we're following the breaking news in chardon, ohio. a suspect is in custody. the investigation is unfolding. here's the news conference that's happening right now. >> and rapidly. yesterday's event, as a result of that training and practice, if you would, law enforcement was quickly placed inside the school upon arrival. and we believe that that helped to lessen the tragedy that occurred. unfortunately, much had occurred prior to law enforcement's arrival. i'd like to bring joe bernance, chardon's school superintendent to speak. >> first of all, i'd like to thank our law enforcement for working with us so diligently over the last couple of hours. noejs, our sympathy goes out to the five victims in the case, there's not a lot you can say when you are responsible for the safety of 3100 kids, other than the fact that we're going to do the best we can to make sure our schools continue to be safe and continue to work with law enforceme enforcement. we have grief counselors available at our middle school and we've organized a candlelight vigil at st. mary church tomorrow night across the street at 7:00. we'll have counselors available for, obviously, for the victims and their families. we have school personnel available. >> all right. it looks like we lost that connection with that news conference. we'll try to re-establish it and see what's going on right now it looks like that -- actually, i think we got it back. >> the immediate vicinity where the incident took place, as well as to our teaching staff, our professional staff, bus drivers, et cetera. so the next couple of days we'll be focusing heavy-duty on our grief counseling and then obviously, subsequent sessions after that. classes will be cancelled for the entire chardon schools tomorrow. there will be no students in attendance and i'm asking our teachers and faculty and all support staff, with the exception of about five maintenance people, in case we need access to the buildings, we want them to stay home and spend some time reflecting on family. i hope every parent, if you haven't hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple of days, take that time. thank you. and, again, it's a sad day for us here at chardon schools. i'll introduce our police chief and good friend of mine, tim mckenna. >> i'm the police chief here in chardon, ohio. at 07:38 this morning our first 911 call came in. shots fired at chardon high school. 151 chardon avenue. the units on as well as myself and numerous other law enforcement agenciless responded to the scene. information received upon my arrival was that the shooter had left the building. at that point, our team went right in the door, 12 guys, got in and started assisting with the injured students. i want to assure the chardon community and the neighboring communities, we are safe. we've done diligent work up to this point and our work is not done, okay? i do want to give the news media here an update. currently we have one deceased student. his name is dan parmertor. the two other students life-flighted to cleveland-metro are in critical. the two students ground transported to hillcrest trauma center, cleveland clinic. one is stable and one is serious. no names. obviously, our subject that we've made an arrest on, he's a juvenile and until that's adjudicated in the proper court, no name release on that. but that's all i have to say at this time. i want -- my deep heart goes out to the families of the five victims, not only to them, but to our whole community. and, folks, bear with us. we have a lot of homework to do yet. this investigation is very -- going to be very long. and i thank you. >> there's been a lot of inquiries pertaining to the 911 tapes. it's been decided, no 911 tapes will be released today. there's a large volume of them that we need to go through. as soon as it's at all reasonably possible we'll make those available to the media. i want to thank the media for their help and their patience in helping us get through this tough day. and at this time i want to introduce a grief counselor from rabun wood mental health center. >> this is the mental health center here and i just wanted to provide a little bit of information about the response to this event for those who have been affected by it. first of all, i want to say to those who may be listening to me that there is no normal response to this kind of event. some will seem to handle it in stride. others will be very distraught. and it's all within normal limits. what we'd like to say to you is that it is our opinion that it's best for you to talk about and deal with these events as soon as you can after the event and thereby, reduce the long-term impact of this terrible tragedy. i wanted to point out that the response by the professional community has been enormous. in addition to people that we have here from my agency, the other county agencies are here. the recovery, family pride and as well as many agencies from around northeast ohio. recovery resources, beach brook and bellfair. i had a call this afternoon from university hospitals and they've offered to help with whatever is needed. so i want to say to all those that are affected. there are plenty of expert professionals to help you deal with this situation. please take advantage of it. the last thing, some will find that this sort of event is apparently, taken in stride at first and long after the uproar over the situation has died down, begin to suffer. we will be there next week, next month or next year. please call us and ask to speak to someone if you find emotions or depression or anxiety coming up in relation to this -- or any event -- but finally, two last things. i know the schedule is kind of being built as we go along. there is grief counseling here until 7:00 p.m., i believe, and as long as necessary, of course. we'll be back at schools tomorrow at 10:00 and at 4:00 p.m. and then in the schools later in the week. i would like to mention to the residents here, in the front of the phonebook is a number called "the cope line" 440-285-5665. we answer it 24 hours a day and have professional staff around the clock and are available to respond. thank you. >> again, i'd like to mention the phone number to get on the mailing list for our e-mails, for your updates and the press releases. 440-279-2009, extension 4. that will get you to our records department. we want a phone number. we want an e-mail address and a name. and then as press releases are provided by the chardon pd, we'll be more than happy to disseminate them out. again, we'll be here tomorrow, 11:00 a.m. in this parking lot. your vehicles, more than welcome. the school is opened this parking lot up here for your vehicles. i want to thank you. >> let's go to ted roland, he's on the scene in chardon, ohio, just outside of cleveland. ted, pick up the story. walk us through what what happened earlier this morning at the school? >> wolf, at 7:30 a.m. like the chief of police just articulated that's when the first 911 call came in and that's just after the shooting begrand. apparently, according to eyewitnesses, this individual, a student, apparently at the school, stood up from a cafeteria table and started shooting. at that point, as we know, five people were injured. a teacher, who was monitoring the study hall scenario in the cafeteria which apparently takes place before school each day, immediately reacted and chased the student out of the school. off of school grounds. at that point, they were able to deal with the injured. obviously, we know that there are four still injured and unfortunately, one