Pilot Ben Watsky got the idea for sturdy, critter-proof free food pantries as a disaster response when he was volunteering in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. He founded Open World Relief, a charity that installed 8 of these pantries in Capital Region neighborhoods. Northeastern Woodworkers volunteers built them. Open World Relief volunteer Jackie Watsky (Ben's mom) stocks a free pantry near the Shrine Church of Our Lady of the Americas. Northeast Woodworkers built the free pantries on legs above the sidewalk to protect the nonperishables inside such as canned soup and veggies, boxed oatmeal, jars of baby food and boxes of mac and cheese and more.
