>> alan: good evening. a 15-year-old girl who disappeared in early november has been found safe in san francisco. she and her bide abductor were located today in what can only be describe as a lucky coincidence. amy hollyfield joins us from the city with more on a chance sighting that ended a month-long search. >> amy: a san francisco woman had seen the girl on cnn andmer's most wanted. this woman would have known the girl's face anywhere, the girl who was missing was her cousin. jennifer berlinghoff heard about the search parties for her cousin. they were looking through snow. hundreds attended a candle light vigil. >> i thought, my gosh, i'm not doing enough. i live too far away. i live too far away. i live in san francisco. i'm not helping. >> reporter: jennifer is the one who found her. she and her boyfriend were leaving the sports basement when they look at a car park on division. >> there was a car off to the side with a couple people standing there, and looking around, and mike goes, hey, is that your uncle? and i'm like, yeah. like, oh, my gosh, i started shaking. >> the point was really what gave it away, and trench coat, black, and right beside her was jean, and it just fit the description. >> they watched them from a distance until police arrived. mike took pictures of the arrest and jennifer stayed far out of sight. she says the uncle, charles berlinghoff, is estranged from the family. >> he comes up every once in a while to visit his kids, and he has been allowed to stay in jake's house, and jean's dad's house, and once he found out that there might have been something inappropriate going on, they almost got in a fight, and charlie took jean. >> the family thinks he lured jean to go somewhere with him and the didn't agree to this. >> don't think she would have left willingly to go for a month and be hidden and living in a gross ford explorer on the side of division and bryant streets. >> reporter: police say jennifer cass key -- was key in identifying them, and jean and charles did not give their real name. >> there was worry and concern for him. >> for him. >> yes. >> jennifer and mike are celebrating tonight. they believe it was fate that took them shopping at the right time today. >> don't know how it work out the way it did just perfectly. it's so absurd. i'm the only one that lives near san francisco. >> reporter: there was a third man with jean and charles. police don't know his involvement. they did detain him and they're trying to figure out if he is involved. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc-7 news. >> alan: a man accused of abducting another girl and also bringing her here is undergoing psychiatric testing at the san francisco jail tonight. police from virginia are also in town to question himself 12-year-old brittany smith vanished a week ago from roanoke, virginia, where her mother was murdered. yesterday, the suspect, jeffrey easily, was spotted with brittani in san francisco and arrest. the detectives are preparing to extradite easily. he has been named a suspect in the murder of brittani's mother. >> as far as the murder charge, i think that that's something you'll have to consult with the commonwealth attorney on. >> alan: police say brittany and easily were seen pane-handling outside a safeway store. a shopper recognized them and called police police say easily told them he cam to san francisco as it came up on a google search as the best place to be homeless. several blocks of east oakland had to be shut done after one person was killed and three others shot. shell case examination other evidence littered two blocks of international boulevard. police say the other three injuries are not life-threatening. and they're still trying to figure out the motive. so far trainees go through. scenarios from confronting a suspect to use of lethal force are run through a computer. >> we include in a lot of our training are shot and no-shoot scenarios, tactile communications, talk this person into surrender. >> it's the basis for the department's policy, comes down to use only level of force that is objectively reasonable based on the totality of circumstances at the time, circumstances which officers need to react to in seconds. for the first time ever the oakland police allowed elected officials, community members and the media to attend a five our training on use of force. the naacp clifton keep said it was an eye-opener. >> the community at times believes that the forces are sometimes excessive. and it's primarily the reason why this what our officers are trained, what their limitations are. >> reporter: the police chief says the use of force training sessions were held twice a year when he was in long beach. they will happen every year here in oakland. >> alan: an employee at napa state hospital is in serious condition after being attacked bay patient. it happened this morning, and lisa amin gulezian tells us, this is the second attack in four days. >> it's dangerous. and we are losing control. we have lost control. >> lisa: those who work at napa state hospital say it's like being in a war zone, where staffers are constantly facing off against patients. on wednesday, a custodian was beat 'unconscious, and this morning, rehabilitation therapist, r. t., was attacked. >> the same person that committed the crime against the custodian was out with the r. t. the r. t. was beat up by the patient that beat up the custodian the other day. >> lisa: he is in the napa county jail, charged with assault. the attacks are less than two months after the murder of donna gros, describing technician. her accused killer is jeff massey. >> we have always been on a high alertness because of what happened to donna, and doing their best to remove themselves from any situation that could be potentially fatal or dangerous. his. >> lisa: flours are -- flowers are placed on the front lawn to remind management of the safety concerns they have. hospital management would not speak with us on camera, but released this statement, quote: napa state hospital immediately added additional measures for escorting patients tonight, advisories for the bay area overnight tonight, mixture of sun and fog tomorrow. it will be a little warmer as we're hoping the fog bank will thin out sooner tomorrow afternoon, and tomorrow is a winterer "spare the air" day, which means no burning of wood tomorrow. here is a look at the dense fog advisory until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, with visibility below a half a mile across the pay area. lows tonight generally in the upper 40s in the north bay to mid-to-low 50s elsewhere, and that fog is going to continue to thicken during the evening. we also are getting into some offshore
