[cheers and applause] >> welcome and merry christmas. also, thanks so much for all your service which you do on daily basis for this country. >> we all have so much to be thankful for this year. we want to start with what this holiday means to each of us. i will start to me christmas means, of course, the coziness of sitting around the tree in our pajamas with blankets on. and, of course, my being italian, a lot of is about food. eating lots of sweet treats that i may not eat at other times of the year and just slowing down to reconnect with family over some long leisurely meals. i love the music and, of course, the anticipation of what santa will bring for everyone. >> yes, most of all to me it means ear to ear smiles on my kids' faces. family all coming together remembering we do indeed have gifts before the kids tear into all those presents and recently christmas means to me three hours on the curvey couch with clayton morris. >> lucky. >> now that's a blessing. >> in my house it's all about the family and also the time of year when i get to stay in my pajamas all day long. i wake up, don't comb my hair. a huge breakfast that my mom has prepared. i open gifts still in my pajamas, dad and i watch football still in pam pa jamas. every year my mom says are you going to get dressed today and i say it's all about family. >> you are painting a vivid picture for us. >> pajamas on the show. >> please. >> i'm thinking about pajamas in church. i like that. >> i wear footy pajamas. >> growing up in minnesota, my grandfather was a minister so the christmas and celebrating christ's birth was paramount. we used to perform our violin and cello at christmas eve services and that was five or six services. all my immediate relatives lived within a mile. even though we had a small family we were always together and, of course, food. the real scanned i navin delicacy something called cod fish soaked in lye baked with consistency of jelly fish and added plus was it had bones. >> delicious. >> my memories are exactly like gretchen so i will pass. kidding. growing up in new york about growing going to my mom's house. you start off as of late over the last 14 years is what the kids are going to get. how early they are going to get you up. how much fun that's going to be and maybe this will be the first year we actually don't inadvertently toss out our favorite gift. >> it's in there somewhere. >> hope we kept the receipt. >> that's very, very nice. for me, you know, it is the reason for the season. that is about the birth of christ. and, maybe it's because we always get this time of year everybody watching gets the same thing, you know, those pictures of the families from all of our friends across the country and you see how big the kids have gotten and how the families are getting along and you start to think about whether or not you have done a good job this past year. not only with your own family but elsewhere. and then you start thinking about charity. you notice this time of year? you seem to give out more money. the guy at the bucket winds up with a 5 rather than a 1. sometimes i wonder if it's because, you know, remember the tv show sesame street and they used to sing that song, you know, the christmas feeling all through the year. i wish we could have that feeling that we have right now all year long. wouldn't that be great? >> of course at christmas and all year long we are also thankful for those who serve and protect us to keep us free and safe. what does christmas mean to them? luckily we have geraldo. is he with our military audience right now to hear some of their stories. geraldo? >> gretchen, thank you very much. among the testimony sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform is the time they have had to spend away from their families during the holidays. the holidays come to mean an awful lot to these men and women in the uniform of the armed forces of the united states of america. let's get it right from the service people's mouths first personnel specialist iii roberto lopez. what does it mean to you? >> christmas means to me a time to celebrate with family and friends. those who are here with you and those who may be away. time to remember all of my ship mates who are deployed at sea. and boots and ground. that's what christmas means to me. >> all right. thanks very much. thank you for your service. okay. next, is chief therese. >> hello. christmas means a time of celebrating the christmas, sharing gifts with everyone and spreading joy. >> if he lease -- if >> sacrifice and gratitude. basically everybody puts aside all their differences and comes together and shares love and presents and everybody sacrificing their time, especially those service members that are overseas. >> all right. thank you very much. and thank you all for your service. merry christmas, happy hanukkah. all the rest of it thank you again. [cheers and applause] >> wow. that was the first time jody had seen her husband army sergeant mark foster since he left for afghanistan eight months ago on his fifth deployment. we welcome to our studios sergeant foster. jody and their daughter taylor. welcome to all of you. