. Yes, its been sunny inland all morning long. So theyre in the 60s but right now beginning to get some sun here. The shark tank at san jose 56 downtown its 59 in oakland, 61 in san jose. Even Mountain View brightening up 57 clouds, Half Moon Bay now relative humidity on top of mt. Tam, 6. Mt. Diablo in the Single Digits as well. So even though we have that marine layer, it is certainly dry in the upper elevations, 54 in santa rosa with 62 in fairfield. So the clouds clear all the way to the coast. Its sunny at our beaches with low 60s there. Mid 70s across the bay, upper 80s to near 90 inland both in the north bay and the east bay and low 80s in the south bay. So be careful out there. Always very, very dry. Stephanie lisa, thank you. Well, after years of secrecy and concerns raised over national security, the Investment Firm thats purchased nearly 1 billion worth of Solano County farm land say they want to build a city. The founder, jan sramek, wants the focus to be on Affordable Housing, clean energy and sustainable infrastructure for the firms parent company, California Forever revealed the plans after launching this website last week. Since 2018, Flannery Associates has quietly acquired more than 55,000 acres of land, some of which is now surrounding Travis Air Force base. This week, the firm will continue meeting with local, state and federal officials to discuss their vision. Joining me now is the mayor of fairfield, Catherine Moy, who met with the firms ceo. Catherine, thanks for being with us all. Hi. Thank you for having me, stephanie. Absolutely. Well, to start off, how did the meeting go from your perspective . Well, it went very well. And what i mean by that is i was able to get extra information out. Ive been looking at this for four and five years. I was a reporter for 20 years. And i first ran into johns name four years ago, tried to call him. Then he didnt respond. So i was happy to sit down with him. Now, you mentioned before you asked the ceo, john sramek, why he purchased the land surrounding Travis Air Force base. What was his response to that . He said he wants to protect the base. Im im not believing everything hes saying. I need to be convinced that that thats what he wants. It certainly uncomfortable for the base i speak with a commander there. My city manager, and i are tuned into the department of defense. And we understand what they see as a threat. So youve raised numerous concerns before about all this, including access to water, lack of infrastructure. Did you get a sense of how they plan to tackle that . Well, i know that they have some water rights and he told that to me. And thats because hes bought enough land. That is well, actually, its twice the size of my city, fairfield, which is 41miâ– s. So he its twe as big. And so there is land that has some water rights on it. But is it enough for a city . Absolutely not. Um i sit on the water agency as mayor. Weve turned down millions of dollars from from flannery to buy some of our land because they wanted it close to the base. It doesnt make sense to me. Still now, to add to that, did you get a better understanding of how this city will be powered . Well, that is a bit of an issue. They said that what they are going to do is do mostly solar farms because thats a problem or it could be a problem with an air base because a reflection. But there are new solar panels that you can use on bases and some do so thats what theyre talking about. We know that pgandes does not have the power grid to hold up a new city. They cant even open some of our new Car Dealerships ships. So those are on generators or were because pgandes cant cant do it. So its not coming from there. Thats interesting. Well, last time we spoke, you discussed potential access to a large amount of natural gas underground where flannery has acquired land. Do you have reason to believe that this could be related to these purchases . Yes, i actually do know there is a lot of natural gas or was and used, but deep down, from what i understand and from some people and im still digging into it, is that there is a lot of natural gas deeper in underground. The problem is access. The chinese, though, do have they have technology that they can get there. So perhaps, john and his group are thinking maybe they could get at that because that would definitely that would definitely fuel a city. Yeah, interesting. Certainly more to follow there. Mayor, youve seen the website thats now out giving a glimpse of the long term goal here. Why do you think building a city like they intend to is actually feasible . No and i told them that they did admit that they were forced out by the media. Me and others, to put that website out. They were not ready. So it looked cartoonish to me. It also looked like something i could write in two hours. No no, not the way it is. But they plan to put more details on their website so our citizens and everybody around the world really whos interested will see more what theyre what theyre thinking. Thats good to know. Congressman John Garamendi raised concerns last week the firm may move forward with an initiative that could impact zoning requirements around travis. But flannery has since told us they dont plan to build any homes within one mile of the base. Do you think theres reason to be concerned about that . I do. Its my biggest concern. I did ask john about this and. John told me that they are moving forward. And in november, during the president ial election here, we will have on our ballot something that will actually take away the current general plan for Solano County and would open the door for them to build a city in the center of an unincorporated area and he said maybe they would just put the houses down first if they couldnt get a city done and then down, down the road, maybe quite a bit, they try to incorporate it. And of course, discussion for the countys general plan is ongoing. Currently, if this project moves forward to a vote , do you think it will pass . What have you heard from your constituents . No so yesterday i was at a car show and there was about a thousand people there and about every other person who came up with me wanted to know about flannery and only one of all those people said, well, maybe we should listen. So its really hands down over here. Nobody wants it. 95, 96 of the people i talked to dont even want to talk to them. They want them to go