in for kristen sze. less than 24 hours he hosted several events and raised an estimated $1.8 million for democrats. a day in the life of president barack obama who wrapped up a quick trip to the bay area this morning. terry mcsweeney is live at san francisco international airport with more on his visit. hi, terry. >> hi how you doing. money and excitement. that's what the president is hoping to raise during his four-day campaign swing around the western united states. how would you like to take a look this morning at air force i. right across the water here at san francisco international airport. the president came in last night on it. he's leaving a short time from now back down to l.a. to try to do some work down there. this is a campaign swing that took him to the silicon valley last night. mr. obama arrived here yesterday, was greeted by two beneficiaries of his visit. one, senator barbara boxer and mayor gavin newsom. he wants to be lieutenant governor, she wants to be reelected. mr. obama's first stop less than an hour in atherton raising money for san francisco d.a. and attorney general candidate harris hosted by former state controller steve wesley then dinner at the palo alto home of google executive melissa meyer. >> the call for democrats this year, while women say they're going to vote for democrats they're not giving them the same big margins they have in the past. >> there is a tremendous amount of republican money out there. >> this guy is no friend to the american people. he is a tool of the wall street bankers. >> protestors greeting this president during a stop in the silicon valley. they're playing a part in this year's election. the president taking off for los angeles today. he's going to be down there to have a massive rally with senator barbara boxer. then it's on to las vegas where he's going to try to help out senator harry reid hang on to the majority, majority leader. harry reid in a lot of trouble out there in las vegas. part of the problems for democrats, it's not just the women or the tea party, it's just there's a general malaise they feel. the democrats are not as energized as the republicans. he's hoping the four-day swing takes care of that. terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thank you. it's 5:03. in the south bay the district attorney has made a decision whether to prosecute a san jose police officer who pulled a scared straight stunt and the incident was captured on video and shown across the country. theresa, what's that decision? >> that the officer did not violate the law. this is a nationally publicized case. the debate was it the parenting lesson versus the possible abuse of police power. but in the ice of the santa clara district attorney's office they decided he did not violate the law when he handcuffed and took into temporary custody a boy that he learned had sex with the officer's 14-year-old stepdaughter. part of the arrest was secretly recorded on video by the boy's father. during the august 30th confrontation, the officer showed up in uniform at the end of his shift. the debate is whether he violated law or department policy. the boys' parents say they thought the officer came to arrest their son and never gave permission to use scared straight tactics, handcuffing him him, riding in the cruiser. under the institutions code the officer had the authority to take a minor into temporary custody if there's reasonable cause to believe a criminal offense was committed. this case unlawful sexual intercourse. the police department criminally cited both teens for underaged sex. while the officer is not facing criminal charges he remains on paid administration leave and deciding whether the conduct violated policy. if so there could be discipline ranging from extra training to actually termination. and meanwhile the department is drafting a new policy that would prohibit officers from getting involved in cases with their family members. live in san jose theresa garcia, abc 7 news. >> 5:05. a unusual finding at a cemetery has sparked a police investigation. a maintenance worker at the holy cross catholic cemetery spotted two jars sticking out of the ground. he noticed a human heart in each of the jars with a photo of a couple pinned to each jar. the picture is two different couples and police are trying to figure out their identities. they likely came from dead bodies. investigators say it may be related to some kind of ritual involved with an afro caribbean religion. >> a woman disguised as a woman and enters the woman's locker room and taking pictures he was seen pointing a cellphone at women undressing. one time he dropped a wig. staff members confronted the suspect, 29-year-old hernandez but he ran away both times. he is not a studented. a heads up this morning from san mateo county animal control about a mountain lion sighting. the cat was spotted 11 a.m. near half moon bay. the mountain lion roamed in an area near 22 terrace avenue. people who encounter big cats should not approach them. instead they should call police. >> rain is threatening this year grape harvest. growers are waiting to harvest the grapes before rain drenches vineyards. storms are expected to dump an inch or more of rain by monday. the rains are a problem because grapes are ripening a couple weeks later than usual because of a cool summer. they hope to get 70% of the