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> i saw, jody, looking at that again and i'm sure have you seen it a lot. what were your thoughts? what was going through your mind. >> just the best day of my life. seeing him come home. pulling up on that field, knowing i can actually touch him, feel him, see him, it was great, great. >> sergeant, you found out that 250 people submitted essays to talk about their -- their loved one who is deployed or is serving and your family won. your two daughters and your son wrote in and submitted by your wife. what was that like for you serving in afghanistan when you heard that? >> i was floored. flabbergasted. i didn't think they cared that much about me be honest with you. but it was a good thing. >> and it was. and it went. and with that you thought all right go to a titans redskins game. get something in between quarters at a time out. you are sitting there and then how did you know that there was something going on that you didn't understand? the crowd started roaring and that had you wheeling around? >> when the announcer said keep your eyes on the field we have another surprise coming, i was looking around me and there was nothing on the field. then i hear everybody behind me cheering. that's when i was like something is behind me. i have got to look. so i just started to turn around and there he was. >> he had come in the day before and had you to not say hello. you were in the stadium. you knew kayla and your wife was there and not say hello. was that tough, sergeant? >> the deployments are easier. [ laughter ] >> than sitting in the stadium. >> it would have been easier to stay in afghanistan than have to 15 hours, 18 hours not be able to talk to her. it was rough. >> i'm sure all the essays were fantastic. when i read yours, it was no doubt why you won. came from the heart and so real. kayla, the word is that the excerpt about you is what really knocked it out of the park for your family. >> um-huh. >> do you mind reading it for us right now? we will put it up on the screen. this is just a portion of the he is say. go ahead. >> >> wow. round of applause for that. this is what i heard, sergeant. it's almost easier to be deployed. when you come home and then you hear what they go through without you. could you talk about that a little bit how tough that is knowing that there is another life, depending on you at home? >> yeah. to be honest with you, i think they have it rougher than i do. i know what i'm facing. you know, they got the day-to-day different things going on with issues in the house, issues with cars. you know do they have the money to go to the grocery store to get some food for the day. i know i have got three meals a day. i know i have got a bed to sleep in. by far, you know, they definitely have a rougher life dealing with what goes on than what i do. you know, it's just rough on them. >> jody, here it's been months, your fifth deployment. does it ever get easier? >> no. you just learn how to deal with it and each deployment you learn something new to deal with the next one. and you just -- you have got to do it. it goes with the uniform. >> kayla, does this seem surreal to you? do you get emotional seeing your dad again and reliving these moments. >> yeah. >> and sister and your brother, also? that makes it fun. what is it like when your dad goes? is that the worst? does it make it all better when he comes back? >> pretty much. but i hate r and r because, yeah, he comes home but he goes right back. it makes like teasing us. >> sergeant, you going back? >> yes. i leave on monday to go back. >> wow. you had thanksgiving together the first time together in a long time, right? >> yeah. >> everyone has to keep that in mind. no rough how it can be people serving every day to keep us free. do you feel appreciated? >> 99.9% of the time, yes. i don't care where i go, i don't know if it's the hair cut or what, people know you are in the military. and they thank you. you know, they appreciate what you do. you have always got the one or two that, i don't know, i just think they have nothing better to do with their lives than to make other people's miserable but 99% of the time definite appreciation from everybody i run into. >> you get it from people who serve like you do and of course here from fox every day. taylor and jodi so kind to share your story. you pulled off a pretty good surprise. i'm proud of you. >> a lot of work to get it done. it was awesome. >> merry christmas. hope to have you back when you are back permanently. that would be fantastic. thanks so much, guys. >> thank you. >> gretchen? >> what a great story, brian, thank you. raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, we all have our favorite things during the holidays. next, sarah palin shares her favorite. >> sergeant james schmidt, i'm province afghanistan. i want to say hay to my 90% back home. i love you. i would also like to say hi to my daughter and parents in decatur, illinois. merry christmas. >> i'm major jeff barker from camp leather neck in afghanistan. i would like to give a shout out and holiday greetings to my