Lightning sparked a fire at an apartment in northeast iowa this morning. Firefighters from four departments responded just after 5 this morning to the apartment at main and jefferson streets. Firefighters say no one was hurt in the fire. In polk city, a person died after a house caught on fire. Firefighters responded to the home, located north of des moines, just before 9 last night. Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the flames. It took crews about 15 least 1 person did escape, but crews found a body of someone else in the basement. The victims name is not yet public. Cedar rapids fire investigators say a fire at rileys caf near downtown cedar rapids started in or near a ventilation fan by the dishwashing area. Its located at 836 1st avenue east. It took firefighters more than an hour to get control of the fire that broke out before 4 pm yesterday. One firefighter crews had to remove most of rileys food and check to make sure the fire wasnt spreading. The diner could now be closed for awhile. Its been a diner type restaurant at this location for almost 35 years. Lots of social meetings and business meetings. Its really quite a loss for the community. Neither of the businesses next to rileys had any fire damage, but moose mcduffys has smoke damage. The restaurant was closed when the fire started. There is a good section of the roof of rileys thats either been consumed by fire or check for fire extension.