individual has died, daniel par menner the. he was one of the students airlifted to cleveland. three of five went to cleveland and the other two are hospitalized here. that statement says in part -- we're shocked by this senseless tragedy. danny was a bright young boy who had a bright future ahead of him. the family is torn by this loss. we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time. another thing we can tell you right now, wolf, is that the atf and fbi are helping out with the local sheriff's department and local police with this investigation and we have some video that we just shot, just a few hours ago at the suspect's home. it is clear that they're going through that. clearly, they issued a search warrant and got a search warrant and they're going through the home there and this is still in the initial stages of the investigation. the chief of police just said that in his press conference. but they are confident at this point that the suspect did act alone. they did recover a handgun and it's been turned over to the atf to analyze but at this point, again, they believe that this is a lone gunman. one person did act alone. i also had the opportunity to talk to a family member of one of other injured people and he told me that his relative is out of surgery and they have been told that he's expected to survive. so, good news on that front. wolf? >> and as you know, the suspect being, himself, a student, do we know anything about this individual? >> only what -- students around here say that the one individual said that he used to be friends with him in elementary school. -- being a quiet individual. getting a lot of conflicting reports, too, about certain social networking communications that he may have had in the days and day prior to the shooting. we're still trying to organize that and iron out specifically, whether or not he did communicate over twitter and/or facebook. this individual is in custody and he, apparently, gave up without any problem to folks outside the school. he's being identified as t.j. lane. that's from a witness who talked to the cleveland oh of everyone we talked to outside the school seems to corroborate that that that's, indeed, the identity of the suspect. >> ted rowlands will stay on the story. what else are we picking up? >> wolf, we'll tell you moments after several parents dropped their children off at school they began to get frantic calls from several students in the building saying a gunman was on the loose and he was shooting at some of the teenagers. they're not releasing 911 calls. we have the dispatch calls that came in early. listen -- >> sir, we have three students down in the cafeteria at this time. we still don't know where the shooter is. >> 10-4. >> attention, chardon rescue, we have an active shooter at the high school. repeat, active gunshots at the high school. >> we're in route. >> and, wolf, police are investigating the possibility that, in fact, the gunman may have targeted a specific table inside the cafeteria. a group of teens, all sitting together, early in the morning. all of them about to head to vocational classes. one of them, nate muller was friends with the alleged gunman. he was grazed in the ear when he spoke to reporters he was clearly in shock. he was clearly processing the information. but, listen to these details. >> we were at the table right next to him. he was win three feet of us. and three of the victims were at my table as well. out of five people. nate muelle. >> has this sunk into you yet? >> no. it's pretty fake to me, still. it all feels like a movie. tomorrow, ask me. i'm sure tomorrow i'll be devastated. >> did you see the gun first or hear the shots? >> he took one shot. he didn't say anything the entire time. he took one shot and that's when we looked to see what was happening. it sounded like a firecracker, almost. and at that point, i looked back and i saw him shoot. which hit one of my other friends. i was sitting at the table with us and i was turning around, that's when he hit me. and i had -- >> so you're at the table. how many kids are at the table? >> five. four at the table including me. and then one standing next to the table. >> did the gunman just walk in or had he been -- >> he had been sitting at the table behind us after everybody left. i assume he was sitting with. and gone to class. and we were just talking like a normal day. and then we heard the first shot and that's when it all started. >> and this teenager, nick mueller, his ear was grazed miraculously escaping death. he says the group he was sitting with, one of the teens had apparently, started dating the ex-girlfriend of the alleged shooter. that's under the investigation as a possible motive. you heard ted rowlands talk about twitter and facebook. some students say they saw pictures posted by the alleged gunman. in one of the pictures he's holding two guns. in another picture he's apparently, holding up a warning sign, alerting the school massacre. all of that right now, under investigation. so fluid, as you know, wolf, that they are piecing together the details right now. everyone in shock. everyone devastated. especially, one of the five didn't survive. >> stay with me. we have one of the students at the school on the phone right now. neil thomas. neil, where were you when all of this was happening this morning? >> i was in the -- my spanish class down the hall. >> what did you hear? what did you see? >> well, you know, i was in my class. i didn't hear the gunshots. what i heard -- i heard and i saw the kids running down the hall screaming and shortly after the kids ran down the hall screaming i heard on the announcements, the principal say we're going into lockdown. >> and so what did that mean when he said you're going into lockdown? what did you do and the other students? >> well, you know, we rehearsed that, the drills. the drills -- the teacher goes over to lock the door. and, you know, we're supposed to be quiet and go over to a wall where they cannot see in through the door. so if you look into the door, you cannot see anyone in the class. >> did you think that this was for real? or just an exercise or a drill? >> well, at first, you know, i thought it was a drill, but you can tell by the intensity in the principal's voice it didn't seem right. it wasn't just a normal drill. >> do you -- let me just ask you if you knew the suspect, the individual who's now been picked up and is being questioned? >> caller: i don't -- i didn't personally know the suspect. from what i can tell, he seemed like the quieter kid. didn't really have a group, i guess, you could say. >> neil, deborah ferrick is with me. she wants to ask you a question as well. >> neil, there were reports that one of the teachers actually chased the gunman out of the school and in doing so, he may have saved multiple lives. what are you hearing about the teacher? >> caller: right. that teacher is also a football coach. a great guy. coach hall. what i've heard is that he chased out the gunman and from what i've heard from people that were there is that he may have been shot at. and, you know, not hit. but coach hall just like -- he always talks about how much he cares about us students and his team and you know, everyone. and i think today he really went out and he proved how much he cared about us. he would take a bullet for us. >> does, once the gunman was out of the school, did officials make it clear that, in fact, the coast was clear or were students still in lockdown waiting for police and sheriff's deputies, as well as the s.w.a.t. team to arrive