beautiful life shannon and my lovely dawrdz phoebe liddy and abigail. spending the holiday season with their grandparents. merry christmas and have a great new year. i was young, i was in shape, and i had a heart attack. you need to do the preventative things that you need to do for your heart health. for me, it means an aspirin regimen. before you begin an aspirin regimen. speo your dtor. when you want your gifts to rlly matter, there's one gift you can always count on to save the day when the next disaster strikes, when a neighbor's house burns down, if someone needslifesavd or the comfort of helping han hope- it's the gift you give today to the american recross. visit redcross.org and give the gift that saves the day. [ applause ] >> america's favorite tv family. they are called a modern day brady bunch. they, of course, are the kardashians, kim, courtney, and chloe join us now. merry christmas, ladies. >> member -- merry christmas. >> tell us what christmas was like in your household. >> christmas is still exactly the same. we have a christmas eve party that we have had since courtney was born that my mom and, you know, started with my dad. christmas time in our family like there is always been like music playing in the house. it's just like such a warm feeling. it's -- we're such dorks who listen to like christmas music on the radio like all day long. >> we will wear matching pajamas. >> every night. >> my grandma gives the whole family a new set of holiday themed pajamas. >> and my mom sends us all huge ginger bread houses. >> with our names on them. >> with our names on them and icing. >> this is our favorite holiday hands down. >> it sounds so festive. and you guys have a big family. so matching pajamas, the pictures of you guys in your pajamas in the morning are hilarious. >> they are in the book, too. we have some of the pictures in the book of holiday pajamas and all of us christmas morning. >> all the different years. >> we get up every christmas morning like 6:00 in the morning. everybody has to be there to see what santa brought. >> we open presents until about 10:00 and then all the girls cook a big brunch together. then we're lazy and probably go see a movie christmas night. >> it sounds wonderful. tell me about, speaking of presents, what your favorite all-time present was, if you can. kim? >> probably a card that my dad wrote me and put it in my stocking like as a stuffer. i still have it. and it says this is for a one-hour conversation about life with your father. and then i was like dad, this is a lamest gift. what is this? >> and then he was like trust me, one day you will wish that you can use this. and so, of course now i'm like oh, i wish i could use it. >> isn't it so funny, you guys got some fancy gifts. you got a lot of stuff i read in the book but after a all of that that's what you cherish. >> i think, you know, family is everything. material stuff as much as we like it and it's all fun, it's not really like defines you. certainly not what christmas is about. i got a car one christmas morning but it was how it happened, we were at my mom's house opening presents and we see my dad walking in our backyard and everyone was like i think dad is here. we are all screaming like dad, we were so excited that he was here christmas morning. he just came up to me and handed me a little heart box. >> threw her keys. >> it was in a heart tin box. i opened up the tin box and mercedes key in the box. i screamed. >> we were all screaming. >> i felt like everybody got this car. >> i would say my favorite was my parents got me a sewing machine and i was dying for a sewing machine because i was ortega taking this class in high school where we learned how to sue. -- sew. now that you have a baby what tradition will you bring to your new family. >> all of them. i wasn't that person who like decorated my house or anything like that, but then whether you have kids, i feel like you have to, you know, start like i'm like i can't wait to get a christmas tree and decorate and get -- now i need to get mason his own stocking. like he has one at my mom's. >> also the cool thing is that our that you tra additions, my little sister kylie is 13 now. you know, our christmas eve parties were almost going to be dying out because, you know, everyone is kind of older. more of an older vibe. now that mason is here, my mom says good i have got to keep everything going. we still got to relive our childhood through mason which is really cool. >> that's so nice. let's talk about gifts you have given. let's start with you chloe, what gift are you going to give your husband this year. >> i talked honestly no gifts. we have got to calm down. we get gifts. he buys me things all the time or we do little things for each other. i don't need presents just because it's christmas. >> what are you hoping for courtney? >> it's so weird like he said now that i have a baby it's all about him. what's mason going to get? like, you know, i think i'm going to get him a tee pee. i want him to have a tee pee. >> you are like i'm sorry, what? >> ladies, thank you so much for coming in. your christmas memories and