TRENTON, NJ — Struggling under coronavirus restrictions and travel limitations, New Jersey’s tourism industry took a major hit last year, with the number of people visiting the state — and the amount of money they spent — registering dramatic declines, according to the state’s 2020 tourism report.
While the number of visitors declined to 84.6 million — a 27% drop from 2019 — visitor spending fell nearly 37% to a level last seen during the 2009 recession, as pandemic closures and capacity limitation weighed heavily on spending, it was reported during the New Jersey Tourism Industry Association’s annual Advocacy Day event, held online on May 6.