and give an all-clear? >> i could say they wanted to take precautions, you know. >> caller: they wouldn't put us out there in harm's way. as far as i could tell, everything was controlled by the school and the authorities and that's all i know as far as i know. >> so right now, neal, what are the principals and the authorities told you, is school off tomorrow? what's going on? >> caller: from the reports and everything, they're saying, mr. bergant has said tomorrow's classes are over. we won't have classes tomorrow. >> at least, not tomorrow. neil, good luck to you and all the students in chardon, outside of cleveland. we appreciate you joining us very much. this teacher, football coach, clearly a hero. >> atf is doing an emergency trace on the gun, had he been given the chance to reload assuming he had extra bulletion, this massacre could have been even wurs, this shooting, i should say. but he was able to get the student off the premises and they set up a perimeter and then check the bags of each and every student to make sure that the gunman was, in fact, acting alone and didn't have an accomplice inside the building. small steps that resulted in very big end results. again, one student is dead. four others wounded. so it's the town's still in shock. >> we're getting a picture of the student. we're going to come back. we'll take a quick break and continue the breaking news. we're getting a statement from the secretary of education, arne duncan who has reacted to what happened in ohio on this day. that and all the day's other important news coming up. ♪ ♪ wow... ♪ [ female announcer ] sometimes, all you need is the smooth, creamy taste of werther's original caramel to remind you that you're someone very special. ♪ werther's original caramels. any way you want it. that's the way i need it. any way you want it. that's the way i need it. we just had ourselves a little "journey" moment there. yup. ♪ any way you want it ♪ that's the way you need it ♪ any way you want it i'm going to own my own restaurant. i want to be a volunteer firefighter. when i grow up, i want to write a novel. i want to go on a road trip. when i grow up, i'm going to go there. i want to fix up old houses. because it's such a random act, it's better to be prepared. >> and at the news conference which we saw live here in "the situation room" at the top of the hour they say they have all the 911 calls but for now the investigation is only beginning. they're not going to release any of that. >> no. they've also got surveillance tapes. apparently there's a lot of cameras inside the school. not clear if they were installed after the columbine shooting but there were surveillance cameras and that will give investigators a great deal of information as to the gunman's movements and motives. it's a crime scene and they want to piece it together and they've got to do it right. >> and these students, they're going to be going through some major shock right now. you heard the superintendent, the authorities at the news conference saying that grief counseling is under way already. >> yeah. absolutely. this young man, near-death experience. can you imagine, turning your head and in that split second, that turn saves your life? the bullet just grazed his ear and then he watched a friend of his be shot. so it's -- you can't even imagine and you saw just the pain and the fear on the students and the parents who raced to the school to get any kind of word. but interestingly, wolf, you mentioned, the social media and twitter, a lot of those kids were texting from inside the school. notifying their parents, so that the parents were able to track, at least, know that a certain number of students were okay. no one information is probably the thing that terrifies parents the most. not knowing where your child is. not knowing if your child is safe. not knowing what's going on so there was more information coming out. they did have to go through it to see which was legitimate and which was not legitimate but leaves the they had some sense of what was going on in the school. and so did authorities. >> what kind of community is this. a suburb of cleveland? >> 30 miles east of cleveland. about 5,000 people. interestingly, the school itself has about 1100 kids, not clear whether the kids are from other communities. >> i'm sure they are. >> chardon itself, just 5,000 people. so it's a small community. most people walk, one of the moms told us. everybody walks around. they know each other. so for this to happen is, for this to happen anywhere -- it doesn't matter. >> the question is the suspect. where did he get the guns? how did he have access? he shows up at school with reps and ammunition and all of the sudden he randomly, early in the morning, just opens fire? >> that's exactly right. one student said this morning, there was a rumor that somebody had brought a gun to school which is interesting. so at least there was a sense among the kids that there was someone in there that had guns and other kids had seen it. so, again, it was almost like dropping a pebble into a pond and it begins, slowly and then it gets bigger and bigger and bigger until you sort of know the outcome and that seems to be what happened in terms of the information filtering out. obviously, the gunshots and that clinched it. >> i want to play a clip of what chief mckenna said, shar to be police chief said. >> as a result of the training, that practice, if you would, law enforcement was completely placed inside the school upon arrival. and we believe that that helped to lessen the tragedy that occurred. unfortunately, much had occurred prior to law enforcement's arrival. >> there's the police chief in a small community, chardon, ohio, just outside of cleveland. deb, stand by. we'll continue the breaking news. we have other news we're watching as well. what's happening on the political front? >> that's right, wolf. the stakes of this race have not been much higher for mitt romney. he's in one of the biggest fights of his political career, all for the purpose of winning a state where he grew up. >> we started off about, what, 15 points down in the polls and now we're leading in the polls. thanks, you guys, appreciate the support. >> caught in a dog fight with rick santorum in the wol vereen state mitt romney is scrambling to claw his way out of michigan with a victory. >> senator santorum is a nice guy but he's never had a job in the private sector. >> reporter: desperate to avoid a trip to al gore country, losing his home state, romney is sharpening his lines of attack taking note of a santorum op-ed in the "wall street journal." >> i'm glaz he recognizes that this has to be a campaign about the economy. it's time for him to really focus on the economy. >> reporter: santorum's plarn called for improefal of the pipeline and big reductions in income and corporate tacks and $5 trillion in cuts in federal spending. but santorum has a time strayed from that message. >> the president of the united states said the other day that every child in america should go to school. what a snob. >> reporter: whether it's accusing the president of trying to send young people to college, to, in santorum's words, indoctrinate them in liberalism or criticizing john ken's four-decades-old call to have separate church and state. >> you bet that makes you throw up. >> reporter: but romney hit his own speed bumps. the romney campaign is downplaying a comment he made where he told a reporter he doesn't really follow nascar, can comment made to an associated press sports reporter was later picked up by