grapes harvested by tonight. they say the thin-skinned grapes such as chardonnay are particularly vulnerable. >> what good for our lawns is bad for the grapes. >> i know, i know. seems like they've had trouble every single year recently. >> do they? >> the rains just keep falling this weekend. >> all about timing with that harvest. fall and two weeks later it would have been a warmer summer, wouldn't have to worry about it. they're going to be working feverishly because of that rain. less rain than some of the other wine-producing neighborhoods. here we're looking at last three hours. live doppler 7 hd. you can see a bulk of the moisture moving into the central valley and falling apart. cold front moving through right now. that will present a chance for a few more showers during the morning commute but the heaviest of the rain is over. we'll have an unstable atmosphere. we get a little sunshine, a moist atmosphere. warm it up, overturn it. a few scattered showers developing during the afternoon but not as widespread as this morning as we have two-tenth of rain in the napa valley. low 50s along the coast, into the north bay valleys with upper 60s to near 70 in the east bay valleys and in the south bay. down around the monterey bay a little more sunshine mid to upper 60s around the bay upper 60s to low 70s inland. seven-day forecast, for tomorrow probably the heaviest in the morning and then sunday the heaviest for all of us. that's when those rain totals could near an inch in the north bay, quarter to a half inch around the bay. good office as the november 2nd election date nears. what are their chances of winning enough seats to have an influence in the house and senate. karen traverse takes a look. ♪ from sea to shining sea. >> in just over a year, the tea party movement has evolved from a collection of anti-government activists upset at federal spending. ♪ i wanna wake up in my america. >> to a political block that could have a real impact on the next congress. >> we're gonna do what's necessary in order to make sure america gets back on the right path. >> there's no official tea party platform or even one national party with a leader. but several tea party-backed candidates such as cheryl engel in nevada, joe in alaska agree on a key position like making permanent the bush tax cuts, repealing what happened in march and the irs and the department of education. when tea party candidates were knocking off establishing candidates in republican primaries, they were seen as a headache by the party leaders in washington. now they're a key step in the gop's path in winning back the majority. two years ago barack obama rode into the white house on a wave of change. today the tea party has that. the news poll found that 55% of americans said that the tea party can bring about major change in the way the government operates. >> voters sort of ascribe what their notion of change is on to these candidates. >> the big question will be can the tea party deliver? it is one thing to campaign it is quite another to legislate. just ask president obama. abc news washington. >> time now 5:14. the head of the nonprofit group that runs the san francisco gay pride parade has now resigned. many say the resignation of amy andre was sparked by what may have been an accounting error. the larger pride organization short changed them out of $50,000 earned from beverage booths. andre said a mistake was made and the money will be paid but some question whether that's possible because the pride group is at least $99,000 in debt. two city supervisors have now stepped in to help organize the books while the group searches for a new leader. >> it's going to be a long time before the bay area bounces back from the recession especially as far as unemployment is concerned. that's the take of bay area economists who say the outlook is bleakest for san francisco and the east bay. they say jobs there are not expected to return to pre-recession numbers for another three or four years. only this silicon valley are the prospects brighter. expectations are the san jose metro area will see 3% more jobs available next year than currently on tap. >> the arctic is shrinking to one of the lowest levels on record. the arctic report card was put together by 69 researchers in eight countries. temperatures in the arctic has risen to more than 7 degrees above normal and they say last winter's massive snowstorms on the east coast were tied to higher arctic temperatures. scientists concerned about global warming are focusing on the arctic because its effects are expected there first. >> 5:16 now. it's been amazing to watch some of those big ice floes just break off take off. >> you notice probably the oil and gas companies going may be a little easier to drill there now, too. bigger effects than just what we're seeing right now. let's talk about what's happening here. and at sfo this morning i expect flight arrival delays as we still have low clouds and even a few sprinkles hanging around. we'll keep an eye on that and also our flight tracker also. anytime you get these blues, it's really, really really light. and some of it may not even be reaching the ground. a little sprinkle from candlestick towards sfo. we're seeing a few radar returns. out in the north bay valleys up there near santa rosa and saint helena. temperatures mid-50s around the bay and