away. Its my job to talk with them, so ill continue doing that. Very interesting. Well, mayor, i appreciate your insight. Thank you for your time this morning. Thank you for looking into it. Thank you. Well, according to flannerys parent company, calif forever, the firm cites previous reports from the 1960s and 1970s that found eastern Solano County had low fire risk and access to water. Some of the reasons why they felt the area would be good for a city. The firm told the iteam theyre in the preliminary stages of all this, but say the safety of Travis Air Force base is and will continue to be a top priority. Well, more to come on abc7 mornings. Stay with us. Well be right back. Theres an issue affecting many children that i cant solve alone. Its called toxic stress. Its how a childs body responds to difficult experiences from harsh language to a painful loss. It builds up inside, making it harder to fight off infections and illnesses and increasing the risk for Lasting Health issues. Fentanyl Overdose Deaths have been a problem plaguing the south bay. We have had a death as young as three months old from fentanyl poisoning all the way up to you know, middle aged adults. Now a referral by county supervisor cindy chavez aims to put overdose reversal treatment narcan on vta busses, light rail cars and transit stations. Chavez is also a vice chair on vtas board of directors. We want to make narcan available and make it ubiquitous, really anywhere that people are. This vta passenger who did not want to go on camera says he recently witnessed what he believes was an overdose on a bus. The paramedics came and had to take him off the bus and he was unconscious. And i dont know what happened to him after that, but i think that if he was dying, that narcan on the bus could have helped. We also spoke with other Public Transit users who support the possibility. I dont see any downsides to it if it can, you know, potentially save someones life. But some have reservations, including some vta employees. I spoke with one who did not want to go on camera, vta passenger william was also part of that conversation. I got a Big Education here today. The Concern Center around the pressure it could put on vta employees during an emergency, like giving mouth to mouth or Something Like that. You youve be practicing your whole life and now you see somebody overdosing on drugs and you dont know exactly if youre doing the right thing at the right time. Chavez says training, education and support will be key. Very easy to use. Its a nasal spray that can be sprayed very quickly, and its intended to keep spraying as you keep the person alert until help arrives. And because of that, the training is not long. Its not complicated. And while i think it could for some people feel like a lot of pressure, i think for others itll feel like an opportunity to help. For now, the referral would direct staff to look into the possibility of equipping vehicles and centers with narcan. If the board votes in favor of doing that thursday night, they would work with the Transit Union on the best ways to start the program. If that happens, chavez hopes vta will have the narcan by the beginning of next year. In san jose, zach fuentes, abc seven news. To weather now. Hows it looking . The fog is fading in parts of the bay area, but were still watching this tropical system right now 900 miles southwest of monterey yesterday. Tons of lightning, a couple of fires around the big sur area. They got those under control. But now its all about some moisture. The rain showers moving into los angeles. Even the desert, you can see ten there. Palm springs, high relative humidity in san diego. And as we go further north, its the thunderstorms that are beginning to settle down as this system veers to the north and east. You can see around bishop there and also up into nevada. The storm so yesterday it was more active. Today it is beginning to die down. We had the red flag warnings yesterday south of us. You can see the fog there from the peninsula. But we are getting some brighter skies. Another look at the tropics in the atlantic where lee has dropped to category two. But its going to ramp up again to a category four. Still very far away from the eastern seaboard. It takes that turn away from puerto rico, which is the good news. And now it looks like this extended outlook shows it moving well up into canada. So it could stay away from the southern new england coast and also around the carolina us. So that would be some good news. But well have to watch it. These things have a mind of their own. 59 here in santa cruz, 75 later on today with the sun, 56, downtown, 61 in oakland, still cloudy there, 63. Palo alto with some sun and its getting sunnier in san jose and the suns coming out there at the airport where numbers will be in the mid 70s. Kind of cool view there of the plane taking off 55 santa rosa. We have got brightening conditions. You have had a lot of fog from napa to novato and it is 62 by the delta. So a 24 hour temperature change shows you with all that fog compared to yesterday, 2 to 7 degrees cooler from livermore up to napa. And a final look here where upper elevations have relative humidity from 10 to 25. Just checked ben loman its 72 with just 10 relative humidity. So upper elevations have that strong north wind drying out the atmosphere. Then we have the sea breeze to look forward to this afternoon, keeping us from getting too hot. So its clear inland. The fog fading later this morning. Sunny skies not only sunday and monday. Those are our warmest days, but really all week well look for some bright conditions. But the breeze picks up on tuesday, bringing much cooler weather. We have a beach hazard statement that continues in santa cruz from that system offshore, bringing a strong southerly swell, perhaps some strong rip currents there. Look how quickly the fog fades all the way from our north county and also into marin county, san mateo coast. Were clear, but tomorrow the fog makes a bigger push and were cloudy to start out. So today, temperatures still on the warmer side of average here, 88, morgan hill, 81 in san jose on the peninsula, weve got a few 80s from redwood city, san mateo, 75. And as we get towards San Francisco, a nice day with numbers in the 70s there and as we look at the north bay, its a warm one for wine country mid 70s in our bay shore inland were warmer.