the liberal-leaning website. >> i ask friends that are nascar team owners -- >> reporter: it sounded to some republicans like another cringe-inducing gap like his description of a romney car collection at a mostly empty ford field in detroit. >> i drive a mustang and a chevy pickup truck. anne drives a couple of cadillacs, actually. i used to have a dodge truck. i had all three covered. >> reporter: all of this may explain why newt gingrich is still smiling. taking a pass on this week's contest in arizona and michigan, gingrich is looking ahead to super tuesday and even to the republican convention in tampa. >> i think governor romney has to carry michigan. i think he has an enormous amount at stake. you can have all four of us or number five and six and somebody gets excited and jumps in. >> reporter: and team romney is pushing back on the notion that their candidate is out of touch with voters saying out on the campaign trail earlier today i was talking with a romney adviser and that romney adviser was saying, no. mitt romney connects with voters. he's been correcting with them across the country but get this. a top romney surrogate, in the state, a former republican party chairman here in michigan is floating out the possibility that mitt romney could lose the popular vote in this state, but actually win more delegates, so there are lots of different outcomes that could come out of this michigan primary. the most important outcome will be decided tomorrow night. wolf? >> let's see who wins tomorrow night. thanks very much, jim acosta. let's discuss this in our strategy session. our cnn political contributor, paul begala along with republican strategist, rich galen. rich, first to you. how much of a problem is this for mitt romney, more of these comments that seem to suggest these out of touch with average working-class folks? >> i'm not so sure you have to be a working-class person to win the presidency. that's something that we sort of all -- we've all sort of decided. that's the turning point. but let's go back to the business about nascar. his other choice would have been to and pander and say, i'm a great nascar fan and somebody said, who's the epoll sitter, who's 27? he wouldn't have a clue. better he say that way, unlike president obama, a couple years ago here in washington, who proclaimed himself to be a great white sox fan growing up and then when asked on tv who his favorite players were as a kid, he couldn't name one. so i think these things just pass along. if nobody is going to decide not to vote for him because he's not a nascar fan. >> as all of our mothers told us, honesty is the best policy in all these situations. listen to chris christie, he supports mitt romney, the governor of new jersey, defending his candidate. listen. >> the cat's out of the bag, bob, on the fact that governor romney's wealthy. so he has a number of cars. many people have made a lot of money over time, do. and so i think that this is just something where, to be candid, folks are looking for him to make trip-ups. governor romney has been successful. i think that's what want in a president of the united states. >> all right, paul, does he have a good point? >> no. not at all. let me be as blunt as governor christy. he's full of beans. it's not about if he's wealthy or from the middle class. rich galen made that point. certainly, kennedy and roosevelt were from the moneyed elite. it's whether you care about the poor and middle class and mitt romney doesn't. he's so out of touch, he said to soledad o'brien, i'm not very concerned about the very poor because they have a safety net. he tried to bet rick perry $10,000 on the stage a couple months ago. he said when he made $374,000 in speaking fees that wasn't very much money. he makes marie antoinette look like o'brien. he got rich in part by laying off middle-class people and by profiting from companies that he drove into bankruptcy. so when you're that kind of a wall street shark -- >> and the strategy here, paul, would be what? >> say it again? >> you just zipped into begala land again which we love. we love to see you there -- lovely place. join us. >> i sometimes wish i could. >> we were talking about the strategy of it. >> he's a terrible candidate. i did not anticipate this. he's frequently terrific in these debates but he's a terrible candidate. the staff, you've been a staff guy, i don't have much hair left. you tear your hair out when people like romney say things like that because it goes to his core weakness. the core concern voters have about him. >> another piece of it though, might be, paul, might be, that they've stopped backing away as they did when he started making these verbal ticks. and i think it may be because they feel now, that that's just the way he is. and you either accept him for that or you're not going to vote for him but trying to explain it and spend another day explaining these sorts of things is of no value so they just keep pushing on. >> but a win is a win tomorrow, paul. if romney wins decisively, even narrowly in michigan, if he wins in arizona, that gives him momentum a week from tomorrow at super tuesday. you understand the way this political momentum thing works? >> yes, but if mitt romney can't win against this field in this state of michigan, he's got to find another country to run in and another party to run in. with all due respect to speaker gingrich and santorum and ron paul, this is not -- and the head of one of the largest employers in the state and he grew up there. he may not win even there and that's pathetic. that's a really weak campaign. >> i think that's right. he does need to win tomorrow night and i think held. as we move to super tuesday, it's only ten states on super tuesday as opposed to 21 four years ago. four years ago, i looked this up, john mccain only won nine of the 21 super tuesday states. so as we get past tomorrow into wednesday, we'll have this conversation and if he doesn't win, if romney doesn't win 9 out of 10, he's in big trouble and we'll see. >> no doubt that tomorrow and tuesday, a week from tomorrow, will be critical days in this republican contest. guys, thank you very much. >> you bet. we're continuing to follow the breaking news out of ohio. the school shooting outside of cleveland. hitting home to a lot of folks, especially to our cnn correspondent, martin savidge. he's from that area. we'll hear directly from him and that's coming up. a bloody suicide bombing and the poisoning of food at an ally base. now new taliban claims of revenge in afghanistan for the burning of the muslim holy books. an explosion of rage over the burning of holy books in afghanistan. at least nine people died in the suicide bombing outside an air base in jalalabad. there are no nato casualties. the taliban called the attack a retaliation for last week's koran burning by nato type troops and militants claim to have poisoned food at a base near the pakistani border. we're joined from kabul. it seems like the reaction is getting worse by the day, nick? >> reporter: it's changing in character, too, wolf. interesting about this suicide attack today, the taliban claim they were avenging the koran burning. this is basically a conventional taliban, suicide bombing on a nato base. they may try to claim the violence and the forthcoming insurgency campaign of the warmer summer months, is perhaps, all tied into avenging the koran and that could appeal to other afghans, also furious at this nato blunder. we also heard today, as you said, about this possible poisoning attempt. the taliban claim they may