monterey bay inland gilroy slightly cooler, 52. mostly cloudy today and scattered showers are possible. the bulk of them already fell but with sunshine and the moist atmosphere we could see a shower or two this afternoon like yesterday. it will be light. rain tonight on and off tomorrow and the heaviest rain will fall on sunday. let's take a look what happened while you were sleeping. a cold front pushing into the heart of the bay right now. that's why we're seeing most of the shower activity away from us and why it will become very light during the afternoon hours. this is the first in a series of storms. you can see them lining up on the jet stream here like a parade. these will punch through over the weekend, bring us that wet weather pattern. won't be a complete washout. saturday probably the easier day to get in outdoor activities. you can see the scattered showers falling apart through the morning hours and redeveloping into the afternoon. once the sun sets, you can lose the instability and heat and everything is quiet for tonight. tomorrow morning about 8:00 looking at some of the showers returning up into the north bay valleys. some of the shower activity and light rain will become more persistent once the sun sets saturday afternoon and into the evening hours. look at waves of rain coming through on sunday with the heaviest with the last cool front right around 5:00 sunday afternoon into the evening hours. once we get past that looks like it will be dry hopefully for monday morning commute. rainfall amounts, about an inch up in the north bay is possible. a quarter inch in some of your deeper valleys, around bay and a tenth of an inch in the east bay valleys. most neighborhoods if we see 70s it will be the east bay valleys and the santa clara valley. temperatures remain pretty mild even with the rain tomorrow and sunday. chance of rain lingering into monday's forecast tuesday and for insures wednesday and thursday looking drier with temperatures warming back to those levels. >> we have some road work if you're getting ready to head towards sacramento or lake tahoe. solano county eastbound 80 between highway 12 and air base parkway. that should be cleared by about 7:00 this morning. if you're taking mass transit, no delays, everything is running on schedule today. let's go outside in the south bay for a live look. this is 280 right at the 17 overcrossing. as you can see, nice and light. no problems right now through the downtown san jose area. and for our north bay commuter, a live look in san rafael. taillights are moving south bay along 101 and the drive time from 37 all the way to 580 just a light nine minutes. definitely friday light out there. radar returns showing up but talking about sprinkles that maybe will help keep the streets a little slick this morning. about six-hundredths in santa rosa overnight. only about a tenth of an inch down in san jose. put this in motion, you can see the heaviest of the wet weather moving into the central valley and just about to climb into the foothills and up into the sierra. behind it things get a lot quieter but still the possibility of a light shower in the forecast this afternoon just like we had yesterday afternoon. very light. probably more of a nuisance than anything else. i'll have those because there was a mess to start with. but people don't seem to be buying that message. they're not happy with the economic recovery. it's taking too long. the loss of jobs really hitting home with women. they are not coming out in the support, in the droves that they usually come out for democrats. that's one of the problems for democrats. the other problem is the tea party candidate the news this morning, two san francisco police officers are recovering after being injured when their car hit a muni pole last night. they were heading southbound on san jose avenue near randall street about 6:45 yesterday evening. the car ended up on the muni tracks. the muni power pole was knocked over. the officers were not responding to a call. the officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. no word on the cause. >> a fremont police officer who was badly injured in a shooting two months ago has finally been really leased from the hospital and is back home with his family this morning. 39-year-old officer todd young was shot trying to arrest a suspected gang member in oakland. one of the two bullets tore through his stomach and bladder. his recovery process will include several more months of rehabilitation and physical therapy. >> officials now say parts of an upscale north california mall could be closed for months because of a standoff with an arsonist. it all started yesterday when a man with a backpack walked into a gaming store at the roseville galleria. he flashed a gun and threatened employees and ordered everyone out. moments later he set the store on fire. the entire mall was evacuated. >> one of the mall security went by and said you need to evacuate. told the customers you gotta go. >> worrieded about my people and getting everybody out of the place. had a couple of ladies that we helped out. >> you can see from sky 7 hd that part of the roof collapsed. firefighters had to fight the flames from the outside because they didn't know if the suspect's backpack contained explosives. the suspect, 23-year-old alexander pigay was charged with arson. his mother told the news station her son has mental health problems and lost his job. >> classes resume at a gardner academy elementary school after a gas leak forced the school to send all the kids home early yesterday. 