traditions are really heart warming. it's great to meet all of you. and to have a wonderful christmas. >> thank you. you too. [ applause ] >> many of us have the luxury of being home for the holidays with our families but for members of the military, like we have got here today, that is not always true. this family here, that i'm about to introduce you to, is going to share with us some of the struggles of being apart, especially during some of life's most special moments. joining us right now are ott and their families. thank you. >> dawn -- don is a private first class in the u.s. army. i think we have got some army folks here today, right? absolutely. [ applause ] how did you two meet? let's start with this. this is one of those stories about a life -- how tough it is for a family that is deployed. and you are about to be deployed. >> correct. we first met when we were in college. we were attending the university of north carolina at charlotte. in our apartment complex she lived catty cornered to us. and we passed a couple times on our way back forth to class. we finally met and started hanging out. and after i would say a couple weeks, we pretty much. >> moved in together. >> yeah, moved in together. inseparable for. >> not too long after that you realized things were going well and you popped the question on a valentine's day. near valentine's day, right? >> yes. that was valentine's day of this year. it was couple days prior to. i had to work valentine's day so i wasn't going to be able to be there. >> corrine, that's the guy you are going to marry, right? >> yeah. we actually tried to stop talking when we knew that he was leaving and we just couldn't. because that was the military life was nothing i ever wanted but things happen. i'm 100% happy right now. >> let's back it up just a little bit. so you got engaged. and then what was it just -- you started planning your wedding. and you put a great big deposit down on, what? >> on everything. we put a big deposit down. i flew out in april and we. >> behind you is your mom. she helped you do some planning. >> we went to charleston, south carolina, that's where it was supposed to be. came home, talked it over. put down a deposit and three days later, he comes home with the news. >> what was the news from your boss? >> they had asked me if i wanted to deploy and i -- it was kind of a situation that i couldn't turn down. so i came home and talked to her about it. and we both decided that it would be the best for where i am at in my career. >> sure. so you were thinking o man, i'm going to be deployed. there goes that money, that great big deposit. we could have afforded affordedh so we spent more. something happened. you have a secret that you have not shared with your entire family. >> yes. mom, dad, and debbie know but just recently we did get married. just this past month. surprise. we wanted to tell you over christmas don't cry. [ laughter ] >> this is a surprise, isn't it? >> yes. totally. >> totally shocked. okay. [inaudible] >> why didn't you tell your families that you had gone out and had a very small, just justice of the peace only wedding? >> because we wanted to tell them in person at christmas. and we actually have -- we already printed up the announcements to send out. and just recently. >> but the justice of the peace wedding was so small. and that was not what you had planned on. >> no. >> in your dream. in a girl's dream. >> no, obviously not. >> you wanted a big wedding. >> yes. >> because the two of you, with don's service to the country, have given so much, that simply wasn't in the cards, was it? >> not at this time. >> well, grandma, how do you feel about knowing that they actually are married now? >> i'm delighted. >> grandpa? >> i'm totally shocked. >> now, it's absolutely -- >> i know it's been a lot for you to process so far grandma and grandpa that they are already married, about how about this? how about since they have given so much for our country, how about we give you the dream wedding that you always wanted right here on "fox & friends"? how would you like that? [ applause ] so bring out the stuff. we have got some elves over here. take a look. this is much different than you had at the justice of the peace. we have wedding dresses. and pick one. we have blue nile wedding rings that she will select something from. flower bias -- flowers by 1-800-flowers. there are the rings that they are going to choose from. right here turn around this way. look at these. these are lenovo laptops. built-in web cam so the happy couple can keep in contact when he is deployed. how great is this? how much fun. >> i actually just broke his laptop. [ laughter ] >> i'm very excited. >> grandma, now how do you feel? >> oh great! [ laughter ] >> worth the trip? >> oh. i'm telling you. >> we have got another hour to go. one hour from now don and corrine are going to be married on this program. we have a reverend in the house. is he going to do the officiating. are you ready? >> how about a round of applause. the bride has got to get ready the groom has got to get ready everybody has got to get ready what a christmas show.