have killed five americans by poisoning food on the base near the pakistani border and nato denied anybody was hurt but did admit that coffee and fruit had had chlorine bleach somehow contaminated on it. they don't know how. but these sorts of things including the death of four americans and the violence at the hands of afghans in army uniform play into the distrust now formulating between the afghan soldiers and nato troops training them to take over security responsibilities in the country. so they can leave, wolf. >> you know, this is a bigger question. i write about it on my blog in "the situation room" blog post. the u.s. is still spending $2 billion a week in u.s. taxpayer money, $2 billion a week in afghanistan, to maintain the military presence there. providing economic assistance, infrastructure development, if you will, training afghanistan police and security forces. i'm getting a expense based on what experts are telling me, nick, and you're there on the scene -- that so many afghan nean neans want the troops to honor their country. give us an update on whether this stands. >> reporter: i think many afghans want a better life and i think after ten years, perhaps, they're not sure if what nato has been trying again and again, often repeating the same tactics, will necessarily bring that for them. the major point of last seven days may have seen a change. this broad, not universal but this very intense, felt by many afghans, fury about the koran burning, this has damaged the trust relationship between the afghans and americans. the incidents where afghans have shot u.s. soldiers and i think there's a reassessment is fair to say, in the hearts of some nato soldiers here, really wondering how they can trust the afghans they're working alongside. when that begins to break down with the transition is in jeopardy and that's the key plague of the exit strategy. so a lot really, potentially, has changed in this last week, wolf. >> no doubt about that. enormous political pressure here in the u.s. to stop spending $100 billion a year for the afghanistan initiative ten years after 9/11. nick, thank you so much. meanwhile, a new crisis at sea. a costa cruise lines, a fire on board the sister ship of the line they are wrecked off the coast of italy. plus a gas tanker in a fiery and deadly crash. the dramatic video only tells part of the story. specialists, lots of doctors, lots of advice... and my hands were full. i couldn't sort through it all. with unitedhealthcare, it's different. we have access to great specialists, and our pediatrician gets all the information. everyone works as a team. and i only need to talk to one person about her care. we're more than 78,000 people looking out for 70 million americans. that's health in numbers. unitedhealthcare. in what passes for common sense. used to be we socked money away and expected it to grow. then the world changed... and the common sense of retirement planning became anything but common. fortunately, td ameritrade's investment consultants can help you build a plan that fits your life. take control by opening a new account or rolling over an old 401(k) today, and we'll throw in up to $600. how's that for common sense? what's going on? let's discuss with cnn erin burnett, the host of "erin burnett out front." i can't tell you, erin, how many people say to me, instead of spending all the money in afghanistan, until the end of 2014, build housing and bridges and infrastructure. power plants, here in the united states, instead of afghanistan. >> it's something we're hearing more and more, wolf. it's the longest war in american history and i know you were going through the overall numbers with nick. but something that stood out to me, we've spent $86 billion on quote/unquote reconstruction in afghanistan. and $51 billion on training afghan security forces and a lot of people, in light after what happened this past week, might say, what did that all that money go for? some afghanistan troops who will be very frustrated with the afghan troops they're working with and call the standards those troops have as quote/unquote, is afghan good enough? so there's a lot of frustration. when we look at the troop pullout plan, at one point there were 100,000 troops in afghanistan and after this summer we're down to 68,000. even if as planned, all that's to troops are out by the end of 2014, experts say in order to have any semblance of stability and any success at some of these investments the united states has put in, we need to have 25,000 american, quote, advisory troops left in afghanistan. now, of course, advisory troops are among those who were killed this weekend. these are people who don't have a lot of security. work one-on-one in the afghanistan ministries as an example, they take on an incredible amount of risk and it's those troops that we might have seen a change as to what kind of commitment the u.s. continues with and what kind of stability remains in afghanistan. my math, when you look at keeping 25,000 troops in perpetuity in afghanistan, even in an advisory role, we're spending about $1.2 million per trooper year in afghanistan, even the noncombat troops which would cost less this is between $20 and $30 billion a year in ongoing commitments of u.s. taxpayers. >> a huge amount of money. erin will have more at 7:00 p.m. eastern on "out front." thanks very much, erin, for that. we'll get back to the breaking news. the mass shooting at an ohio high school. at the top of the hour we'll have the latest on the victims and the alleged shooter and the investigation. standby. and hillary clinton is now speaking to cnn about syria, afghanistan and the president's own chances of getting re-elected. lisa sylvester is monitoring other top stories in the situation room including north korea threatening war with the united states. what's going on? >> north korea state-one news agency has this ominous message saying, quote, troops are poised for a war carrying nuclear war equipment. the warning comes as the u.s. and south korea begin their annual joint military drills which the u.s. insists are only defensive. north korean leader kim jong un says he will retaliate if they get into his territory. and drivers at daytona are still waiting to start sunday's race. rain delayed the event by one day for the first time in 50 years. more rain postponed today's noon start. nascar's most prestigious race is scheduled to start later tonight. and check out this scary crash caught on camera in wisconsin. a tanker truck carrying gasoline crosses over the median and narrowly misses two cars and then crashes into a bridge and bursts into flames. the camera misses the impact. but it shows the flash of the explosion. the highway is immediately engulfed in fire and the truck driver was killed in the crash. but fortunately, no one else. and it's a rough day for cruise liners. the ship allegra, sister ship of the costa concordia, suffered a fire in its engine room and it was then stuck near the island country of seychelle. last we heard a tugboat is in route and the passengers are fine, wolf. >> lisa, thank you. and you're in "the situation room." happening now, breaking news. a deadly high school shooting hits close to home for one cnn reporter. just ahead we're going live to our own martin savidge. a member of his family was inside when it all happened. standby. and hillary clinton taking a rare step back into presidential politics during a rather candid interview with cnn. you'll find out what she said got her political juices flowing again. and a self-proclaimed atheist