15 homes were also evacuated. a police officer noticed the smell of gas 9:30 yesterday on willis avenue. it took pg&e about two hours to find and tap the leak from an underground 2 inch gas line. utility workers are still trying to figure out what caused the leak. >> electric nick vending machines will be in place at golden gate ferry terminals. an oversight committee has improved a plan to install vending machines at the san francisco, sausalito ferry terminals by summer. the move is part of the district's effort to reduce its $132 million deficit. sought mating the ferry ticketing procedures will save $600,000 a year but will mean the elimination of seven jobs. >> 5:35 now. there's new debt in muni's future. the agency that oversees muni says it will begin borrowing money this summer to deal with a cash flow shortage. but the san francisco municipal transportation agency has not yet said how much debt it plans to incur or what projects it's going to fund. those details will be made public in january. a 2009 study found muni needed close to $700 million for fleet maintenance and upgrades. the debt announcement comes four years after voters approved the plan. >> time now 5:36. we've had some sprinkles in the last 24 hours. how long are they going to linger around. let's check with meteorologist mike nicco. more scattered in nature with the bulk of the wet weather following this weekend as our first significant wet weather maker of the year is here. right now mainly slick streets and a few sprinkles hanging around. temperatures mid to upper 50s. compared to yesterday pretty close in many areas if not warmer mountain view san jose, los gatos and novato about 4 degrees warmer. 4 degrees cooler in oakland concord, san francisco and napa. not a huge change from yesterday morning. 8:00 we'll still have scattered light showers hangin' around and temperatures holding in the mid to upper 50s. by noon those showers are going to become less and less. may even see a little sunshine in a few areas like the east bay valleys and the santa clara valleys. low to mid-60s there with mid to upper 50s along the coast into san francisco and san rafael, napa and santa rosa. by 4:00 again just a few lingering light showers like yesterday afternoon. low to mid-60s around the bay. mid to upper 60s in the east bay valley. still the upper 50s along the coast. let's take a look at that accu-weather seven-day forecast. might want to have a plan b on sunday, especially for the rain that's going to roll in. it will be lighter on saturday. by the time monday rolls around it will become more scattered in home field were disappointed last night. many paid a hefty price to see that games and hopes of being at the game when the giants clinch the national league pennant. some paid up to $15,000 for a premium seat to the game but even the worst seats in the house didn't come cheap. one fan spent $400 on three seats up in the stadium's very, very last row. >> i can see just fine. i'm just happy to scattered sprinkles are going to continue during the morning rush hour. some in the north bay valleys. the bulk of the wet weather is over for now. what it left behind? clouds a moist air mass and become a little more off and on tomorrow. the bulk of the rain will fall during the morning hours. heaviest of the rain is sunday. let's take a look at temperatures real quick. mid to upper 60s through the east bay valleys. near 70 antioch and livermore. low to mid-60s with a mostly cloudy sky on the east bay shore. may see a little more sunshine south bay with mid to upper 60s for you. mostly cloudy on the peninsula with mid-60s. may hit 67 los gatos and mountain view as you head into the south bay. near 60 along the coast with cloudy conditions. mostly cloudy in downtown and south san francisco and throughout the north bay valleys. throw mid-60s for you. upper 50s your beaches and monterey bay a little more sunshine. mid to upper 60s. inland upper 60s to near 70. for tonight cloudy conditions and temperatures mild once again in the mid-to upper 50s. let's take a look at how this system is going to play out. here we are this morning and you can see the scattered nature of these showers really taper after the sunset tonight dealing with just pretty much cloudy condition. rain moves into the north bay during the morning hours and you can see it kind of spread across the rest of us and on and off until we get to the evening hours and becomes particularly heavy and stays that way during the overnight sunday and from sunday mid-morning to mid-afternoon, that's when the heaviest batch will roll through. an inch and quarter in your valleys. quarter to a half inch around the bay. up to a quarter of an inch in the south bay. pretty significant system. first one of the park would allow the police to make arrest. the plan would have to be approved by the supervisors and the recreation and park commission. >> a deal to save the fairmont hotel's historic conga room has been put on hold. last night the city planning commission met to discuss the hotel's $130 million renovation project. the commission delayed its decision until next year because there are so many