allegedly attacked by a muslim for dressing at a zombie version of the prophet mohammed for halloween. now a judge is dismissing the case. we'll share with you what we know. we'll welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. breaking news, political headlines and jean moos all straight ahead and i'm wolf blitzer and you're in "the situation room." first, let's go to the shocking scene eerily reminiscent of the 1999 massacre at columbine high school. the education secretary, arne duncan, calls the shooting at chardon high school in ohio, outside of cleveland, "an unspeakable tragedy." moments ago there was a news conference to update all of us on the latest. >> as a result of the training, that practice, if you would, law enforcement was quickly placed inside the school upon arrival. and we believe that that helped to lessen the tragedy that occurred. unfortunately, much had occurred prior to law enforcement's arrival. >> the cleveland identifying the suspect at t. j. lane. you see the picture. he's here in the picture that we just obtained from his facebook page. police say a teacher apparently chased him out of the school before he finally surrendered. let's go straight to our own martin savidge. martin, you have a rather important, personal connection to this story. tell us all about it. >> reporter: that's right, wolf. i grew up in northeast ohio. and my brother-in-law and his family still live here in chardon. and this morning, when i went to the cnn website and saw the breaking news headline i just couldn't believe it. i knew that he has an 18-year-old son who goes to chardon high school. and immediately, i reached out to the family to make sure that everyone was okay. and thank goodness, he was. he was in an area far away from where the shooting took place. but everybody in this community and certainly, in that high school has just been shocked and horrified by the day's events and talking with students here, you can see how deeply shaken. it began, of course, early this morning during the morning announcements or shortly thereafter. about 7:30, when the principal gets on the loud speaker system in the school and announced that they were in lockdown. now, the students initially said, look, we've had these drills all the time. they could tell by the emotion in his voice that this was not a drill. they knew it was real. and it became all too real as the day wore on, wolf. >> and i know you've been speaking with students ever since you got back there, outside of cleveland. student who is knew or at least, know the shooter, the suspect in this case. what are they telling you about this individual? >> reporter: well, you know, it's a very mixed message that you get. t. j. lane is a young man who, as cliche' as this sounds, was very much a person who kept to himself. he had a troubled home life. we're still delving into the details, but he lived with his grandmother. he was not living with both parents. he had an older brother who is in jail serving a probation violation for drugs. so you can tell this is a young man with a troubled past. students that knew him said he put up walls and he kept himself isolated. it was difficult to try to communicate with him. they also say because of that isolation, because of the way he dressed and because of the way he acted, he would be picked upon by students and this was a problem that goes all the way back to middle school. and some are suggesting, not in any way condoning but suggesting, that that kind of past caught up with him today and that somehow with he snapped inside of that high school. wolf? >> tell us about chardon, this community about 30 miles outside of cleveland, more specifically, about this high school. >> reporter: well, you know, it's a pretty well-to-do. a semirural area. a lot of people come here because it's part city and part country. it's known as the snow capital. they get a ton of lake effect snow out here. and, of course, when you talk to people they'll tell you they never expected anything like this to happen in chardon. but i got to be honest with you. i've covered, unfortunately, many of these school shootings including columbine and that's the first words you get out of anybody's mouth. i never thought it would happen here. this is one of those areas. this is where people come to raise their kids because they think it's safe and because they think the school system is great. and all of that is true, except that there are always excepti exceptionleexceptions sometimes. and today was a very violent exception in the high school. we should also point out that t. j. lane was not a student. he went to another school. the way it works the students show up at chardon and then catch a bus to the other schools. these other schools were mainly schools that teach you, say, professional trades or prepare you to go into some sort of job, wolf? >> let's get back to your own family that lives there. you have relatives as you pointed out that live there, including an 18-year-old student at chardon high school. give us a little bit more, martin. tell us how they're holding up. how they're reacting to all this. >> reporter: a lot of the kids can't even bring themselves to talk about it. we've reached out to a number of families, especially families whose children were either in the cafeteria where the shooting took place, or who were in the hallways and they just are so emotionally distraught. initially when they got out of the classroom and got out of school, they felt fine. but now, the news has begun to sink in about how horrible -- and, of course, they knew everybody. they know everybody from t. j. lane to the victims here and the one student who died. so it's not a big school. it's not like one place where you're just a number. a lot of them know one another. they're all connected. and they're deeply shaken tonight. you can see that normally, young people who are caught up with the day's events are getting on facebook and being online, they are extremely serious right now. and when you talk to them, conversations you have are far beyond their years. >> the education secretary, martin, as you know, arne duncan, issued a statement and among other things, he pointed to what he called the extraordinary courage of a teacher who chased the shooter out of the school and if not for the speedy reaction of the school leaders the toll of these shootings could have been even worse. are you picking up more information on how the end of this shooting incident went down? >> reporter: we are hearing a number of stories. some of them are still trying to verify the facts so i can't tell you everything until we do. but that particular teacher, which is so often cited, mr. hall, actually, frank hall, a football coach. and big guy. and the kids say they are not surprised in any way, shape or form, that mr. hall would have been the one that chased the gunman out of the school and, probably, prevented any further disaster from happening here. i'm also hearing, there are other teachers who did other heroic things. some of them quite remarkable. outside the line of the classroom, going to rescue wounded children, bring them to their classroom and to care for them and protect them. it's really quite remarkable and as soon as we can verify the names and give the appropriate credit to the heroes, we'll do so, wolf? >> martin savage on the scene, martin, thanks very much. ted rowlands is standing by. what else is going on right now, ted? you've been there since this incident went down. >> reporter: well, wolf, we have an update on one of the other victims that was airlifted to cleveland. we talked to a relative of one of those victims. and they do not want the name released but we can tell you that that young person has been taken out of surgery. a few hours ago and recovering and the family has been told that this young student, high school student, is expected to recover. so that is good news. there are a total of four victims still hospitalized. at the press conference at the top of the last hour we learned one is in stable condition and the other three are in critical condition. so as you can imagine, as martin talked about this community, they are just absolutely in shock. and they're dealing with the healing process of -- for the victims. and also, dealing with the question of -- what happened to this young man? why did he -- what compelled him to do this? t. j. lane who has been identified by witnesses who talked to the cleveland police, a lot of people, very frustrated and just literally, in shock. outside of the school, you can see they're still processing the scene and they say that will take more time. they're getting some help from the fbi and the atf. the weapon recovered has been handed over to the atf to do ballistics a ballistics analyzing it but they say they are confident he was a lone shooter and acted completely alone. >> do we know details about the weapon? the ammunition and what was involved? >> reporter: wolf, what we know that it was a handgun, apparently. one handgun and it was retrieved almost immediately. whether or not the suspect had it on him when he was taken into custody or discarded it after being chased away from the school by this teacher that martin was talking about, frank hall, we don't know that. we know that they've recovered a weapon and one witness said it was a silver handgun they saw and that's been given to the atf, where they will, obviously, match it to the bullet casings they find inside the school to make sure, indeed, it was just one weapon. >> and specifically about this individual, the suspect t. j. lane, you're getting a little preliminary information about a student that had problems. he was being teased, if you will, by other students. what do we know about this? >> reporter: well, apparently, we've heard from a witness that knew him and actually had grown up with him. he said that he had been friends with him for a long period of time in elementary school and younger but in recent years, this young man became a bit of a recluse and kept to himself and dressed goth type of clothing and was going to a school for kids at risk. he met here every day, along with the other students, not only this school but another trade school. they all come to this one location and then the students that didn't actually attend this school would be bussed to the other locations and apparently he was a student at another location for kids at risk. that's all we know for sure at this point about this young man. but the preliminary information from students here is that he was one of these people that in recent years, changed his behavior in terms of how outgoing he was with other people, et cetera. >> reminds me a little bit of the shooters at columbine in colorado, more than a decade ago. we'll stay in close touch, ted roland rowlands with you. and rick santorum calls the president of the united states, a, quote, snob. it will help or hurt him in tomorrow's very important primaries? we're learning more about the suspect, as i said, the ohio school shooting. his apparent relationship with some of the victims. we're staying on top of the story. also this hour, a cnn interview with the secretary of state, hillary clinton. she responds to critics who say she shouldn't be talking about presidential politics in her role as the secretary of state. . outdoors, or in. transitions® lenses automatically filter just the right amount of light. so you see everything the way it is meant to be seen. maybe even a little better. experience life well lit, ask for transitions adaptive lenses. ask for transitions adaptive lenses. in the works package, we change the oil we change the filter... tire rotation, suspension, we make suspension checks... what we have here is the multi-point inspection. every time a vehicle comes into a ford dealership you'll be presented with one of these. we check the belts, hoses... brakes. tires and the pressures... battery, all your fluids... exhaust system, transmission... we inspect your air filter... it gets done,it gets done quickly and it gets done correctly. the works. oil change, tire rotation and more: $29.95 or less after rebate - at your ford dealer. you're a doctor... you're a car doctor. maybe a car doctor... you know what's exciting, graduation. when i look up into my student's faces, i see pride. you know, i have done something worthwhile. when i earned my doctorate through university of phoenix, that pride, that was on my face. i am jocelyn taylor, i am committed to making a difference in peoples lives and i am a phoenix. jack cafferty is here with the cafferty file. when mitt romney goes off the teleprompter and speaks offer the cuff, he has a record of promptly stepping in it. yesterday he was asked many if he follows nascar and he told the associated press, quote, not as closely as some ardent fans but i have friends that are nascar team owners. and then there was a botched campaign event in his home state of michigan on friday. 1200 people showed up at a football stadium that seats 65,000. romney told the handful of supporters he drives cars made in michigan. >> i like the fact that most of the cars i see are detroit-made automobiles. i drive a mustang and a chevy pickup truck. anne drives a couple of cadillacs, actually. and i used to have a dodge truck so i had all three covered. >> this is not how you connect with blue collar workers in detroit. no wonder he's in a dead heat with rick santorum in the primary in his home state. in the same speech, romney made a repeated and bizarre comment about why he loves michigan saying it feels to be good to be back home in michigan, quote, where the trees are the right height, whatever the hell that means. it appears romney has a serious problem when he goes off script. he sounds out of touch, or elite or -- in place for them. romney said he likes, quote, being able to fire people who provide services to me, in reference to choosing between different health insuranshurnin companies. he made that infamous bet with former candidate rick apparently during a earlier debate and it's estimated that romney is worth about $200 million. in response to his gaffe about the cars, he says, i can't be perfect quote. i am who i am. he adds that there's nothing wrong to be successful in america. here's the question -- should mitt romney be allowed to go off teleprompter? go to cnn.com slash cafferty file. go to our post on "the situation room"'s facebook page. wolf? >> jack thanks very much. let's dig deeper with gloria borger, our chief political correspondent. rick santorum has a problem right now. at least among some. he says the president of the united states is a snob, if you will, because he wants kids to go to college and talking about separation of church and state. what's going on here? >> it's not an accident, wolf. this is contrived. it's on purpose and there are a couple of reasons that rick santorum is doing this in the short term he believes it could help him. first of all, in talking about the president as a snob, he's trying to relate to the blue-collar voters in michigan. rick santorum has portrayed himself as the populist. his grandfather was a coal miner. he thinks that will help him. in talking about jfk and the separation of church and state, he's making a clear play for evangelical voters who are very important in this republican primary in michigan. there are some estimates, wolf, which say that there are about half of the republican primarigoers in this state of michigan so he wants to capture the evangelicals because he believes that he can get them and then balance out mitt romney's popularity in the detroit area. so the danger, though, for him is that if he goes too far with this, he could turn off the fiscal conservatives in the state, and that could be a problem for him as well, not to mention a general election, should he win the primary. >> so santorum has problems and romney, as jack pointed out, he has some potential problems as well. >> right. >> as jack points out, look, mitt romney has been dogged this entire primary season with the problem that they can't seem to talk about himself and his own wealth. i saw, though, on fox news on sunday, a way in which he seemed to be coming around to talking about his wealth with a very good message. but let's take a listen to what he said. >> if people think that there's something wrong with being successful in america, they better vote for the other guy because i've been extraordinarily successful and i want to use that success and know-how to help the american people. and by the way, in terms of connecting with the american people, when i got into the race, a lot of the guys in the race and other people have come and gone and i've gotten more votes than anybody else in the race so far. i've been the guy that's been able to connect in new hampshire and in florida and in nevada. >> so, that's pretty good. those are pretty good lines for him. clearly, written by his consultants. but his problem is that he makes these unforced errors that jack was talking about. his wife driving a couple of cadillacs. knowing the owners of nascar teams. he's got to be able to figure out a way, when he's trying to ingratiate himself to the average joe and relate to the average joe, to do it, in a real way. i was talking with a santorum advisers this morning who said to me, it's not just important for a voter to be able to relate to a candidate. it's more important for a president to be able to relate to a voter. his point was, of course, mitt romney hadn't figured out a way to do it. >> look at this poll from an american research group and the poll right now, michigan, it wasn't supposed to be like this. santorum, 36. romney, 35. ron paul, 15. newt gingrich, 8%. this could be a huge night tomorrow night, one way or another. >> and they're already trying to prespin the results. the romney people have saying they came back from a very large deficit. santorum people saying this is romney's home state. we were not expected to win anyway. if it's close we won. >> santorum think they've won no matter what because it's close. >> of course. >> we'll see what happens. gloria, thank you. a massacre in syria today. hard to believe things are getting worse. we're going to nick robertson who is monitoring the horrifying situation for us. sta standby. and cloif opens up about the lure of presidential politics and whether that's appropriate for the secretary of state to be commenting about it. and a judge dismisses a case involving a muslim accused of harassing a atheist. did he follow u.s. law or muslim law? or is it so many u.s. and european officials, many in the arab world are saying simply, a joke? >> reporter: it's not going to bring peace. the country is on the edge of civil war. it's not going to change that one a iota. it will give russia and china, syria's backers, something to point to and say -- look, this is a syrian government that's supported by its people. the government says that 57.4% of the population turned out just over 8 million people turned out. of them, they say that 89% -- 89.4% voted, yes. 1 in 10 voted yes. the 9 out of 10, rather we are voted yes. 1 in 10 voted no. the government will use this to say they represent the majority of people. and, therefore, the constitutional changes they're offering should be accepted by the opposition. the reality is that changes they're offering are not substantial. they're not meaningful to the opposition. so really, it's a lot of window dressing, wolf. >> that's what most of the officials i've spoken to, in washington, at least, are suggesting. thank you very much, nick robertson on the scene for us in beirut. secretary of state hillary clinton is getting heat for very briefly stepping out of the world of diplomacy and making a prediction about u.s. presidential politics. the secretary spoke with our foreign affairs reporter as she wrapped up a tour of north africa. they spoke about several controversial topics including the u.s. earths to isolate the syrian president, bashar al assad. >> we have a lot of contacts as do other countries. a lot of sources within the syrian government and the business community and the minority communities. and our very clear message is the same to all of them. you cannot continue to support this illegitimate regime because it's going to fall. so be part of an oppositioning that try to have a path forward that will, you know, protect the rights of all syrians. >> what about the message that the syrian national council is sending to those inside syria? do you think they're sending the right message? >> well, i think it's very difficult to form an opposition when you have no place to operate out of inside the country you're trying to change. in libya, we had a very effective operation in benghazi that gave us an address. we could deal with people. it represented libyans across the country. we don't have that in syria and the syrian national council is doing the best it can but obviously, it's not yet a united opposition. >> let's talk about afghanistan. the embassy is in lockdown right now? >> yes. >> employees not allowed to go anywhere? >> no. >> okay. listen, president obama apology has become very controversial. obviously, newt gingrich and others have made this apology part of the campaign. but other experts in afghanistan are saying that this apology sends the wrong message. it gives the taliban the excuse to go against us. to help use our enemies against us and, also, a lot of the attacks that are happening against the americans, these horrible attacks seem to be in retaliation for something the u.s. is taking responsibility for. >> well, i find it, you know, somewhat troubling that our politics would inflame such a dangerous situation in afghanistan. i well remember during the eight years of president bush's administration, when something happened that was regrettable, unintentional, as this incident was -- president bush was quick to say -- look, we're sorry about this. this is something that we obviously did not mean to do. that's all that president obama was doing. and it was the right thing to do. to have our president, on record, saying this was not intentional. we deeply regret it. and, now, we're hoping that, you know, voices inside afghanistan will join that of president karzai and others in speaking out to try to calm the situation. it's a deeply regrettable but now it is out of hand and it needs to stop. >> you said yesterday that president obama will be re-elected. it's not -- it raised a lot of eyebrows. it's not really the secretary of state to say anything about an election. it seemed to be kind of a campaign statement. >> well, remember the context of it, you know?
